Surprize For Vincent & Margaret Donnelly

Daniel McCormack 21st Photos
There was great crack in the Bracken Court Hotel on Friday night as it was the venue for Daniel McCormack's 21st. Daniel is currently in DIT studying Bar Management and is off to England in the new year as part of his studies. Maybe when he's in England he might get to go to a few Liverpool matches as he's a big fan of same. He works part time in the hotel and on the night he was joined by his family, friends and work colleagues along with Marian & Andy Breen who were like second parents to him. Daniel would like to thank everyone for the lovely presents, his family for arranging everything and the hotel for all their help. Balbriggan Chamber Gala Ball Features 'In the Directors Chair'
On the evening of Saturday the 3rd of December the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce were extremely proud to welcome their members and their guests to their 2011 Gala Ball. The event was held in the Bracken Court Hotel and guests were greeted by the wonderful traditional tones of harpist Clare Cague, who played throughout the warming mulled wine recpetion. The one hundred and forty guests were treated to a superb Gala meal prepared by Head chef Andrew Dillon and his team. The Master of ceremonies for the evening Zoe Nelson guided the guests through the various events of the Ball with the highlight being a professional session called 'In the directors chair'. In this event Aonghus McAnally interviewed Mr Barry Cassin, recalling his varied and successful career on stage, in theatre and in film media. There was a standing ovation for Barry as President of the Chamber Joe English presented a bespoke award, hand crafted by local jeweller Mr Tony Murphy. The piece depicted 'Undermilk Wood' which was directed by Barry and classed as one of the highlights of his career. The evening drew to a close with 80's Tribute Band Delorean providing a stunning performance from Freddie Mercury to Men at Work. Christmas Lights Turned On
Well it all happened last night when a very large crowd turned up to see the turning on of the Christmas Lights. Eventually, after three attempts, Josh Ajayi won the prize of turning on the lights he also won an Xbox. There was fabulous street entertainment, fire eaters, juggles, clowns and the Farmers Market were also there selling things festive including free mulled wine. Well done to Balbriggan Town Council, Cathaoirleach Grainne Maguire, Brian Murray, Ray Nugent and all the gang, they certainly pulled out all the stops to make it as magical as possible for the children. Our Tony was on duty to take as many photos as possible and we think he got some great ones and we bring them to you now, with names of course. Balbriggan Community College to increase in size and numbers.
Another exciting phase in Balbriggan Community College’s illustrious history has been announced by the Department of Education.The Community College has received a massive vote of confidence from the Dept of Education in its ability to cater for the educational needs of Balbriggan and its environs with news that additional accommodation is to be provided for an extra 430 pupils.  The additional numbers will bring the student population up to approximately 1,000 pupils.more

Balbriggan Chamber Of Commerce Official Opening
Thursday the 17th was a momentous day for the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce as they officially opened their office door to their members and local business community for the first time. There was an excited and extremely positive atmosphere as the Cathaoirleach Cllr Grannie Maguire arrived to official along with the Chamber President Mr Joe English. Members of the executive committee and approximately forty Chamber members looked on with pride as the official ribbon was cut and the activities of the Chamber office were formally launched. ‘This is an extremely proud moment for all of us who have strived to bring this office to fruition over the past two years’ said an obviously delighted Joe English.more

Sinead Delahoyde's Funeral Arrangements
Sinéad Delahoydes funeral arrangements have been finalized.  Sinéad will arrive at St.Peter and Paul's church, Balbriggan, on Wednesday November 23rd at 6:15pm.  Burial will take place in St.Peter and Paul's cemetery on Thursday November 24th -10am mass. Family flowers only, however there will be envelopes at the back of the church for anyone who wishes to make a small donation towards Sinead's funeral fund.  Many thanks to everyone who has assisted with their donations so far and your continued support would be greatly appeciated.22.11.11

