The Balbriggan Motor Company Ltd 1932 The next time you are on Railway/Station Street, have a look at the building that houses "Around A Pound". In 1932 it was a thriving motor business and probably one of the busiest in the "Irish Free State" as it was known then. It was run by a Mr Daly who started the business in 1922 and as you will read, there was "garage" for 40 cars. This article appeared in "Town & Country News" in 1932 and was given to us by Joe Curtis. Click on the thumbnail to read this short but very interesting article. 11.05.12

Strictly Come Dancing, Man O'War's Biggest Fundraising Event! Over 1100 members of our terrific community showed their great support by attending Fingals's biggest fundraiser "Strictly Come Dancing" organised by Man O'War GFC. The North County County Cricket Club, Balrothery, was the setting for a fantastic evenings entertainment and fundraising, decked out with dance stage, lighting and sound with video cameras and four full screens. Twenty-four dancers had completed seven weeks of intensive training, under the guidance of professional dance instructor Lynn Jackson, to prepare for the big night. Their commitment endurance, dedication and teamwork payed off with two brilliant group dances and then their coupled dances which were judged and voted on for winning title. The three Dance judges were Lynn Jackson, Ex Dubs legend Barney Rock and local Cricket legend John Mooney. The winning title went to popular couple Siobhan O'Connor, Balrothery and Gary Ryan, Lusk with their fabulous and faultless Tango dance, winning them top scores from judges and highest audience vote. Well done to Man O'War GFC Fundraising Committee, Main Sponsors, Dance Sponsors and dedicated Dancers for all the hard work and professional organisation, a truly memorable night! Irish Girl Guides For Balbriggan The Irish Girl Guides (I.G.G) are hoping to set up a Guide unit in Balbriggan in September 2012. A Brownie unit has been set up and is proving very popular. The age group for Brownies is 7-11 years old and the age group for Guides is 11-14 years old. The Irish Girl Guides is a uniquely girl-only, youth-driven, active and dynamic organisation. The girls enjoy activities as they can ‘just be girls’ without any pressure, whilst while learning the skills that will one day help them to be responsible citizens and adults. I.G.G are looking for both unit leaders and unit helps to help run the Guide unit. Training is available and new leaders would be supported by a Regional Development Officer until the leaders felt confident in running the group by themselves. It is a great opportunity for potential volunteers to come on board at the beginning and make the Guide unit a huge success.
If you are interested in volunteering, or have a query about your daughter joining Brownies or Guides you can contact Lisa Dunne at: ldunneigg@gmail.com or 0879763318. You can also get more information on becoming a leader at: http://www.irishgirlguides.ie/index.php/becoming-a-volunteer-2

Blue Tits Nesting In Hampton Green Last year we moved our Bird box when we realised it was located in the wrong place. It should be facing North/North East, 2 meters from the ground, not in direct sunlight during the day( the heat kills the chicks). The other day we just happened to check the bird box but due to its height, we had to use our iPhone to see into it and imagine our surprise when we captured this photo. Sand Dunes Because of the strong easterly winds of late, the beach, and more especially the "dunes" have taken a real battering and now resemble the surface of the moon. Sunday morning was like a sand storm with sand been blown up as far as Quay street. Lets hope these easterly winds abate or else we'll have no sand sand left on the beach. Click to see a few photos we took with our phone. 30.04.12

Sand Sand Everywhere The strong easterly winds of recent days has caused drifting of sand down by the Harbour. This car was parked by the Harbour wall and it was covered in sand. The Council were there trying to clear the sand from the road but it was a loosing battle and as soon as the cleared it, more sand appeared within minutes. The sand is even accumulating in the park as you will see from the photos. Also, on the beach there was some sort of "creature", hundreds of them with a plastic appearance. We thought it was a plastic molding cut in two. Has anyone any idea what they are. Click on the thumbnail to see what we're talking about. 27.04.12

