Train Derailed in 1989
Seeing as it was all trains of late, today we bring you a photo from 1989 when a train derailed in Balbriggan. What makes this photo even better is the fact that the signal box is also in view, it's an awful shame this was demolished without the public being told beforehand. Does anyone know the year it was demolished? Click on the thumbnail to view. 03.02.12 |

Balbriggan, A Charming, Charming Place
Those are the words uttered by Michael Portillo as he got off the train at Balbriggan and we have to agree with him, it really is one of the nicest views in Ireland. Would people agree with that? Has anyone any comments about the show, feel free to share them on our Face Book page or Guest Book. Maybe Gerard Bisette, the lad who spoke to Michael on the train might like to share what happened etc. This YouTube video has proved very popular with over 500 views in about 18 hours. |

Firstly, Thank Crunchy it's February, Secondly, can we thank everyone who contributes through our Face Book page which has almost 1800 "Likes" and nearly 600 talking about us, many thanks. Who remembers this house on the corner of Church/Hampton Street. The first photo shows the house "Laragh" probably in the early '80's and the second photo is probably from the late '80's. Watch BBC, ITV, CH4, CH5 on iPhone & Saorview
Here's an App we have to tell you about, if you have an iPhone and want to watch the English stations, you can for FREE and its legal. It's called "FilmOn" and you can get it through the "App Store" on your phone. We've been using it for several months ago when John Maguire told us and more and more people are using it, especially for Ch5. It lists irish stations but only UTV and BBC NI are there, no RTE yet. Give it a go, you can also use it on your PC but it's best on the iPhone and is probably available for android phones now. On a similar topic, with the turn off of Analog TV in UK and Ireland on the 23rd of October, some people are saying they are going to get the "Saorview". The problem here is that you only get the Irish stations on saorview, our suggestion is that you go for either SKY or UPC. If you go for Saorview, you'll need to get a satellite dish and decoder to get the English stations. Feel free to add to this on our Face Book page. Click on the thumbnail to go to the FilmOn web site. 25.01.12 |

MBNA Fake Web Site
We received an email yesterday from MBNA about our Credit Card and when we clicked on the link we noticed the address at the very top of the page didn't say www.MBNA.ie. The web page looked exaxtly like the genuine one so always have a look at the address bar, at the top of this page reads www.balbriggan.net. This applies to all web sites like AIB, Bank of Ireland etc, so if ever you get an email from one of these banks, it's more than likely a fake and you should not click where they tell you to. Bringing Home The Fish in 1979
Two fabulous photos for you this morning thanks to messes Benton/Curtis. The first photo is of great interest to us as we have never seen the Harbour and Gas works from this angle. Also of interest is the guy walking away from the camera with two large fish in his hands. There were plastic bags in 1979 and what they used to do was bring a ball of string down to the harbour and the string would be threaded through the gills of the fish and it was known as a "Hank of Fish" and it wasn't uncommon to see certain men carrying about 6 stone of fish home. The second photo is also from 1979 and it shows 2 "locals" working on a boat with another enjoying the sun. Click on the thumbnail to view both photos. 17.01.12 |

Bran is Home, Here's the Official Story
Hi Tony, Thank you for highlighting Bran’s story on Balbriggan.net, he is now at home and loving the all the attention he is getting from the family and our neighbours.
Bran had been around the estate for quite a while before we took him in, my Dad couldn’t sleep one night knowing he was outside in the snow so he got up and brought him in. As you know my Dad passed away last year and I will take full responsibility that a licence was not obtained and vet visits not followed up on. My Dad would always have looked after our pets affairs and I shouldn’t have overlooked this. My mother had enough on her plate last year and I should have stepped in there and sorted everything out, I can’t apologise enough that this happened.more

