Over 60 music groups including choirs, barbershop quartets and folk groups have applied to participate in the first annual Fingal International Festival of Voices which will take place in Balbriggan, Co Dublin on March 12-15th. These will include groups involved in competition and those who are visiting the town just to participate, something like 1,700 musicians over the course of the festival.
International participants include choirs from the United Kingdom, Belarus, United States and Canada. Two choirs from Derry and Armagh will participate from Northern Ireland and the remainder come from counties like Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Sligo, Meath and Louth.
Reacting to the substantial response from the attending choirs and music groups, the Artistic Director of the Festival, Michael T. Dawson, said, “It is extremely encouraging to see the wonderful response we have had and reinforces our pledge that the Festival will become an annualised event. The festival is focused on celebrating diversity and will provide a platform for individuals and communities from home and abroad to showcase their culture. It will also be very entertaining with a wide range of music and entertainment for all tastes including school choirs, workplace choirs, folk music, sacred music, small ensembles, barbershop chorus and open categories.”