Lurcher found near Ardgillan Here is an email we just received, "I found this dog wondering around last Sunday near Ardgillan. She had a wound on the inside of her back leg which the vet said she probably got jumping over a wall or a fence. She had no collar and wasn’t microchipped. I took her to Dogs Aid in Ballymun where is now (they gave her the name Nancy). She had a lovely temperament and seemed like she was somebody’s pet. Would love to locate the owner." New Pooper Scooper, Could The Council Do With One Of These? Here is a new device that we spotted in one of the local pet shops, it's a spring loaded pooper scooper. It's not something you'd bring with you while walking the dogs but its ideal for picking up the mess in the back garden etc. Our suggestion is that the council could get something like this to pick up the dog dirt that irresponsible dog owners have left behind. Its ideal and its spring loaded which makes removing the dirt from the grass very simple. The situation is terrible and calls for drastic action. We bought this device in Millfield and it cost € 20. Click on the thumbnail to see it in action. 24.04.12
New Dog Pooh Posters But Do We Need Cameras? We see Fingal County Council have placed new posters near the Harbour reminding dog owners to clean up after their dog. We have to say it's disgusting the amount of dog dirt that's still about the place but yet, the dog pooh bins are always well used and the bins in Ardgillan are also well used by dog owners. So who is doing this and what can be done. Are far as we are aware, no one in Balbriggan has ever been prosecuted for not cleaning up after their dog. The only solution we think is to have cameras about the town and especially around the beach area. The cameras would also help with anti-social behavior and we think they'd pay for themselves by reducing such carry on. Your comments welcome. 24.04.12

Two More "Balbriggan With a Difference" Photos Today we bring you two more photos to show what a beautiful town we live in. The first shows the Harbour and the second shows the Boathouse which we hope you like. Click on the thumbnail to view. 17.04.12
Graffiti "Cover Up" We see Irish rail have put their hands in their pocket to clean up the Graffiti in the Seapoint underpass. They've done a great job and the place looks so clean and tidy and we just hope its not used as a clean canvas by some. We've heard mention that there are hidden cameras in certain locations to see who are the culprits but we can't be sure how true it is. On another note, we see two windows on the old AIB band have been broken and boarded up. This is all we need now when the town is struggling through this recession, it makes the town look shabby and uninviting and doesn't help the situation. Click on the thumbnail to see how well the underpass looks and lets hope it stays that way for a long time. 17.04.12
Mamma Mia, Tonight & Wednesday Night Balbriggan Community College are staging "Mamma Mia" in the Bracken Court Hotel tonight and tomorrow night starting at 8pm. We were invited along to their dress rehearsal yesterday. A lot of work has gone into this production so we hope lots of you go along to support them. They are a great gang of kids and something like this is great bonding between them all. Our Tony took a few photos during rehearsals and we thank them for their co-operation and we bring them to you now so have a look and see who you recognise. Break a leg everyone. McNally Funeral Home Official Opening Patrick & Monica Hickey officially opened their new premises with the help of Vincent Donnelly & Sean McNally. Saturday was 11years to the day when Patrick & Monica purchased the business from Sean, they had hoped to open the premises on the 2nd of March which is the 40th anniversary of Patrick's father. Vincent Donnelly spoke highly of his nephew, Pat and Sean said he couldn't think of anyone better to take over the business. Fr. Eugene blessed the premises and commented on what Sean had said earlier about it been "a hell of a place" which was received by laughter and applause. Fr. Eugene also quipped by saying "this was a great place to be in, Standing" and finally he said he was asked to exorcise the old Manager's room but declined when he realised it's still a Manager's room. Anyway, it was a great day, very well attended with over 150 invited guests there and all catered for with tea and sandwiches and wine. We here at B.net wish Patrick & Monica and all the staff well in their new venture and we just hope that we don't have to avail of their service in the near future. Barney Greene Hits 80 Born on March 26th, 1932, Barney Greene has lived most of his life in the Man-O-
War, a quiet townland only a stone's throw from Lusk, Skerries and Balbriggan in
North County Dublin. Barney started to work on the land when he was eleven years old, being taught to plough with horses by a local man named Johnny Kelly from Quickpenny Comer. As a young man Barney spent some time in London, as did many Irish people at that time, because that's where the work was. Some years later he returned to Ireland and worked for Kelly's of Portlaoise, building haybarns through-out Ireland. He travelled all over the country, and as a result there are few places in Ireland that he doesn't know to this day. He also worked in Technicon in Swords, and later as store man for the county council in the Balbriggan depot. more