The story of Bran-
Bran was strayed by his previous owners in Hampton cove in Balbriggan. Flan, Ronan’s dad who has since sadly passed away took bran into the Kiernan family home were he has been loved and looked after for almost 2 years. Last Thursday the dog warden from Aston pound took Bran from the estate as he had got out of the house and was on the street. The Kiernan’s, worried about the whereabouts of their dog contacted Ashton pound and were told if they produced a dog licence and paid the fine they could have him back. They went to Ashton pound and produced a licence and the cash to pay the fine but they were told they could not have Bran back as they had reports that he is not their dog. Since last Thursday the Kiernan’s have been up to Ashton pound 3 times to try and get Bran back but on each occasion they have been refused. Bran has been cared for and lived in the Kiernan’s family home for almost two years.more |

Today, we bring you two Benton/Curtis photos from 1984, the first being some more wind surfers and if you identify them all we'll give you € 100.00 and the second photo shows a rugby match on the beach which apparently had to be abandoned half way through because the tide came in earlier than expected. Bridge Street Photo
Here is part of a great Benton/Curtis photograph and speaking to Ralph Richardson yesterday he suggested we show this part of the photo and see if we can identify as many as possible. He thinks he can spot the Bulldog McGarry, Chigga kenny and Luke Healy, Spanner Brannigan, Witch Gilsenan and the Gilly Gilbert to name but a few. So, using the numbers, see who name the most and we'll give the first person to name everyone (or the most) a Balbriggan Mug, feck the expense, we'll take the hit. You can enter this competition using our Face Book Page or the Guest Book HERE. Click on the thumbnail to view this photo which we think is from 1972. 09.01.12

Funny Christmas Photos
Christmas time is great for photos of family and friends and even with pets with silly hats or coats. We have two poms, Holly & Millie and this year they received a christmas present of a festive coat. They refused to go out on a walk with their coats on in case the other dogs would laugh at them but they were willing to wear them around the house and we got a few snaps of them. We also got a photo of Mr Healy senior after a big meal and a few drinks. Have you any "funny Christmas Photos" that you'd like to see on the web. Email them to us "news at balbriggan.net" Click on the thumbnail to see our photos. 28.12.11 |

Part 2 of Des & Marie Byrne Trip to Balbriggan
Last Friday we brought you a 1992 video made by well known Dublin Jeweller, Des Byrne. His sister, Mary Lyons emigrated to Australia in 1974 and Des made this video to bring to Mary who used to live at Fancourt. Last weeks video has proved very popular with over 700 views in one week. In this final episode, Des & Marie travel to find where Mary lived and then they find the grave of Keith Lyons who died aged 2 who we presume was Mary's son. By coincidence, we have a photo of Noel Lyons from 1974 Here. We believe last weeks video had a big impact on a person living in Balbriggan and they were looking forward to seeing todays video. Have you any Balbriggan video? We can transfer it to DVD FREE if you allow us even show some of it on the Balbriggan web site. Give us a call on 086-8054 275 for more details. Balbriggan Pioneers From 1976

We can identify Martin & Maeve Carey but we've no idea who the others are. Click on the thumbnail to see this photo, 07.12.11 |

Balbriggan Chamber Gala Ball Features 'In the Directors Chair'
On the evening of Saturday the 3rd of December the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce were extremely proud to welcome their members and their guests to their 2011 Gala Ball. The event was held in the Bracken Court Hotel and guests were greeted by the wonderful traditional tones of harpist Clare Cague, who played throughout the warming mulled wine recpetion. The one hundred and forty guests were treated to a superb Gala meal prepared by Head chef Andrew Dillon and his team. The Master of ceremonies for the evening Zoe Nelson guided the guests through the various events of the Ball with the highlight being a professional session called 'In the directors chair'. In this event Aonghus McAnally interviewed Mr Barry Cassin, recalling his varied and successful career on stage, in theatre and in film media. There was a standing ovation for Barry as President of the Chamber Joe English presented a bespoke award, hand crafted by local jeweller Mr Tony Murphy. The piece depicted 'Undermilk Wood' which was directed by Barry and classed as one of the highlights of his career. The evening drew to a close with 80's Tribute Band Delorean providing a stunning performance from Freddie Mercury to Men at Work. The Chamber President closed the festivities by wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a successful 2012.Click on the thumbnail to see the photos with names. 05.12.11 |