SuperValu Balbriggan Win Award
Super Valu Balbriggan recently won the Off License of the year 2010/2011. The competition was very strong this year, with a total of 200 Super Valu’s across Ireland entering this prestigious event. The first round of judging took place in early summer, the judges whittled the 200 down to just 20. The second round commenced in September, with the winner being announced Last Wednesday at the Grand Hotel in Malahide. WELL DONE to Mary Quinlan our Off License Manager and her team for all their hard work and dedication on, not only getting to the final but WINNING it, with the highest score ever achieved by any winner. Mary is a local lady who has worked in Super Valu balbriggan for the past 15 years, and since she took over the Off License she has won this competition on no fewer than two occasions and got to the final every year. This was the 15th year in succession that we have made the final. WW 2 Aerial Photograph of Balbriggan
Today, we bring you a photograph from 1942, via You Tube,  with narration by our Tony, of an army photograph taken during the war. The photograph was taken at about 2pm on the 15th of March 1942 from a height of just over 3000ft. The photograph was supplied to us by PJ Cullen as a 10x8 and using specialist equipment & software we have managed to be able to zoom into this photo with incredible detail. Initially we were going to point out the landmarks with text but this proved very difficult so we decided a narration would be best. At the start, Tony says the photo is from 1947 and it was only after the recording session had ended we realised the photo was from 5 years earlier. Missing 18 Year Old Dog
A family pet has gone missing since 5pm Friday 18th Nov, she is 18 years old and very fragile at the moment. She has a limp as she has a distinct lump on her hip and we are just hoping that if anyone has seen her about the balbriggan area/town to let us know. Ive attached a photo, her name is Lady and she is white on her chest and black on her back mostly. Thanks a lot, The Malone family (chapel crescent). If you see this dog, call 086-8054 275. Update, B.net comes to the rescue again, Emma spotted the dog last night and because it was limping she thought it was hit by a car. Very kindly she brought it to the vet who said she wasn't hit but a possible tumor was the cause of the limp. Emma was told to check B.net and right enough, there was the dogs picture. The Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce annual Gala Ball will take place on Saturday the 3rd of December in the Bracken Court Hotel. This Black tie event proves year on year to be a fantastic social occasion and this year will be no different. The event will start with a mulled wine reception followed by a four course gala menu. The meal will be followed by a celebration of Mr Barry Cassin's career as an actor and director. The celebration will feature a 'fireside' chat between Angus McNally and Barry Cassin where the highlights of Barry's career will be reviewed. Then the Delorean Band plan to wow the gala guests with an 80's spectacular  which will lead the event into the early hours.

Another Break-In At Balbriggan Tidy Towns
Unfortunately the Balbriggan Tidy Towns hut was broken into again last night, Monday 14th November. However due to a previous break-in earlier in the summer the volunteers now store their valuable mowers and mechanical equipment is a new 'secret' location, so the thieves only got away with one strimmer worth 88 euro on this occasion. Members from the local Garda station  examined the crime scene today to screen for evidence that may help to stop these thieves in their tracks. more

Local pilot launches his debut novel. First kill by P.J.Callahan.
P J Callahan, local North Country Dublin resident, former airline captain and flight instructor is launching his debut novel, First Kill, in Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan at 2pm on Saturday 19th of November, in a celebration of the meeting of literature and aviation. First Kill, an adventure novel with a strong aviation background, has been inspired by author P J’s career spanning over 50 years in the aviation industry. A former airline pilot who first took flight at the age of 13, P J’s career has reached some literal and figurative heights, from training young pilots to commanding an executive Boeing 727 for a very important Saudi National. P J’s flying history was diverse and sometimes exciting. more

Late Night Soccer League
Late Night League starts this Friday the 4th of November @ Glebe North Football Club. The League will run for 5 weeks from 9pm-11pm every Friday night with the Final on Friday 2nd December and is open to both male and females of the area. The winners of the final and the 'most sporting team' from both the junior category (12-15) and senior category (16-21) will  be brought by Gardaí to play in the Dublin City Wide Final on Friday 9th September. The winners of the senior category will play against the Garda team. Players are to register at 8.45 this Friday at Glebe North. Min squads of 5, max. of 8. Futsal rules apply. Another Dog Found
We had to check our diary to make sure it wasn't the first day of April, another dog found. We always try to help as we know how upset people can be when they lose their dog. Can we remind everyone to put your phone number on the dogs collar, it would save a lot of time and heartache. Anyway here's the latest email. Hi was just wondering if you could post this pic on the site. This dog was found on Friday night in Hampton Cove. He's very friendly, and had no collar on.