Balbriggan Pipe Band c1950 Here is a great photo, last brought to you some years back but this time we have all the names plus some background information on many of them. It was taken on Market Green, about 1950 by a professional photographer, so the quality is excellent. There is only about 3 of them still alive. Mrs Murtagh's Shop Following on from yesterdays phenomenal response to The Carey's Shop photos, Mrs Murtagh shop was mentioned on our Face Book page. Mrs Murtagh was a lovely woman who loved her dog and one thing we remembered about this shop was the faded, boxes of Corn Flakes in the shop window on Hampton street. We were never in the shop and we think it closed in the late 1990's. Feel free to tell us your memories of this shop. Click on the thumbnail to view this classic photo. 12.04.12

1991 View From Railway Station
Looking south from Balbriggan railway station we see the spire of St. George's church. The church was completed in 1816 without the spire we see today and, to much regret was lost to a fire in 1835. The church was immediately rebuilt and during the intervening period church services were held in a school classroom. St. George's stands in what we call Church St., however the original name was George's St. and it ran all the way to the sea from Hampton St. until the railway opened in 1844.Click on the thumbnail to view. 11.04.12

1991 View of The Cooley Mountains From Balbriggan How peaceful the scene looks on a calm day; the view of the Cooley Mountains. The Cooley's are the Mountains on the Louth side of Carlingford Lough while the Mourne Mountains are just beyond them in County Down. The highest point in the Cooley's is Slieve Foye or in Gaelic, Sliabh Feá which stands at 589 metres or 1930 feet. Click on the thumbnail to view. 10.04.12
Sally Brennan
Some weeks back we published a photograph of Sally Brennan, her daughter June and Jack Benton. June, saw the photo from her home in England and has sent us the following email and photo of her Mam, "Hello Tony, It was great to see the photo of mum with Jack and myself. I expect quite a few people in Balbriggan wonder what has happened to mum. I can tell you that she is very well and this is a photo of her on Mother's Day. She is in St Mary's in Phoenix Park. It is a beautiful place and she is getting the best of care. We still have long chats about Balbriggan and she remembers the old days really well. Thought you would like to see this and maybe you can put it on your site. Regards, June (Ashby) nee Moran." Thanks for the photo June, your Mam looks great. Hoare's Pitch & Putt Who remembers this wonderful Pitch & Putt course at Balrothery? It was run by Willie Hoare and we used to play here a couple of times a year. These photos were taken in August 2003 and it really was a great place to go and play and enjoy the scenery. Unfortunately, it closed some years back but at least we have a few photos to remind us how beautiful it was. There are some lads in the photos and if you recognise anyone, please let us know. Mobile Media Store - Statement - 5th April 2012 It is with deep sadness and regret that the family owned business Mobile Media Store, established over three years and well-known in Balbriggan is to cease trading. The company could not continue to trade in light of its current financial constraints the store has closed with immediate effect. While we traded very successfully since opening in 2009, from the middle of 2011 we suffered a steep decline, the level of footfall on Balbriggan’s main streets has all but dissipated since March 2011. Untidy streets, parking restrictions & aggressive imposition of parking fines and a rising bad element of loitering and criminal activity on the streets are seriously prohibitive to trading.More

She is actually on twice, opening the show with her fellow Team Kian contestants and the man himself as well as her individual performance later on. Who Remembers This Practice? Following very severe damage by fire the business of Economy Wallpapers moved temporarily next door. Years ago the pole on the pavement outside the shop was a favourite landing spot for Starlings. The Starling droppings did little to endear them to the locals and at regular intervals Mr McDonnell would come out and beat the base of the pole with a large stick to frighten the birds away. As school children we found this practice hilarious. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge. 05.04.12