Christmas Lights Turned On
Well it all happened last night when a very large crowd turned up to see the turning on of the Christmas Lights. Eventually, after three attempts, Josh Ajayi won the prize of turning on the lights he also won an Xbox. There was fabulous street entertainment, fire eaters, juggles, clowns and the Farmers Market were also there selling things festive including free mulled wine. Well done to Balbriggan Town Council, Cathaoirleach Grainne Maguire, Brian Murray, Ray Nugent and all the gang, they certainly pulled out all the stops to make it as magical as possible for the children. Our Tony was on duty to take as many photos as possible and we think he got some great ones and we bring them to you now, with names of course. If you see your photo and you'd like to get it printed, contact us here and we'll email it to you at print quality FREE so you can either print it yourself or put it on a memory stick and bring it to your local photo shop. Well done to all involved, don't forget the Christmas Festival continues over the weekend on the Square. A reminder that the Square is closed to traffic till Monday Morning. 1992 Video of Balbriggan
Here is a video that was given to us several years back to transfer onto DVD. The story is, Mary Lyons and her husband used to live in Balbriggan at Fancourt before emigrating to Australia. In 1992, her brother, Des Byrne, a Jeweller from Bachelors Walk, made a "This is Your Life" video to send to her. The part of the video that interests us is when they travelled to Balbriggan to show Mary what the town looked like in 1992. We know May's husband, Noel is still alive and living in Melbourne but sadly Mamie passed away in 1997. If you have any Balbriggan video, we'll transfer it to DVD for FREE if you allow us to show some of it on the Balbriggan web site. Click on the thumbnail to watch 10 minutes of 1992 Balbriggan. 02.12.11 |

Balbriggan Table Tennis & Naul Golf Society

Balbriggan Table Tennis Club used to play in what is now a derelict building beside St. Georges Church. We've no idea as to when the photo was taken, maybe the late 1940's. The other photos are from 2004, Naul Golf Society but here we have no names but we are assured there are"locals" in there. Another Great Aerial Photograph in HD
Today we bring you another aerial photograph courtesy of Niall Gallen. We've no idea when the photo was taken but we suspect it was again from the 1950's. This time the plane isn't as high as the other aerials and he was roughly just above St. Georges Church so we get a great view of Cumisky's Coal yard, Gallens Mills and the Train Station. Thanks for all the emails, you certainly seem to like this way of showing these great photos, over 200 views a day. Don't forget, it's in HD so click 1080p and then click the "Full Screen" logo. To avoid the video stuttering, when the video starts, click pause for a minute or so to let your computer download the information, you'll see a grey bar move to the right. You really do need to see this photo "Full Screen" so give it a try. Click on the thumbnail to start todays video. 30.11.11 |

Parrot Spotted in Balrothery
Niall from The Mobile Media Shop on Drogheda street sent us in this photo of a beautiful Parrot in his back garden last Friday. It looks a beautiful bird and we just hope it survives against the natives birds in Balrothery who have a bit of a reputation. Balbriggan birds are much more friendlier and less jealous of other colourful birds so lets hope he heads north for his own safety. Who's a pretty Boy then?Update. A Mrs Christina CROWE (not joking) rang us this morning to say the Parrot is hers, his name is Mad Max. If you see him, ring the missing pets hotline 086-8054 275 anytime. Thanks. |

1947 Aerial Photograph of Balbriggan in HD
Today we bring you a great aerial photograph thanks to Colin O'Riordan of Knocknagin Road. The confusion with regard to which year it is arises from the fact that we have 3 series of aerial photos of the town, 1942, 1947 and about 1955. Whereas the other aerial are taken from over the sea, this one is from the north west looking back at the town giving us a different perspective. We've created this in HD (so click where it says 360p and change it to 1080p and then click the "Full Screen" icon), so if your computer and your broadband are fast enough you should be able to view it full screen. If its jerky, your pc or braodand is not fast enough. Dont forget, you can pause the video if you want to study a certain part of the photo. We hope you enjoy todays video, click on the thumbnail to view. 25.11.2011 |