Balbriggan Tidy Towns celebrate their 2011 endeavour award !
Last Friday night the Balbriggan Tidy Towns team left their shovels and wheelbarrows at home and took some time out to celebrate their 2011 Tidy Towns Endervour Award success by meeting up with their friends and supporters for a social evening. There was plenty of banter and chat as the Tidy Towns members reviewed the 2011 activities. They recalled the making and installing of bat boxes and the beautiful tulips and bluebells that popped up all over town in Spring which were planted out in the previous November weather in freezing weather. more

I hosted a Cheerios Childline Breakfast Party in my house on Saturday morning, 15 October 2011.  I would just like to extend my gratitude to Preserved Deli, Around The Pound, Supervalu, Dunnes Stores and Tesco for donating various breakfast treats for the party.  Thanks also to my fantastic friends and family who made generous donations.  The kids had a fantastic morning and we raised a total of €185.00 for a great cause. Balbriggan Town Council held its Annual Awards Night on Thursday 13th October 2011 in the Bracken Court Hotel. Tribute To Thomas McMahon by Timmy O'Callaghan
The "P" the late Thomas Mc.Mahon who died on Sunday and was laid to rest on Tuesday after a beautiful and moving funeral mass in St.Peters. Tom was one of lifes gentlemen and to me a close personal friend. From our days in Hampton Mills with his brother-in law Tom Fanning (The Sailor) he had always kept in touch with me.Even after 41 years since I left my home town of Balbriggan. Known by everyone far and wide it was a pleasure to be in his company in Shelbourne Park on Saturday night to see and hear him discuss with great knowledge the form of the respective greyhounds.Together with the "Skip Gilbert and Danny Cawley and the leading trainers it was a joy to be in his company.Generous and funny he will be terribly missed to very many people and in particular to his family,brothers and sisters. For me a part of my life has been taken away forever. I will miss you Tom.Rest In Peace. Timmy 07.10.11

Balbriggan Harbour --- Suggestion To Keep The Water There Permanently
We all know how beautiful our Harbour is especially when the tide is in. Wouldn't it be great if the water could be kept there all the time. This is actually easier to do than you may think. We haven’t come up with this idea, Neil Roche, the Berthing/Harbourmaster told us that he has seen it done on the Isle of Man. A few weeks back we were in a small welsh town called Aberaeron( Mouth of the river Aeron) and they have something like what we have, an upper and lower harbour and between the two, they have placed a Sluice Gate which traps the water in the upper part of the Harbour when the tide goes out. Speaking to Winnie Guest about this he said it would be great as the boats take a real punishment every time they have to rest on the mud. Today we bring you a few photographs from the welsh town to show what we mean and we show where the Sluice gate would need to go. Stolen Bike --Now Recovered
Hi, I wonder if you could put a message up please.  My son's bike was stolen from our home in Westbrook Drive last night, 21st September, 2011.  It was a trick bike the frame is bright yellow with the name "Big Daddy" on it and the rest of it is black.  The handle bars are quite obviousley spray painted it belongs to my 9 year old son if anyone has any information they can call 0863125228 or if they find it they can drop it into Balbriggan Garda Station.  My son is very upset as this was given to him by his cousin and is quite a unique bike. Emily Dunphy RIP
Hi Tony, I would like to post the sad passing of my granny, Emily Dunphy (nee Switzer) aged 91, Derham Park Balbriggan. Emily passed away on Thursday 15th September 2011 in Beaumont Hospital where she was surrounded by her loving family. The funeral mass was held on Saturday 17th September, followed by burial in St.Peter & Paul's cemetery, Balbriggan. Emily will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. She led a full and happy life and touched the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Our home will never be the same without her. R.I.P. Emily x x x

