- Clarification required on costs of disposal of waste -
Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien says the Government must urgently clarify the costs of the new pay by weight system for disposal of waste. Deputy O’Brien said, “Former Minister for Environment Alan Kelly announced last January that he was introducing a new pay-by-weight system for bin charges. At the time he was insistent that the new regime would result in a reduced waste disposal bill for 87% of all households.
“There is a growing sense of fear and frustration among families in relation to these grossly unfair charges. In the past number of days I have heard many examples from constituents in Dublin-Fingal, who are experiencing significant increases of between 30-50% for no change in service. “It is my view, and that of my party that it is most appropriate to suspend the new charges regime until we receive clarification as to why families are experiencing a massive increase in their bills when it was previously stated that the opposite would occur. “Strong consideration should be given to the viability of a transition period to the new regime to ensure that households are fully informed and can financially plan around their expected bin charges. “The waste disposal companies have not effectively outlined their justification behind the significant increase in charges. We need full transparency from these companies, they must clearly outline where their customers money is going. I will fight these new proposals tooth and nail.” concluded Deputy O’Brien.