Two great photographs for you this windy morning in Balbriggan. We can see Eamonn Maguire who is recovering from an illness and we wish him well, we also see Vincent Donnelly and we think we see Sean Daly. Can you help us with the others. With regard the recent aerial photographs, we believe there has been some discussions as to what year they were taken. The photograph we brought you on the 10th of this month is not from 1947 but from the mid 1950's and the photograph from the 22nd of this month is definitely from 1942. We've more aerial to bring you and we are working on them at the moment. Apologies for the errors, we've so many aerial at this stage, it gets confusing. WW 2 Aerial Photograph of Balbriggan
Today, we bring you a photograph from 1942, via You Tube, with narration by our Tony, of an army photograph taken during the war. The photograph was taken at about 2pm on the 15th of March 1942 from a height of just over 3000ft. The photograph was supplied to us by PJ Cullen as a 10x8 and using specialist equipment & software we have managed to be able to zoom into this photo with incredible detail. Initially we were going to point out the landmarks with text but this proved very difficult so we decided a narration would be best. At the start, Tony says the photo is from 1947 and it was only after the recording session had ended we realised the photo was from 5 years earlier. This You Tube video is just under 10 minutes long, we recommend you watch it full screen in HD providing your computer and broadband connection can cope. Feel free to let us know if you spot anything of interest or if you'd like us to zoom in on a certain part of the photo. It's 086-8054 275 or news at balbriggan.net if you need to contact us. . Click on the thumbnail to view this classic WW2 photo.22.11.2011. Correction, Retford house is mentioned where it should have been Kincora House. |

Terrier Racing in Balbriggan in the 1960's
A few weeks back, we posed the question to see if anyone remembered dog racing in Balbriggan. We thought it was a joke but the other day Vincent Donnelly contacted us to say it was true and that he was involved in the "Terrier Racing" and that he had some programs of the races. We called up to Vincent and he told us he printed the race card every week and looked after the starting "contraption" in his house until it was required every Saturday night. It was serious business with many bookies there. Vincent also gave us a copy of the Fingal Independent from 2008 where Hubert Murphy explains how it worked. Missing 18 Year Old Dog
A family pet has gone missing since 5pm Friday 18th Nov, she is 18 years old and very fragile at the moment. She has a limp as she has a distinct lump on her hip and we are just hoping that if anyone has seen her about the balbriggan area/town to let us know. Ive attached a photo, her name is Lady and she is white on her chest and black on her back mostly. Thanks a lot, The Malone family (chapel crescent). If you see this dog, call 086-8054 275. Update, B.net comes to the rescue again, Emma spotted the dog last night and because it was limping she thought it was hit by a car. Very kindly she brought it to the vet who said she wasn't hit but a possible tumor was the cause of the limp. Emma was told to check B.net and right enough, there was the dogs picture. Emma rang the hot line this morning and was put in touch with Rachel, the dog owner. Another happy ending on Balbriggan.net, thanks to everyone who helped. |

Strand Street & Church Street Skerries in HD
Our Joe recently sent us some Skerries photos from the early 1900's and our technical department have been working on them for the past few days. Using specialist equipment and expensive software we have been able to "Zoom in" on these photographs and retain the quality so you can see things you may never have seen or noticed before. Who remembers Derham's on Strand Street or "Farrells" (At least it looks like Farrells) on Church Street. We've added some music as played by our Tony and if we get a good reaction to this we will start working on some of the Balbriggan photos from the same era. We know we have a large number of people in Skerries who check out B.net daily so today is your day. Click on the thumbnail and as you'll see at the start of the video, you need to select 1080p and then click on the icon to view it Full Screen. 17.11.11 |

Another Break-In At Balbriggan Tidy Towns
Unfortunately the Balbriggan Tidy Towns hut was broken into again last night, Monday 14th November. However due to a previous break-in earlier in the summer the volunteers now store their valuable mowers and mechanical equipment is a new 'secret' location, so the thieves only got away with one strimmer worth 88 euro on this occasion. Members from the local Garda station examined the crime scene today to screen for evidence that may help to stop these thieves in their tracks. more

