Balbriggan Historical Society ended it's series of presentations for 2015 on a high on Wednesday night.
The Society is happy to work with history teacher Fiona McMaster in Loreto Secondary School to organise a History Project Competition and the winners presented their project on the night. The presentations from the students were as follows
Holly Keogh - History of Jacobs Biscuits
Eibhlin Mallon - 1937 Folklore Schools Scheme
Lubna Arzal - Gormanstown Army Camp and Airfield.
They were all excellent and we are delighted to see that the love of History is alive and well.
The evening continued with "An evening of Songs and Lore from the Fingal and East Meath area" from our Mayor of Fingal, David O'Connor. David treated us to some rare and wonderful old songs from the local area, including the Bold Black & Tan about the Sack of Balbriggan and songs about The Bellewstown Races, sad songs about shipwrecks and love songs extolling the beauty of local ladies. These great songs which tell the story of Fingal, were all delivered in David's relaxed friendly style, and left everyone wanting to hear more.
Our talks will resume in March 2016, and we are especially looking forward to our special 1916 commemoration day long event "1916 Balbriggan and beyond" on the 28th of May.
