Women in Balbriggan invited to get free support to quit smoking

The Irish Cancer Society has launched the latest round of We Can Quit, its free smoking cessation course. It will begin on Tuesday, 28 February at 7pm in the Castleland Community Centre, Castleland, Balbriggan.

Women from the Balbriggan area are invited to sign up for the programme, a free 12 week course which supports women in joining forces to quit smoking together.

This is the first time that We Can Quit will run in Balbriggan but others courses have been successfully run in other areas in north county Dublin.

Rachel Burke, Community Cancer Prevention Officer at the Irish Cancer Society said, “Giving up smoking is hard, but We Can Quit offers women support and encouragement to get through it. Through t

he programme, women can access a friendly and supportive network of like-minded women who really understand what they are going through, and they often continue meeting up with their groups long after the course has finished.

“Here at the Irish Cancer Society, we know that quitting smoking is a challenge and that women today often lead very busy lives with many commitments and responsibilities. We Can Quit offers women support to take on and succeed on their quitting journey. Together, the women in We Can Quit help each other to quit smoking for good.”

We Can Quit is open to all female smokers living in the Balbriggan area, who are over the age of 18 years and are interested in quitting smoking. The programme commences in the Castleland Community Centre and runs from 7pm to 9pm each Tuesday.

Participants in the We Can Quit programme attend weekly group sessions and will receive one-to-one support. They will also be offered 12 weeks of free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). Research has shown that smokers who use a combination of group support and two NRT products for a 12 week period are four times more likely to quit and stay smoke-free for good.

We Can Quit is run in conjunction with the HSE and Blanchardstown Area Partnership