Paramotoring Over Balbriggan
For those of you who don't know what this is, quite simply it's a parachute with a motor. Wait till you see this, we spotted it some weeks back but it's getting very little hits so lets give it a bit of B.net publicity and see it's hits soar. The video is a bit on the long side but well worth watching the first 5 or so minutes. At one point when he's over the Lighthouse, his feet can be seen dangling into view and it made our stomach turn. Most unusual and well worth seeing. Click on the thumbnail to view. 11.11.11 |

Charity Concert from 1971 & Dog Racing Behind Church
Who remembers the Dublin Lyons Club Charity Concerts in the Savoy Cinema. In 1971, Brendan Grace, Tony Kenny and others took part in the concert here. Do you have any memories of these concerts? Our second question is about Dog racing behind Ss. Peter & Paul's Church. We believe this was a big event in the late 60's and they even had a contraption whereby someone would turn a large wheel which pulled a dummy hare. Rico Orange's dog apparently won lots of races and we are told hundreds would be there from all over Dublin and beyond. Is this true or is someone pulling our leg. Your memories welcome. Murder In Balbriggan
Here is a short film we came across on YouTube that was filmed in Balbriggan entitled "Copper Plus". It starts off in Balbriggan Train Station with an assassin with a high power rifle and he has in his sights, a young man down by the Harbour. It's excellently filmed, edited and acted by persons unknown to us, "Directed / Edited / camera and acting by Dan Curran. Asst. Camera / acting by Gary Kenny. Acting by Andrew McCelland. This short film was shot on a Sony Z1 and edited using Final Cut". It hasn't had many hits, only 20 as of today so lets see what happens by putting a link on B.net does. Local pilot launches his debut novel. First kill by P.J.Callahan.
P J Callahan, local North Country Dublin resident, former airline captain and flight instructor is launching his debut novel, First Kill, in Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan at 2pm on Saturday 19th of November, in a celebration of the meeting of literature and aviation. First Kill, an adventure novel with a strong aviation background, has been inspired by author P J’s career spanning over 50 years in the aviation industry. A former airline pilot who first took flight at the age of 13, P J’s career has reached some literal and figurative heights, from training young pilots to commanding an executive Boeing 727 for a very important Saudi National. P J’s flying history was diverse and sometimes exciting. more |

Silt Removal At Harbour Entrance
Thanks for all the phone calls to say work was going on down at the Harbour. Apparently, the last time it was done was in 1996 but this time they are only removing the sand/silt from the entrance to the Harbour and not actually in the Harbour. We believe 150 truck loads of sand will be removed over the coming days. Someone suggested the sand could me mixed with salt and used to grit the roads when the need arises. We had to check our diary to make sure it wasn't the first day of April, another dog found. We always try to help as we know how upset people can be when they lose their dog. Can we remind everyone to put your phone number on the dogs collar, it would save a lot of time and heartache. Anyway here's the latest email. He's all white except for the black patch on his eye. If you own him, or know who does, please contact 0872834237. |

Keep All Pets Indoors Tonight
Can we remind all pet owners to keep their pets indoors tonight as they can become very frightened by the fireworks. A dog from Balbriggan got so frightened by bangers the other day that she burrowed under a fence and was eventually found in Laytown several hours later, just imagine how petrified she was to travel that distance. We hope everyone enjoys tonight, especially the young kids, stay safe and maybe keep an eye on elderly neighbours. Also, here is a photograph we took back in 2007 and when we checked it on the computer later, we could see a witch on a broomstick near the library, click on the thumbnail to see what we mean. 21.10.11 |

Schools of the town, St Malogas & Balbriggan Educate Together, were also involved and to show their perception of Balbriggan, they created paintings, drawings and artwork of places like the Martello Tower to show how they would like to see them in the future. This is now on display in the Millfield Shopping Centre until the 4th November. Click on the thumbnail to view some photos from the display. 30.10.11 |