Beautiful "John Hinde" Style Picture Postcard Here is a great photo from about 1969 and when we first saw it, it looked like a John Hinde postcard. At first we thought it was mid 60's but then we noticed that the Lighthouse Dome is not there, so that dates it to maybe the early 1970's. Speaking about John Hinde, does anyone know if he ever published any Balbriggan postcards. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge. 03.04.12. Update, the Dome was removed in 1960 and this photo is c1966

Submarine Story Was an April Fool Judging by our Face Book page, you really enjoyed our April Fool this year. It caught out a few people, even just for a few minutes which was the intention. We hope Jimmy Hamilton didn't mind us including his name in the story. We must go through the archives and put together all the April Fool's we've done over the past 10 years. Thanks. 02.04.12
Submarine Spotted In Balbriggan Harbour Yesterday, saw one of the strangest sights in Balbriggan for many a year when a medium sized Submarine limped into Balbriggan Harbour obviously with engine trouble. One of the officers was seen leaving the Sub and spoke to local man Jimmy Hamilton. The officer then proceeded up the town only to return to the Sub a short while later. We asked Jimmy what the officer had said to him and Jimmy replied that they needed some WD40 and some cheese and as Jimmy said, "I directed them to Charlie Corr's on Drogheda street." It was all over in less than 30 minutes and the Submarine quietly made its way back out to sea and then submerged. If anyone else got pictures of the Sub, email them to us. Click on the thumbnail to see the Sub. 01.04.12
Storm Damages Harbour Wall Today we bring you some photographs from January 1979 when a storm badly damaged the Harbour Wall near the Lighthouse. We've never seen these photographs before and the quality of the first two in particular is brilliant, probably slides. We see there was also snow about which is especially visible in the last photo taken from the Viaduct. Do you remember this happening and if so feel free to share your memories on our face book page or through the Guest Book page. Click on the thumbnail to view todays photos. 30.03.12

Update On Recent Burglaries In Balbriggan We have received some correspondence from Louise Butler in the Policing Form on the recent spate of burglaries in the town. Balbriggan Sunset & Silhouette We were out with the dogs last night (with pooper scooper) down by the Lighthouse and we bring you two photos. The first was two young girls having great fun at the waters edge and we think it has great atmosphere. We spoke to the parent to show the type photograph we were taking of the girls and that they couldn't be identified and she was happy with that. Unfortunately, you have to be very careful photographing children and its good to get permission and identify yourself. The second photo we got was of a Lighthouse with a great reflection on the Lighthouse in the water. The Lighthouse also gave us permission to take its photo. 1998 Balbriggan Film Set Who remembers the film, Sweety Barrett, starring Brendan Gleeson. Did you know a lot of the scenes were shot in and around Balbriggan Harbour. They certainly went to a lot of trouble to make the harbour look like a scrap yard. They even painted the Lighthouse a mustard colour, which when they repainted it white, still managed to be visible for several years until it repainted properly about 3 years ago. Balbriggan Community Policing Forum will promote different aspects of safety and crime over the next few weeks. This week they would like to raise awareness of the issue of Graffiti. Graffiti on walls in our estates and town is a serious problem for the community. Graffiti is a crime under the Criminal Damage Act, 1991. Offenses can be reported to the Garda for investigation. Graffiti impacts negatively the value of community space and property. Graffiti makes people fearful of their own neighbourhoods. more

Huge Turn Out Against Burglaries We reckon between 200 and 300 people turned out tonight in the Bracken Court Hotel to see what can be done to bring those responsible to justice. If you wish to register to help by being the eyes and ears of your area, please email your details to the following address, "balbrigganresidents@gmail.com". Unfortunately there were no local TD's or Councillors or Garda at the meeting but its hoped they will be at the next meeting. As a concerned resident, myself, Tony Healy, I was there and I am going to make representations to my local TD's and keep contacting them until something is done. There is a lot of fear out there and it needs to be addressed ASAP. We purposefully didn't take any photographs tonight. So please email the above address so they can guide you on what can legally be done so people can live in Balbriggan in peace and harmony. Please, please, remind your elderly neighbours not to open their doors unless they know who's there. Well done to the three lads who organised the meeting, professionally and making sure everyone keep within the law. Our TD's should be bombarded with emails, texts and visits to their clinics to put pressure on them to get the resources into Balbriggan to stop this carry on once and for all. Thank You. 23.13.12