Balbriggan Garda Station
As part of Community safety Awareness week, Balbriggan Garda Station is opening its doors and inviting all members of our community to an open day at Balbriggan Garda Station on Saturday the 24th of September from 2pm to 5pm.
In attendance will be the Garda Mounted Unit, Garda Dog Unit Garda Water Unit, Garda Traffic Unit and numerous Garda vehicles with many more attractions from An Garda Siochana’s specialist Units all subject to availability on the day. Take a tour of the Station, have your fingerprints taken, view the cells and come along to meet your local Gardaí. Late Night Soccer League
The Community Gardaí will be running one of their regular football tournaments, more commonly known as the “Late Night League” in conjunction with the F.A.I. The tournament will run from 9pm to 11pm on Friday 23rd September at Glebe North football club for boys and girls aged between 13 and 19. The winners of both the junior and senior categories will be brought by Gardaí to the Ireland versus Armenia match on the 11th of October at the Aviva stadium. 17.09.11

After the great success of the Balbriggan Food Festival in August, the live Cookery Demonstrations proved very popular so local lad Stephen Grimes is bringing his ‘Red Chef Cookery Demonstrations’ to his hometown of Balbriggan. On Saturday September  24th from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm Balbriggan Branch of Guide dogs are doing a bag pack in the Dunnes Stores in Hamlet Lane, Balbriggan. Volunteers are wanted to help with the bag pack and we would very much welcome your help for a few hours if you can make it. Balbriggan Pro-Am
For the second consecutive year Balbriggan Golf Club held a Pro-am, the day was a huge success. This event was kindly sponsored by Ace Express Freight whose managing director Philip Tracey is a member of Balbriggan Golf Club.
A field of 44 teams took part in this event, with professional golfers from all over the country participating. The weather in the morning favoured the golfers, in the afternoon the golfers endured a few heavy showers. The winning team consisted of Balbriggan Golf Club’s own Professional Nigel Howley, Club Captain John Scully, his twin brother Tom and the Captain’s son Cian with a winning score of 93 points. Professional golfer Gary Murphy won the professional competition with a great score of 65 (-7) with his team coming in 2nd  place. In third place were three juvenile members from Balbriggan Golf Club, Jake Vickers, Kian Gilbert, Steven Sharpe and club assistant professional Christopher Cullen with a score of 90 points. Balbriggan Achieves Tidy Towns Endeavor Award
The Balbriggan Tidy Towns team are extremely proud of their recent National Tidy Towns 2011 results in which they were awarded an 'Endeavor Award'. Balbriggan achieved 241 marks in this years competition which is 10 more marks than last year. The overall winner Kilkenny achieved 310 marks out of 400 so it this shows just how hard it is to gain marks in this National Competition. An increase in marks is not easily achieved and the Tidy Towns volunteer teams all over the country must demonstrate to the adjudicators steady progress over the whole year in ten categories. more

“Our 18 month old cat Sooty has been missing since the afternoon of Wednesday 31st August 2011.  Sooty is a completely black cat with no other colourings and he is a very nervous cat..  He is both neutered and microchipped, however he was not wearing a collar at the time he went missing. Fingal Adult Education Literacy Service is a free and confidential service for adults who want to improve their reading, writing, spelling and basic maths skills.We are based in Sarsfield House, Mill Street, Balbriggan.  The scheme is co-ordinated by our Adult Literacy Organiser, Paul Carroll. Learners can work in groups or on a one-to-one basis. The groups are small and supportive and learners develop their confidence along with basic education skills.  Tuition is available mornings, afternoons and evenings.more

Balbriggan Community Policing Forum will be holding its third public meeting for 2011 in the Hamilton Hall , Town Hall , Balbriggan on Wednesday 7th Sept  at 7.30pm. Residents of Balbriggan and Balrothery will have an opportunity to come along and bring their issues of crime, disorder and anti social behaviour to the appropriate authorities.  Public meetings are attended by An Garda Siochana, and the Fingal County Council and chaired by the Balbriggan Community Policing Forum.  more

Looking For James Carton, Fisherman, Balbriggan 1875
Here is an email we received the other day.
The Tayleur was an emigrant ship of the famous white star line, which was wrecked on lambay Island in 1854 on its maiden voyage from Liverpool to Australia, with great loss of life. News of the tragedy quickly spread and charitable donations poured in to assist the survivors, many of whom were left destitute as a consequence of the wreck. Some of this charity was channelled through a Dublin committee chaired by Lord Talbot de Malahide (the then owner of Lambay Island), the surplus money from which was used to establish a ‘fund available at once for such shipwrecked strangers as may become future claimants on the generosity of the citizens of Dublin’. It was from this distinctively Irish fund that the Tayleur Fund Medal was inaugurated. more

