Consultation regarding Fingal Commemorations Programme 2018-2023
Fingal County Council is developing a Commemorations Programme for the period 2018-2023, when there will be many aspects of our past which need to be remembered and commemorated. These may form part of the Decade of Centenaries in which we will remember significant historical events that took place between 1918 and 1923, or may relate to other aspects of Fingal’s history and heritage.
The Council is now embarking on a consultation process so that the people of Fingal can have their say on what we should remember and commemorate. This process will also encourage a discussion on how such commemorations can develop a deeper and more lasting engagement with our past. We are looking for your input in suggesting events, persons and themes we should remember between 2018 and 2023. This public consultation process will run until Wednesday 24th January 2018.
The Fingal Commemoration Programme 2018-2023 aims to:
Reflect the results of the public consultation process now being undertaken by the Council.
Set out the events, persons and themes which Fingal County Council will prioritise for commemoration during the period 2018-2023
Outline ideas for, and methods of, remembering and commemoration which groups across Fingal may wish to apply to their own commemorative aims during this period.
Detail the supports the Council aims to provide to local groups and organisations wishing to develop a commemorative event or endeavour during the period 2018-2023.
Changing the focus
Commemoration has, in the past, often meant holding a series of stand-alone events to commemorate and remember significant historical happenings and people. While this activity is important and will continue, the Fingal Commemoration Programme 2018-2013 will also encourage commemorative activity which results in a more enduring exploration of Fingal’s history and heritage. The Fingal Commemoration Programme aims to move the focus from stand-alone commemoration to remembering. This will ensure that by 2023 there is a deeper and more lasting appreciation and awareness of history and heritage across Fingal.
While many events and/or persons related to the struggle for independence in the period 1918-1923 will be commemorated during the period 2018-2023, the Council also wishes to consider other significant events, persons or themes of relevance to Fingal and its communities which should be commemorated during the period 2018-2023. This includes an exploration of the broader social and historical context of the period 1918-1923 which witnessed significant transformation at local, national and international levels. For example, the end of the Great War in 1918 led to independence not just for Ireland, but for many other countries across Europe. The Council also encourages ideas and suggestions for commemoration from outside the Irish experience reflecting the fact that Fingal is one of the most diverse counties in Ireland with residents from many different countries.
