Fingal County Council Host the second annual Oak Tree Commemorative Ceremony

Fingal County Council is delighted to have hosted this year’s Oak Tree Commemorative Ceremony in Malahide Demesne on June 18th.

This is the 2nd year that we have initiated applications for citizens to apply to purchase a tree within the Commemorative Grove in Malahide Demesne. The commemorative oak trees are powerful symbols of growth, strength and longevity.

The ceremony is normally timed to coincide with National Tree Week in March, but it had to be postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic.

Outgoing Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien, was in attendance along with Fingal County Council Chief Executive, AnnMarie Farrelly, Deputy Darragh O’Brien, Councillor Anthony Lavin and FCC Operations Department to celebrate the planting of thirteen commemorative trees in Malahide Demesne.

For the outgoing Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eoghan O’Brien, it was one of his last duties before handing over the chain of office to the current Mayor, Cllr David Healy. Cllr O’Brien said; “The commemorative oak tree grove here in Malahide is an important place for many of our citizens and it is an honour to be here today at the Oak Tree Commemorative Ceremony for one of my last events as Mayor of Fingal. In light of current circumstances, I am happy to see that Fingal staff have arranged for this important ceremony to go ahead in a safe manner and I hope it is an annual event which will continue for years to come.”

Speaking at the Ceremony Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said; “We are delighted to once again host the Oak Tree Commemorative Ceremony and give our citizens the opportunity to plant a tree in memory of a loved one. The commemorative oak tree grove in Malahide Demesne is a peaceful space where families and individuals can take time out to reflect and to celebrate the life of a relative or friend, which is particularly important during these difficult times.”

Fingal County Council memorial trees can only be considered for inclusion in parks where there is active supervision.