Balbriggan Food Fest 2011
Balbriggan led off Ireland’s Heritage Week (Sat August 20 to Sun August 28 inclusive) with a fantastically successful Bridgestone FoodFest at Balbriggan Harbour. The Chamber of Commerce-initiated event brought out the citizens of Balbriggan and visitors alike, in huge numbers in a warm and almost entirely sunny period. St. Patrick's Brass and Reed band initiated proceedings with a resounding beat followed by intoxicating tunes  provided by 3dB a local Jazz trio. Balbriggan restaurateurs Deepak Dhand of Indian restaurant Moti Mahal; Karl Rogers of Cafe Deli; Quayside’s Thai Gourmet; Whytes of Stamullen and Ronan of Cates Cafe were among those eventually ‘sold-out’ after long queues. If the Bracken Court had a capacity attendance of over 600 at the 2010 event it can hardly be said that anyone counted to 6,000 at this packed outdoor event of 2011. But there were certainly thousands at the Harbour Foodfest last Sat! Observing the crowds, Keiko of newly opened Céad Míle Café Drogheda Street, regretted she had arrived in town so late. ‘’Where can I sign up for FoodFest 2012’’ she wanted to know!  more

Missing White, Brown & Black Beagle
The dog is missing from the laneway at the back of Hampton Street since Monday evening.  He's a one year old Beagle (white, brown and black). Ardgillan, Balbriggan or Skerries?
Ardgillan is the topic of conversation today, here is an email we received on Friday from Damian Prout, "Hey Tony just logged on the Ardgillan castle web page and it gives the address as Skerries. Why is this??? From the county bridge to Barnageeragh tunnel is all Balbriggan. And if you go all the way up the steep hill towards the castle gates all houses on the right are addressed Balbriggan and all the houses on the left are Skerries." Good question, can anyone answer that. Also, looking north from Ardgillan, the mountains in the distance, are they the Mourne or are they the Cooley mountains. I don't know if you were aware but all these shows were done for various charities or in some cases it would be a benefit night for someone local who may have lost there husband or wife through illness and who may have had young kids to support. We received this email and some brilliant photos from Martin McNamara, "Hi Tony. I was intrigued with your piece on the Hawk-Hovermoth. I took my camera and headed for the walled garden in Ardgillan early on Saturday morning.
I didn't have too long to wait until  I spotted one. They visited three different plants while I was there Phillianthus, Budleia and Lavender. This year's format will be Open-air and Marquee style in the Quay St/ Harbour/ Beech area Balbriggan. Bridgestone (of Good Food Guides fame) are again sponsors. There was a huge 600+attendance in 2010. The Restaurant and Fingal Food-Producers participation details will be announced shortly

Fish & Farmers Market 2nd Birthday
There were great celebrations on the Square on Saturday for the 2nd birthday of the Fish & Farmers Market. Balbriggan Town Council Cathaoirleach, Grainne Maguire was in attendance as Brendan Ryan TD, Councillors, Chamber of Commerce President, Joe English. A mobile farm and face painting proved very popular with the children and lots of business seemed to be going on. FETAC & Fingal Adult Education
A group of students on a FETAC Community Participation Course with Fingal Adult Education Centre in Balbriggan set about looking for a suitable project in the Balbriggan area.  Their goal was to carry out a project that would benefit the community and give them a sense of achievement and an opportunity to learn something new.  Together with their teacher Fiona Kavanagh they identified an area in the town, at the junction of Drogheda Street and Brecan Close, which was badly in need of a facelift. more

Local Cricket Team Take on The Might of Clontarf
North County 5ths played host yesterday to Clontarf 5ths at Inch, Balrothery a game that started in somewhat dreary, humid weather and ended in bright sunshine.  Both teams had a great mix of youth and experience and the match was played in true sporting fashion.  A good crowd gave both teams plenty of support and when I left it was Clontarf with the smiling faces. Children from St Mologa’s NS and Educate Together and other schools will display work on their perceptions of their personal place in and interactions with their town environment. more