Joan and John Mckenna celebrate their 40th Wedding anniversary today. Wishing them a happy anniversary from Stephen, Margarete, Laura and Mark. They'll be celebrating their anniversary with a break to the Isle of Skye with son and daughter Stephen and Laura and Stephens girlfriend Margarete. As an aside: John's side of the family (McKenna) originally came from Skye and moved to Balbriggan in the late 1800's - they apparently had the first motor powered fishing boats in Balbriggan Harbour. John and Joan have previously worked in Wavin and Cronins Pharmacy in the town and are well known in Balbriggan. Balbriggan's Town Crier We hope you all had a lovely weekend, we were in Prague for the week, if you've never been there, put it on your list, it's unbelievable. Anyway, back to normality and today we bring you an unusual photo of a Town Crier. It was taken during an Arts week festival and we have no idea who he is. A town crier is a person who is employed by a town council to make public announcements in the streets. The crier can also be used in court or official announcements. Criers often dress elaborately, a tradition known from the 18th century, in a red and gold robe, white breeches, black boots and a tricorne hat. St. Patrick's Day Parade Photos Today we bring you over 100 photos of the parade through Balbriggan. We were away and its only now we see how bad the weather was. If you see a picture you like, email us, give us the reference number and we'll email it to you at print quality so you can get it printed in one of the local shops. We see Sharon Gaynor in the photos along with Eric so keep an out for some YouTube footage of Sharon singing at the Parade. The photos are courtesy of Balbriggan Town Council and photographer was Lynnette McNally. Click on the thumbnail to view the parade photos, we've no names due to the adverse conditions. 19.03.12

More House Break-Ins Here is an email we received last night and the sender wishes to remain anonymous, "Just to alert people that a house was broken into in Fancourt Heights this evening at 1930. If you could mention it on the site to bring awareness, there has been many break ins in the past weeks and there doesn't seem to be any Garda presence at all around?? What are they doing about this as it is obviously the same people. My parents are here most of the day but would be quite helpless if someone was to break in, as they obviously have no quams about doing so in broad daylight." Can we all be vigilant and keep an extra eye on our elderly neighbours. Thank You. 13.03.12

House Break Ins There seems to be a real problem in Balbriggan/Skerries with break ins and general vandalism and arson. Yesterdays comments on our Face Book page made for chilling reading but we believe the same 4 names have been suggested. Here is part of another email, " ....had her front house windows broken in the last three weeks some teenagers with catapults etc are doing it, the Gardai say that they have also targeted some shop fronts in the town. Perhaps you should enlighten the people of this also and see if anyone knows anything or what can be done, to perhaps prevent it from happening again, she now has to claim off her Insurance to get them repaired, This is scandalous behaviors the culprits should be caught named and shamed.." All we can suggest is to be vigilant, keep an eye on elderly neighbours and ring the Garda if you suspect anything. 08.03.12

Balbriggan House Break Ins
Hello Tony, I wonder if you are aware of the amount of house break ins going on across the town these last few months. There have houses been broken into in Fancourt Heights where the window has been removed (people asleep up stairs). A few houses in Hampton Cove have been targeted also. One such house was broken into while the owners and elderly couple where dealing with the fact that the wife was terminally ill in hospital. If you could bring peoples attention to this on your site fine. Maybe a town wide neighbourhood watch alert! Some one knows some thing, its not just Fancourt and Hampton cove either. I myself am putting out a €1000 bounty across facebook for one of the names, I won't say who told me if I get a name. There would be quite a few people happy just to have 1 name! I think it would do a lot towards stopping this spate of house break ins..

