Unveiling of the Thomas Ashe statue by sculpture Paul Darcy of Skerries this weekend.



On Saturday next the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society 1916-1921 will attend at 1.30pm at the graveside of Thomas Ashe and lay a wreath on the grave to mark the 100th anniversary of his burial following his death on the 25th September 1917. All are welcome to attend to mark this iconic moment of Irish history. More details of Weekend Events Here

The Society, held their annual commemoration at Rath Cross, Ashbourne on Sunday the 24th September. The Commemoration marked the 100th anniversary of the death of the Fingal Volunteer Leader Thomas Ashe who died on the 25th September 1917 while on hunger strike.

The Rath cross Monument which was inspired by Thomas Ashe’s Poem “Let me carry Your Cross for Ireland, Lord. The poem was read by Rolestown woman Una O’Brien.

This was followed by an address by Minister Regina Doherty T.D. Whose granduncles served under Thomas Ashe during the Battle of Ashbourne.

A pipers lament will be played in memory of Thomas Ashe. This will be followed by the sounding of the Last Post followed by the raising of the Tricolour and the playing of the Reveille.

A wreath was laid in memory of Thomas Ashe and his volunteers by his grandnephew Padraic Ashe on the Monument. A large number of the relatives attended having travelled from Ashe’s home place in Kinnard, Dingle. A party of Fingal Volunteers accompanied the Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor to Kinnard on Saturday to attend an unveiling of a Bust of Thomas Ashe. The bust was executed by Skerries artist Paul Darcy.

The Black Raven Pipe Band which was founded by Thomas Ashe in 1910, will played the National Anthem to conclude proceedings.