Harry Rowan in Glasgow To Return To Balbriggan For Last Time
Here is a message that came in on the Guest Book yesterday, " I came to Balbriggan on holiday many times when I was a young man. From 1960 to 1966, I came with St. Francis Boys Guild where we camped.The first site being at the beach where a bandstand was built, then in a site next to the tower and finally at a site next to the church. I can recall many happy hours in John Dempseys (J.Ds as we christened it )Some of the lads married local girls and settled in Balbriggan. My last visit was in 1990 but sometime in the near future I hope to visit the birthplace of my Grandfather in Belmullet Co/Mayo and if I can make it I will definitely make a point of seeing Balbriggan for the final time. Looking forward to it." Tom & Breege O'Neill With Taoiseach Enda Kenny
Balbriggan locals, Tom and Breege O'Neil, who are both Guide Dogs owners were invited to the 35th Anniversary of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny was also there to officially open the recently redeveloped facility of Guide Dogs National Headquarters and Training Centre in Cork last Monday 13th June. more

Balscadden School Principal Retires

Balbriggan goes Bats !
Balbriggan Tidy Towns team have made exciting progress regarding their 'Bat Box' project. Biodiversity officer Zoe Nelson, is delighted to report that six summer roosting bat boxes have been constructed. Volunteer Phil Curtis constructed the boxes in compliance with advice published by the Bat Conservation Society. Bats require summer roosting located near water so that they can go out after dusk and feed on flying insects. Over the last number of years the reduction in the number of suitable trees has meant the bats are finding it more difficult to find roosting sites where they can snuggle down during the day and rest in groups. These bat boxes will provide luxury accommodation for six colonies of Balbriggan bats. We are keeping the exact location of the boxes a secret so these special and endangered creatures can rest quietly during the day. Cllr. Grainne Maguire Elected Cathaoirleach
We are delighted to announce that the new Cathaoirleach (Lord Mayor) of Balbriggan Town Council is Cllr. Grainne Maguire. She was elected by her fellow Councillors on Tuesday night along with Larry Dunne as Leas Cathaoirleach. Grainne is the daughter of Pat & May McKeon and is well known as a leading actress with Balbriggan Dramatic Society and more recently for her sterling work with the SummerFest. We wish Grainne all the best in her new position. If John, her Husband thinks he hasn't seen much of Grainne the past few months, the next year will probably be as bad. It's a great privilege to be elected Cathaoirleach and we hope everyone gives her and the office the respect they deserve. Aoife Crosson's 21st Party Photos
Well known community activist, Sean Crosson looked proud as punch as he watched his beautiful daughter, Aoife, celebrate her 21st party in The City North Hotel last week. Parents Sean & Breda and her sister Muireann chatted and partied till the early hours. An added treat on the night was an excellent display of Irish Dancing to rival Riverdance by Aoife and her dance pals from DCU. The DCU 'Dance Squad' have won numerous Inter-University competitions 2011 and recently danced as part of the 'Dance Experiment' show in the Helix. A past-pupil of Balscadden and Loreto, Aoife is currently studying Communication Media and Sociology in DCU. Aoife is off to New York for the summer which is great for Aoife but not so great for her sister Muireann, who'll miss her terribly. Aoife would like to thank everyone who came along and for the lovely gifts and especially thanks her parents for all their help in making it such a great night.Our Tony was hired to capture the night and we bring you lots of photos, with names. Here is an email we received the other day, "Can you put this picture on your web, she is a black female lab approx 1.5yrs old found today outside supervalu in Balbriggan.  she is with a couple in Laytown for a few days and then if no owner found drogheda animal rescue will take her. RE. Balbriggan Easter Matches-19th April 2011
Garda Kate Daly Ní Bhroin and Garda David Sheeran liaised with Paul Keogh, FAI development officer for the district in the running of the football tournament, on the 19th of April for youth’s aged between 13-19 years within the town. The tournament was held in Glebe North football club, Balbriggan, between 12pm-4pm. It follows on from the Garda/Fai “Late Night League” which is run in conjunction with local authorities youth groups and Community Garda Policing Units, and aims to provide a safe, fun and healthy social alternative for teenagers. Approximately 120 youths participated on the day.more