Corcoran's on The Hill Where Economy Wallpapers is situated was well known as 'Corcoran's of the hill' and Whelan's was Halls. Both were etched in Balbriggan folklore as providers of Ice Cream. The big difference being that Halls sold hard, 'block' ice cream in wafer form whereas Corcoran's sold soft, homemade ice cream. Just thinking about makes the mouth water; for a special treat you could have homemade ice cream with strawberry sauce in a glass bowl; or maybe with raspberry instead. S.S Peter & Paul JNS celebrates World Book Day S.S. Peter & Paul Junior School in Balbriggan celebrated World Book Day in style on the 1st of March. There was a school wide competition held to mark the special day. Each pupil could draw their favourite book character or write a book review. The standard was very high and judging proved very difficult. There was great excitement throughout the school as the winners were announced. Each winner got to choose a new book. Other classes visited Balbriggan library, brought in their favourite book to share with their classmates, enjoyed book quizzes and other reading activities. Remember one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a passion for reading. That passion is clear to see in S.S. Peter & Paul's! Click on the thumbnail to see photos of the winners. Beautiful Dog Spotted on Balbriggan Beach No, before you say anything, its not lost, the owner was there but we just had to take a photograph of this beautiful dog. The lady asked us could she get the photo and we gave her our email address but we just had to publish it. We think the owner was from Eastern Europe so communication was a little difficult but we did manage to make out that its only 3 months old and Red Setter was mentioned. Doesn't really look like a Red Setter to us. We hope his paw is better today as he was limping when we saw him. Anyway, click on the thumbnail to see how beautiful he is. 01.03.12
Ashling Dry Cleaners/Berney -- History Lesson The building which houses Ashling Dry Cleaners has seen very many changes of use: Bank, Police Station, Offices, CYMS Snooker Rooms to name a few. This building played a major part in Television coming to Balbriggan as it was here that Berney had their offices. Berney supplied a very large number of locals with their first tele. Who remembers "Berney" in Balbriggan and has anyone any stories about Television coming to the town. Email us "news at balbriggan.net" or use our Face Book page or Guest Book. Click on the thumbnail to view the building in question as seen in 1991. 03.03.12
Garage Fire at Seabanks Only last week, a house down by the Harbour was set on fire and yesterday, a garage was also set alight. Luckily no one was injured and it was mainly wood that was stored in the garage that was destroyed but whoever is responsible for these actions should be warned that loss of life is always a possibility. The local Fire Brigade were there in a matter of minutes to bring the blaze under control. Lets hope this is the end of this type of carry on before something more serious happens. Click on the thumbnail to see the garage in question. 01.03.12.

Truck Crash Outside Grand Hotel & Cumisky's House
The last day of February, can you believe it? Two photographs for you this morning, the first is probably from the late 1980's, it shows the Cumisky house on Drogheda Street where Supervalu is now. The second shows a traffic accident where s truck crashed into a mini outside the Grand Hotel. Judging by the hair style of one of the ladies, it looks like the 1960's but we suspect it is probably the 1970's. We have an interesting entry on the Guest Book which is worth reading. The Recession Has Ended We here, honestly think the recession is over or, at the very least, is ending. Personally speaking here, photography business is booming again, companies we deal with are all saying things are definitely getting better. Companies like HP, SKY, Google, PayPal, are taking on hundreds of people, how many years is it now since we heard of companies taking on this amount of people. Farmers are doing great, land prices for farmers is on the up again. Houses are beginning to sell again although still nothing like what it was before. Great to see a deal signed with the Chinese vice-president to help improve our exports to this massive country. Don’t get us wrong here, we do know business in Balbriggan are struggling but we do think things will get better as the entire country improves. We just want to get our views out there that we think things are on the turn and that if we all try to look on the positive, put the last few years behind us and learn from it and look forward to a prosperous Balbriggan in the future. Your views welcome, especially if you agree. Onwards and upwards. 21.02.12

