Starting with what had been
a local Post Office & Shop in the centre of the village of
Naul in Fingal, north Co. Dublin, a small group of very dedicated
visionaries created The Seamus Ennis Cultural Centre and after
a few years of struggle have now an established and living testimony
to the memory of musician & music collector Seamus Ennis.

The
building itself is several hundred years old and had a straw thatched
roof. Following reconstruction and modernising (1999/2001) it
is used daily as coffee dock, restaurant, learning centre for
musicians, archive of cultural information & locals' meeting
place.

|
Then on 18th July 2006
disaster struck at just after 08,30 hrs when fire broke out right
in the heart of the building.
Locals & workers from a nearby building site worked heroically
to contain the fire until the arrival of the Fire Service from
Balbriggan.

|
|
A water tanker being used
locally was quickly on the scene and helped enormously to limit
the spread of the fire.
|
|
The Fire Service must
have broken all records as they arrived from Balbriggan in 'Formula
1' time and took control of events.
You can see the time sequence in the photographs. |
|
Although most of the valuable
database was destroyed by the fire, the fighting spirit that brought
the Seamus Ennis Centre into being is again to the fore. I'm reliably
informed that plans are at an advanced stage for the reconstruction
& repair of the Centre and it will be back ' flat out again'
at the earliest possible date.
They can be contacted at info@seamusenniscentre.com

We at www.Balbriggan.net
wish the Seamus Ennis Centre , Sean MacPhillibin & his team
at Naul our best wishes and we hope our friends will be supportive
to their efforts.