Paint Scheme for Balbriggan progressing
Work is progressing nicely on the Balbriggan Paint Scheme which is an initiative between Balbriggan Town Council and the business community, with the support of Dulux Paints, to work together on improving the appearance of buildings in the town centre by creating a co-ordinated colour scheme for the town. Two more shops have been freshly painted in the past few weeks; Eurospar in Drogheda Street and O'Lorcans in Dublin Street with the co-operation of the proprietor, Gerry Andrews.more

Information Regarding This Photo
Many thanks to John Gallen who has given us some valuable information into the background of this photo. The occasion was a reception & presentation to Mr W E Cox, retiring manager of the Northern Bank.  It was I think in the early 50s.  I remember the photograph was in my parents’ possession.  Mr & Mrs Cox, having retired, remained in the town. I think they moved only 2 or 3 doors, to Brecan House on Drogheda st.more

Save Our Soles, Shoes Nailed To Wreck But Why?
We received this interesting mail from Roland, "I took these pics out at the rocks on the headland Ben Head. There was an old wreck wedged between the rocks and people had nailed lots of shoes to it over a period of time. The first pic was taken in August 2004 but in early 2007 it vanished after a big storm. I found some of it in August 2007 near Lowther Lodge beach/harbour with 3 shoes still attached.Perhaps someone out there knows the story behind it?" Balbriggan Golf Club Win The Fingal Junior Foursomes (The Andy Desmond Trophy)
Congratulations to the Juvenile section of Balbriggan Golf Club who were victorious in The Andy Desmond Trophy played at Portmarnock on Tuesday 26th April. On Tuesday 19th April, they defeated The Island GC in the morning and then in the afternoon they overcame the challenge from Balcarrick GC.These tremendous wins put them into the semi final which was played on Tuesday 26th April. They were out in the morning against Forest Little GC where they had a very comfortable win. In the afternoon they faced Malahide GC. They knew that this was going to be a tough match but all the team were brilliant. They won one match on the 18th and the other on the 16th. Heartiest congratulations to the Juvenile team on the great win. It was their first time to win The Andy Desmond Trophy - hopefully more victories to come! Well done lads. Rose Monks Celebrates her 80th in Style
The was a great party in the Milestone at the weekend to celebrate the 80th birthday of Rose Monks, formally Guildea. Rose, originally from Lusk looking stunning on the night and certainly enjoyed herself. Family from all over the world came to share in her big night including her brother Patrick, 92, who came from Baldoyle, her sister Bridget Russell, 90, and her other brother Tommy, 78 who traveled from swords. Sons, David & Kevin, with partners, Karen & Taryn, travelled from Australia as did her Grandaughter Susan and her partner Andrew. Gerry and Amanda Guildea travelled from London. My mother is now 87 years old and the last survivor of her four older siblings. I am the great-grandaughter of James and Catherine (May) Hartford of Dermotstown. I have enclosed a copy of an original letter that has incredibly been saved, dated 1904 addressed to James and Catherine Hartford. As part of the St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations, Balbriggan Town Council hold an Art, Essay and Poetry Competition for local schools and playschools.  
An Cathaoirleach Councillor Frank Snowe and the members of Balbriggan Town Council hosted an awards ceremony in the Town Hall on Thursday evening last, 24th March 2011 for the winning participants. An Cathaoirleach welcomed the children to the Town Hall to collect their prizes and congratulated them on their success in the competition. more

Balrothery Union In Its Heyday
Firstly, it's good to be back after a weeks hols. Secondly, the Guest Book has been updated. Last week we brought you a photograph of The Balrothery Union, which was just the Balbriggan side of Murtagh's of Ballough and we wondered did a photograph exist of the building in its heyday. Low and behold, one arrived in the post, from Orpington in Kent from a person who didn't give us their name. Well, whoever you are, many, many thanks. Thanks for getting back to me. I actually don't have a picture of him. I had to leave him in Lissenhall kennels. If its possible to place the ad without a pic, I found him around Dunnes Stores on 08/03. He is a young (about 9 or 10 months old) chocolate Labrador type. Has a collar but no name on it. He has a microchip but its not registered in anyones name. 14.03.11