Don Kelly & Cag Richardson Havin a Laugh Here is a great photo from 1988 taken at the corner of Chapel Street and it shows Don kelly & Cag Richardson having a great laugh. Isn't is just wonderful to see people having a laugh and a smile. It really is one of the great characteristics of the Irish, a laugh, the craic and a "Hello" or a nod to those who we see around. It's one of the things that has been pointed out to us when visitors from abroad are with us and we are walking down near the Beach, most people say hello or "our" when passing a local. Tourists love to see that friendliness among people. Comments welcome on this topic, are Balbriggan people a friendly lot?. Click on the thumbnail to see these lads having a laugh. 16.02.12

Balbriggan Tidy Towns plant over 1,000 hedge plants in only 3 weeks ! Balbriggan Tidy Towns team have had a third successive Saturday of planting. This week (11th Feb) the team were on the verge across from the round-about on the Harry Reynolds Road, planting 300 Pyracantha bushes up against a wall prone to graffiti. It is hoped this famously thorny species will put a stop to this terrible scourge senseless vandalism. A team of approx 12 Tidy towns members and local residents worked systematically to plant a hedge that will produce wonderful foliage and glowing red flowers later in the growing season which are attractive to a wide variety of wild bee species and butterflies. Again thanks are due to Balbriggan Town council and in-particular Town Clerk Brian Murray for the support given to this significant planting project.more

Who Remembers Willie McMahon of Hampton Place Here is a lovely email we received, "Hello there, My name is Mick O’Gorman and I lived in Balbriggan from 1979 to 1985. In that time I made friends with a gentleman called Willie McMahon, who at the time was 94 years of age.He live in a house in Hampton Place, which was part of a house and shop on Hampton Street/Hampton Place. Although I was in my early twenties and Willie was 94, on my visits to him in his home he frequently exhausted me with his energy, enthusiasm and razor-sharp memory. I thoroughly enjoyed his company, and sadly had moved away from Balbriggan when he passed on, and that was the end of that. Willie is buried in Balbriggan but I cannot locate his grave. He is buried with his wife and an infant child that they lost very early on. He was an employee of Smyth’s Hosiery most of his life. more
Balbriggan Maritime Museum
This Thursday in the Bracken Court Hotel, from 9am to 9pm, there will be a
pop up Maritime Museum. It has been initiated to show Fingal CoCo, elected Representatives and the Heritage Council how a Maritime Museum might operate in Balbriggan and is aimed at getting funding to establish a permanent museum in the town. Such a tourist facility would enhance visitor numbers to the town.

Train Derailed in 1989 Seeing as it was all trains of late, today we bring you a photo from 1989 when a train derailed in Balbriggan. Does anyone know the year it was demolished? Click on the thumbnail to view. 03.02.12
Balbriggan, A Charming, Charming Place Those are the words uttered by Michael Portillo as he got off the train at Balbriggan and we have to agree with him, it really is one of the nicest views in Ireland. Would people agree with that? Has anyone any comments about the show, feel free to share them on our Face Book page or Guest Book. Maybe Gerard Bisette, the lad who spoke to Michael on the train might like to share what happened etc. This YouTube video has proved very popular with over 500 views in about 18 hours.

Balbriggan Maritime Museum needs your HELP ! As you may be aware Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce has been supporting a project to establish a Balbriggan Maritime Museum. This initiative resulted from the last Economic Conference held in Oct 2010. It is envisaged that the Museum will be an important educational repository for the vast maritime history and artifacts associated with Balbriggan and the North Fingal Coast line. In addition the facility will provide a tourist facility that will increase visitor footfall to the town and help raise the profile of Balbriggan nationally and internationally as heritage coastal destination. more
Watch BBC, ITV, CH4, CH5 on iPhone & Saorview Here's an App we have to tell you about, if you have an iPhone and want to watch the English stations, you can for FREE and its legal. It's called "FilmOn" and you can get it through the "App Store" on your phone. We've been using it for several months ago when John Maguire told us and more and more people are using it, especially for Ch5. It lists irish stations but only UTV and BBC NI are there, no RTE yet. Give it a go, you can also use it on your PC but it's best on the iPhone and is probably available for android phones now. On a similar topic, with the turn off of Analog TV in UK and Ireland on the 23rd of October, some people are saying they are going to get the "Saorview". The problem here is that you only get the Irish stations on saorview, our suggestion is that you go for either SKY or UPC. If you go for Saorview, you'll need to get a satellite dish and decoder to get the English stations. Feel free to add to this on our Face Book page. Click on the thumbnail to go to the FilmOn web site. 25.01.12

