Has
Balbriggan got more Nick Names than any other town?
This was the question posed the other night by Ralph Richardson
to our Tony and others. Ralph then went on to rattle off
a load of nick-names as did his wife Ann. Also coming up
with lots of names were Nancy & Richie(Declan) Richardson,
Jim & Linda Richardson and Yvonne Healy. We have over
100 nick-names for you here and we have 3 questions. 1.
Is this unique to Balbriggan and if so, Why? 2. All our
nick-names, except one, are men, why? 3. How do they get
the names? Eventually we will organise all the names into
alphabetical order and add any names we receive. Click Here
to see the list we have compiled.30.12.06 |

Jack
& Attracta Campbell.
Here is another email we received.
Dear Tony and crew,
Merry Christmas and happy new year. My parents Jack and
Attracta Campbell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
on St. Stephen's day this year, and as two true Balbriggan
people, my family and I would gratefully appreciate you
putting their picture on the website. They were both born
and reared in Clonard Street Balbriggan and were married
on December 26th 1956..That night, they sailed to England
where my dad worked for London transport, but thankfully,
returned home to Balbriggan in the mid 60's where they have
been living in Curran Park since. They are very active in
the community and are well known.
Many thanks in advance and we hope to continue to enjoy
the great work the website provides. My sister Alison, who
now lives in North Carolina, regularly checks the site to
see the events from home. Best regards, Eric, Alison, Catherine,
Paula and John Campbell. As

Lights on 2 houses. On
our travels around the town we noticed one house in particular
that had a spectacular array of lights. I think we all know
the one, it's on your right just after you come off the
motorway at the junction which leads down to the Sunday
Market. A beautiful display and our Tony got permission
to photography the various lights. We also have another
photo of a house near Wavin. Click on the thumbnail to view.

Church
Concert with "Essence" Delights crowd.
A concert was held last night in the
church to help fund the restoration of same. "Essence",
a duet of Paul Redmond and Karen Lynch, delivered a very
polished act of festive tunes and more. The lighting was
superb for creating the atmosphere, total darkness except
for special lights on Paul & Karen. A really beautiful
night was had by all. Father Michael was the butt of many
a joke by "Essence" but it was all in good humour. We
have some photos and a snippet of music from the show where
you will hear a section of a song written by Paul, "I
promise to Love you", a great wedding song. Well done
to Fr. Murtagh, and especially to Essence for a beautiful
night. HERE

Lights Turn
on---Big turn out.
There
was a huge turnout
on the square on Friday night to witness the switching
on of the Christmas lights. A dry but bitterly cold night
helped make it a very enjoyable night for those who were
well wrapped up. Santa Clause was there himself and every
child got a selection box. Balbriggan.net
were there in force with no less
than 5 photographers, Brian Howley, Martin Fanning, Jack
Benton, Tony Healy and Ronan Carey. We have loads of photos
for you here, we have made them big for your enjoyment.
If there is a particular one you anyone wants, I am sure
we can email them a print quality version.Click on thumbnail

The
Bell Hill. Hi
there, I am writing a long poem on the loss of the Bell
Hill, and have conflicting information on the 3 local fishermen
who rowed out to try and rescue them. Is there anyone who
can tell me their names, and if there was a 4th person with
them.
Also, the name of the survivor. I also understand that a
spar from the ship was made into a bench and placed on the
harbour as a memorial. Is this correct and if so is it still
there? Finally, like many, I too have placed stones on the
sailors grave, but understand that the area is to be developed
in the near future and was wondering if a permanent memorial
to them and all lost at sea, is to be erected?Any help or
information will be much appreciated.Roger. 07.12.2006 |

Restoration
of Lighthouse----Latest news. For
those new to the town, our Lighthouse used to have a dome

The
Wedding of the Year. Saturday
11th November saw one of the weddings of the year when beautiful
Denise Fanning married local man, Neil McMahon in St. Peter
& Paul's Church Balbriggan. Denise, daughter of Martin
& Kathleen Fanning, became Mrs McMahon when she married
Neil, son of Micheal & Maria McMahon. The celebrant
was Fr. Michael Murtagh, whom, as usual delivered a lovely
ceremony with some great humour added to relax everyone.
Never have we seen so many cameras at a wedding, video and
stills, as the local photographic group were guests including
Jack & Chris Benton, Brian & Irene Howley and Tony
& Yvonne Healy. A truly beautiful day from the beginning
to the end where the guests danced the night away at the
Glenside Hotel. We at B.net wish Denise & Neil, every
happiness and good health in their lives together.

Football Pundit and Legend Johnny Giles visits Balbriggan!
He played for Manchester United and
Leeds United and represented Ireland in an illustrious career
and then on to manage West Brom and Ireland but Johnny Giles
will forever be remembered for his insightful and thought
provoking critique of the Beautiful Game’ of soccer.
Three cheers to the Balbriggan Arts Festival committee for
enticing such a top class speaker and Johnny was warm, friendly
and told us all exactly how it was. He regaled us all with
his stories of the Leeds greats…Billy Bremner, Jack
Charlton, Allan Clarke and before that playing at Old Trafford
with Bobby Charlton and even playing two reserve matches
with the great Georgie Best.
Johnny also took time out afterwards to meet and greet all
of the packed room in the Ardgillen Suite in the Bracken
Court Hotel and it was highly entertaining event.Brian Howley

Book entries---Bogus mails
We now receive over 20 guest book entries every day, most
are SPAM and we can tell they are by a variety of ways.
Unfortunately, people are now pretending to be locals, and
posting messages about other locals and we have had to remove
entries following correspondence from the "real"
persons. Subsequently, will have to be more suspicious of
guest book mails and if we have any suspicion that it is
a bogus message, we wouldn't put it on the site. So, if
your message doesn't appear on the guest book after 7 days,
email us directly to info@balbriggan.net where we can then
verify the authenticity of the mail. |

Sean
Carey wants to be on Balbriggan.net
Sometimes, when you're the uncle and you know the lads who
run B.net, you get requests from your nephews to have their
photo put on the web. This is one of those occasions and
we are only too delighted to oblige. Sean is the son of
Brian & Phyllis Carey and we think he has the "X"
factor, great singer, dancer and all round entertainer.
Sean will be singing in the Point Theatre in Dublin, Nov
27th. So now, Sean, you can tell all your friends that your
road to fame has already started. Click on the thumbnail

Regularly we are asked about accommodation in the town and

England and we are on the lookout for a nice B&B. So
if you run one, or know of one, send us the details, and
we will create an "Accommodation Page" on the

Gael Scoil opens in Sunshine House
Monday 4th September will be an historic day for the people
of Balbriggan. Gaelscoil Balbriggan opened after a long
and at times difficult campaign. With the new principal
Clodagh Ní Mhaoilchiaráin in charge, there
is no doubt that the school will be a great success. The
school has 35 pupils starting from junior infants to second
class. This is a day and date that those involved with the
school have been looking forward to and they will celebrate
its opening for some time to come!!!. Gael Scoil web site

RTE
1 Programme.
Just to say, we were very dissapointed that Balbriggan didn't
feature much in the programme " Life without me".
Our Tony was on screen for about 2 seconds, blink and you
missed it. Sorry to all who watched it hoping to see some
of the town. 07.09.06 |
