Balbriggan.net
Guest Book.
A reminder to all to regularly check the guest book as we update
it every few days. Presently we are getting loads of entries stating
"Great site, keep up the great work etc". We don't put
these on the site as they mean nothing. and they don't appear to
have a valid email address. |

Bracken
Court Hotel.
At long last we have a hotel to be proud of, one that you can bring
visitors to and give them a good impression of our town. The earliest
photographs we have on the hotel date back to about 1910 when it
was called "The Hamilton Arms Hotel". The other name we
remember it by is"The Grand Hotel". Anybody out there
know the other names? Today we bring you 4 photographs of the hotel
starting in 1910 and then to the 1990's at its various stages of
construction. 26.08.06 |

Balbriggan-A
History......
This book was brought out in 2000 to celebrate the millenium and
on reading it recently we realised what an excellent book it is.
For those of you new to the town, it's an excellent way to get some
of the history of the town, like the "The Sack of Balbriggan"
when the Black & Tans burnt several houses on "Sinn Fein
Alley"(Clonard Street) and several businesses along Drogheda
street in reprisal for one of their members who was shot as he had
a drink in John D's pub.Update. This
book is now out of print. Visit the Historical
Web site for more details. |

Song
of The Balbriggan Cycling Club for 1891---The words.
We never knew such a song existed but exists it does. Thanks to
Patsy Casey, who gave Mr. T a photocopy of the song words. As with
most photocopies, the quality wasn't ideal, but using the latest
OCR software we were able to scan and edit the mistakes. So now
we have all the words to this song and so as not to spoil you with
all the words, we will give you the first few verses. Click on the
thumbnail to view. 26.08.06
Update. All
the words are there now. |

Anthony
McMahon meets Bertie.
Anthony, originally from High St but with now living on Church St(during
the summer) and San Jose California for the rest of the year, sent
us these two photos. First one shows him meeting An Taoiseach in
San Jose and the second photo is of a Lighthouse dome up at Carlingford
that is no longer in use. Anthony thinks it would fit perfectly
on the Balbriggan Lighthouse and it does look very like the original
one that we had until 1960. More about the lighthouse HERE

Man
identified.
At the end of June this year, we brought you this photo from "The
David Brangan Collection" and we enlarged his face to see if
anyone would recognise him. Well, would you believe it, we found
out his name. His name is Nicholas Markey, he is the brother of
Jack Benton's granny. He is Lily Martin's uncle and he fought for
the Cavalry in the first world war. For those new to the town, Jack
Benton is one of our team and is 80 years young and would be considered
one of the towns best photographers and one who showed immense courage
by changing over to digital at such an age.

Heat
wave in Balbriggan.
There seems no end to this heat wave, are we complaining? Certainly
not. Being a coastal town, we never get the temperatures they get
in the midlands or even 20 miles inland, we were probably getting
about 26°C with very high humidity. There was a crack of thunder
in Balbriggan on the 2nd of July at 11.05am the likes we have never
heard before. It was like an explosion and it set off numerous alarms
and the birds panicked. Today's photographs are by local photographer,
Barry Geraghty. If you see a photo of yourself on B.net, and wish
it to be removed, please let us know and we will remove it immediately.
Thanks to Barry for these.23.07.06 |

Balbriggan.net
unites Family.
The story goes something like this, Muriel Vaughan in Australia
posted the following on the guest book on the 2nd June, " What
a thrill to see a photo of my dad when he was a lad (national school48)
and also my granddad (Odwyers winners 1924). This is surely a precious
site, and I feel privileged to be connected in some small way to
this lovely town. Keep up the great work team! Muriel ". Because
of this, Muriel made contact with her relations in Balbriggan and
this weekend, in glorious sunshine, got to know her relations. Her
father is Johnny Knight, his brother is Joe. Her mother is Rose
Kelly from Lusk, related to Pat Kelly. Our reporter, Tony, is going
on memory so maybe we don't have everything spot on, so we are open
to correction. Click on the thumbnail to see two photos of the reunion.
The power of the Internet is amazing. The Power of B.net is even
more amazing. 23.07.06 |

Senior
Citizen living in Sandycove wants to swap accomodation to move
near Balbriggan.
Hi, Sorry to bother you , but maybe you could help me. I would
like to place an ad on your website, if possible, in relation
to council house transfer. I don't know if this is possible, but
you can advice me in any way. My father-in-law has an 1 bedroom
council apartment/flat in Sandycove area (senior citizen's accommodation),
5 min walk to dart station, but
he takes care of his grandson in Balbriggan area and it is very
difficult for him to commute between Sandycove and Balbriggan.
He is looking for similar dwelling in near North Dart line (from
Balbriggan to Malahide) and the person should be senior citizen
(60 years over). County Council allow mutual house transfers but
they have no database, nothing for this, and they told me to advertise
by myself. I found your website, which is very popular and a lot
of people in Balbriggan can see it, so it is a great way to make
as many people as possible to see this ad.
If you think you can help, contact us and we will forward your
corrospondence. 12.07.06