MBNA Fake Web Site We received an email yesterday from MBNA about our Credit Card and when we clicked on the link we noticed the address at the very top of the page didn't say www.MBNA.ie. The web page looked exaxtly like the genuine one so always have a look at the address bar, at the top of this page reads www.balbriggan.net. This applies to all web sites like AIB, Bank of Ireland etc, so if ever you get an email from one of these banks, it's more than likely a fake and you should not click where they tell you to. Bringing Home The Fish in 1979 Two fabulous photos for you this morning thanks to messes Benton/Curtis. The first photo is of great interest to us as we have never seen the Harbour and Gas works from this angle. Also of interest is the guy walking away from the camera with two large fish in his hands. There were plastic bags in 1979 and what they used to do was bring a ball of string down to the harbour and the string would be threaded through the gills of the fish and it was known as a "Hank of Fish" and it wasn't uncommon to see certain men carrying about 6 stone of fish home. The second photo is also from 1979 and it shows 2 "locals" working on a boat with another enjoying the sun. Click on the thumbnail to view both photos. 17.01.12

Bran is Home, Here's the Official Story
Hi Tony, Thank you for highlighting Bran’s story on Balbriggan.net, he is now at home and loving the all the attention he is getting from the family and our neighbours.
Bran had been around the estate for quite a while before we took him in, my Dad couldn’t sleep one night knowing he was outside in the snow so he got up and brought him in. As you know my Dad passed away last year and I will take full responsibility that a licence was not obtained and vet visits not followed up on. My Dad would always have looked after our pets affairs and I shouldn’t have overlooked this. My mother had enough on her plate last year and I should have stepped in there and sorted everything out, I can’t apologise enough that this happened.more
Save Bran The save Bran campaign certainly took hold on our Face Book page with things getting heated at times. We now know it was a complicated situation and the latest news we have is that the original owner, who now lives in New Zealand, got in touch. We hope to have more information later today, lots of influential people are working on the situation to bring it to a happy ending. Stay tuned here.

The story of Bran- Bran was strayed by his previous owners in Hampton cove in Balbriggan. Flan, Ronan’s dad who has since sadly passed away took bran into the Kiernan family home were he has been loved and looked after for almost 2 years. Last Thursday the dog warden from Aston pound took Bran from the estate as he had got out of the house and was on the street. The Kiernan’s, worried about the whereabouts of their dog contacted Ashton pound and were told if they produced a dog licence and paid the fine they could have him back. They went to Ashton pound and produced a licence and the cash to pay the fine but they were told they could not have Bran back as they had reports that he is not their dog. Since last Thursday the Kiernan’s have been up to Ashton pound 3 times to try and get Bran back but on each occasion they have been refused. Bran has been cared for and lived in the Kiernan’s family home for almost two years.more

Bridge Street Photo Here is part of a great Benton/Curtis photograph and speaking to Ralph Richardson yesterday he suggested we show this part of the photo and see if we can identify as many as possible. He thinks he can spot the Bulldog McGarry, Chigga kenny and Luke Healy, Spanner Brannigan, Witch Gilsenan and the Gilly Gilbert to name but a few. So, using the numbers, see who name the most and we'll give the first person to name everyone (or the most) a Balbriggan Mug, feck the expense, we'll take the hit. You can enter this competition using our Face Book Page or the Guest Book HERE. Click on the thumbnail to view this photo which we think is from 1972. 09.01.12
