The Atrium County Hall Swords came alive to the sound of traditional music and singing on Tuesday last as Fingal County Council celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge. The evening featuring music and singing from Antaine Ó Faracháin and Nollaig MacCárthaigh was one highlight of a varied programme of events in the Council for Seachtain na Gaeilge.
Among the attendance were Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler,
Chief Executive Paul Reid and Cllr Daire Ní Laoi, Cllr David O'Connor , Cllr Paul Mullville as well as Fingal staff and the Irish language community. Antaine ÓFaracháin played fiddle and entertained with songs and long entertaining introductory stories as Gaeilge while Nollaig MacCárthaigh played beautifully on the Uilleann Pipes featuring among others tunes from Seamus Ennis. Seamus Ennis of course is beloved in Fingal and the Cultural Centre named in his honour in Naul is a venue for a host of cultural events.
The evening was an opportunity for Fingal Staff to enjoy an evening using the Irish language and many former colleagues joined them on the night. There are many Irish language groups active on a weekly basis in the Fingal community and their members were well represented on the occasion also. People got up to sing and dance and everyone really enjoyed the night.
Speaking on the night Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler welcomed everyone to the event and continued “I am aware that Irish is very strong in the Fingal area with many Gaelscoileanna and Irish language groups and it is great to see the culture so alive on an occasion like this great music agus craic“
Chief Executive, Paul Reid encouraged every to enjoy the evening ”Bain sult as an oíche” and continued “Tonight’s event is one of many that we have held in this venue and it is part of our aim to welcome the people of Fingal into our County Hall. We are having a large number of events particularly in our Libraries, for Seachtain na Gaeilge. Events like this are a great opportunity to use the language in a fun social setting.“
Seachtain na Gaeilge continues until 17th March. The Seachtain na Gaeilge programme can be downloaded from www.Fingal.ie Click Here .