Balbriggan Dance Amad to Represent Ireland.
An Cathaoirleach, Frank Snow, dropped in to St. Teresa's School the other night to show his support for local Dance group, "Dance Amad" as they put in some final rehearsals for their trip to Wales to represent Ireland in the 5 Nations International Dance cup 2011. There was great excitement on the night as we took a few photos of the girls and some were even privileged enough to get the wear the Cathaoirleach's Chain. Dog Injures Paw on Broken Bottle
Here is an email we received from Damian Prout, "We thought we’d send in this photo of our little Frankie to warn all dog-walkers and indeed parents of the consequence of litter in the town. Last Sunday morning on our usual walk, Frankie sustained a severe cut to her paw caused by a broken glass bottle, carelessly left behind by someone around the Bremore Castle area, where children frequently use this area for football training.  Although Frankie is on the mend now she did have to undergo a small operation and will be laid up for a few weeks. Local Hero John Mooney
You might be aware that Ireland yesterday defeated England in a cricket World Cup game in India.  Kevin O’Brien created a World Cup record when he smashed his way to a century in only 50 balls and Ireland also created a record for the World Cup by chasing the score of 327 and winning by 3 wickets. Kevin O’Brien was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ but Balrothery man John Mooney played a huge part also by taking 4 England wickets and making 33 runs with the bat including the winning runs. Roy Torrens is the team manager and West Indian Phil Simmons the team coach. It was a wonderful achievement and great to see the ‘underdogs’ coming out on top. They had a themed event this year, in the form of a Masquerade Ball, which was a big success. Guests arrived to a champagne reception at 7.30pm, followed by a sumptuous dinner. Entertainment on the night was provided the very popular 80's band, 'Electric Avenue', which was immediately followed by the very talented DJ, 'James William'. The night was made even more memorable by Ms. Ladonna McCartan’s(City North Hotel) imaginative Venetian theme. The Balbriggan Public Realm Steering Group held a presentation in the Town Hall on Wednesday 23rd February 2011 where their consultants LOCI outlined their draft strategies for short, medium and long term projects to enhance the appearance of Balbriggan town from improved streets to better use of open spaces. The presentation was an opportunity for LOCI to outline their proposals based on the input of the public who attended a workshop held last October. The on going input of the people of Balbriggan into the preparation of this public realm plan is essential for the success of this project. Within a few hours, the owner of the dog saw this post and rang us. The dog is now reunited with its owner. Balbriggan Guide Dogs
All day Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th February an Irish Dancing Feis is been held in Naul G.A.A. Club Co Dublin in aid of the Balbriggan\North County Dublin branch of Guide dogs. The local branch would like to thank Damien O'Shaughnessy and Ann McFadden for their continuing support of Guide dogs in running this Feis year after year for them. Local Phone Shop, Mobile Media Store Wins Award
The annual 3 Sales Awards took place last week, with a selection of sales and retail representatives from the mobile industry across Ireland in attendance. The event was an opportunity to celebrate their successes in 2010 and a great night was had by all at Fire Restaurant, Dawson Street, Dublin. Among the winners on the night was Niall Keady from Mobile Media Store who picked up the award for Independent retailer of the year in Leinster. Balbriggan Chamber President fears Balbriggan Town Centre decline unless Traders and Citizens get fully behind Public Realm Plan.
Balbriggan Chamber President Joe English has stated that unless Balbriggan traders and citizens get fully behind exciting town plans -  in the short and longer term - to refurbish and revitalise 'Oldtown' Balbriggan, the traditional Town Centre will come under additional immediate threat. That threat comes from 1. The current general down-turn in retail business and 2. Additional competition from the imminent opening of the out-of-centre Millfield Superstore.The exciting new plan, known as the Public Realm Plan for 'Oldtown' Balbriggan, is about to go on display at 7pm Wed 23 February in Balbriggan Town Hall. more.
