There’s never been more urgent need for essential St Molaga’s new school build – Clifford-Lee

Press Release  21st September 2018 - Prefab units no longer fit for purpose heading into winter without action on new school build - Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Children and Youth Affairs, Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee has said it’s yet another new school year and still no tangible action on delivering on the long-committed development of St Molaga’s Senior National School, Balbriggan. Senator Clifford-Lee said, “The number of pupils in St Molaga’s is steadily rising as even more young families move to the Balbriggan area and the much welcomed drop in the pupil teacher ratio means more accommodation is needed. We’ve known this for quite some time and have repeatedly brought it to the Minister’s attention.

Local Fianna Fáil senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee brings Fianna Fáil front bench Spokesperson on Education Thomas Byrne TD to meet St. Molaga's Principal Pauline Costello, teaching staff and parents to see the condition of the building and prefabs

"That said however, the current situation is not just a capacity issue. It’s less than a month into the new school year and already the existing prefab accommodation is leaving both teachers and pupils in a cold and damp environment. This is deeply concerning considering autumn let alone winter is not even in full swing just yet. “Staff and pupils are in desperate conditions which are likely going to leave dealing with colds and flu’s in the winter months especially. In order for staff, school pupils and their families be able to cope with the potential consequences of this, urgent progress must be made on upgrading and extending the school building. "The staff and management in St Molaga's have been providing excellent quality education in Balbriggan for over thirty years and should be supported to continue with that tradition. Ultimately a new school build is whats required. She concluded, “The Minister for Education, Richard Bruton needs to urgently provide a definitive timeline for building works to be carried out at St Molaga's.”