Last Friday night the Balbriggan Tidy Towns team left their shovels and wheelbarrows at home and took some time out to celebrate their 2011 Tidy Towns Endervour Award success by meeting up with their friends and supporters for a social evening. Balbriggan Community College Under 17 & Under 19 Unbro Schools Cup, Match Reports.
In a blustery Bremore, Balbriggan Community College under 17 soccer team opened their Umbro Junior campaign with a 3-1 victory over Colaiste na hInse Laytown. The game did not start off to well for the Balbriggan men. Just before kick- off they lost their centre half Michael Dunne through injury, he was replaced by Carl Sower who had an excellent game. This looked like having a huge impact on the game as inside the first two minutes Laytown scored from a corner. The ball was whipped in from the right and their centre forward out jumped everybody to head home at the back post. Balbriggan playing against the strong wind in the first had a mountain to climb.more

Tribute To Thomas McMahon by Timmy O'Callaghan
The "P" the late Thomas Mc.Mahon who died on Sunday and was laid to rest on Tuesday after a beautiful and moving funeral mass in St.Peters. Tom was one of lifes gentlemen and to me a close personal friend. From our days in Hampton Mills with his brother-in law Tom Fanning (The Sailor) he had always kept in touch with me.Even after 41 years since I left my home town of Balbriggan. Known by everyone far and wide it was a pleasure to be in his company in Shelbourne Park on Saturday night to see and hear him discuss with great knowledge the form of the respective greyhounds.Together with the "Skip Gilbert and Danny Cawley and the leading trainers it was a joy to be in his company.Generous and funny he will be terribly missed to very many people and in particular to his family, brothers and sisters. For me a part of my life has been taken away forever. I will miss you Tom.Rest In Peace. Timmy 07.10.11 |

Balbriggan Harbour --- Suggestion To Keep The Water There Permanently
We all know how beautiful our Harbour is especially when the tide is in. Wouldn't it be great if the water could be kept there all the time. This is actually easier to do than you may think. We haven’t come up with this idea, Neil Roche, the Berthing/Harbourmaster told us that he has seen it done on the Isle of Man. A few weeks back we were in a small welsh town called Aberaeron( Mouth of the river Aeron) and they have something like what we have, an upper and lower harbour and between the two, they have placed a Sluice Gate which traps the water in the upper part of the Harbour when the tide goes out. Speaking to Winnie Guest about this he said it would be great as the boats take a real punishment every time they have to rest on the mud. Today we bring you a few photographs from the welsh town to show what we mean and we show where the Sluice gate would need to go. We know money is tight at the moment, but maybe it's something that can be considered at a later date. Your views welcome on this topic. Click on the thunbnail to see the photographs. 06.10.11 |

Dog Fouling --- Has It Improved
We've all seen the posters about the town to remind dog owners to clean up after their dog but has it made a difference? Not a bit, according to one of our surfers, "It's a bad as ever especially near the beach and Harbour". That's the view that was expressed to us at the Public Realm Plan Launch and we are looking for your views. If the posters aren't working, what can be done? A ban on all dogs from the beach area? That's what they've done in some parts of America. We saw two ladies walking the ring road with a dog and they let the dog relieve itself on the grass verge as they chatted and then walked off without cleaning it up. Why do people do that, its so easy to bring nappy bags or disposal bags and pick it up and put it in a bin. We here love our dogs and we'd hate if they banned dogs from the beach area, so come on, please all dog owners, clean up after your dog and keep Balbriggan Beautiful. Your views are very welcome and for those of you not on Face Book, we'll put any suggestions from our Face book page on this page. Talkback Thames rang us looking for information and images of Balbriggan, the Railway Station and Smyco. We got in touch with our Joe (Curtis) who put together a CD for the program. On of the items on the CD is "Balbriggan (from Thom's Almanac and General Directory 1862: County Dublin Directory)" which makes for fascinating reading. We've retyped the first page and we bring it to you today. We'll keep you posted as to when the program will be broadcast. Click on the thumbnail to learn more about 1862 Balbriggan. 28.09.11 |

Happy 40th Linda Richardson
Last Saturday, in the Bracken Court Hotel, saw Linda Richardson celebrate her 40th birthday party with family and friends. Linda, originally from Clonard street, now lives in Gormanston with Stephen and kids Ed & Will. Our Tony was there early in order to photograph the kids and we believe a large crowd turned up later and a great night was had by all. Are you having a party?, hire a professional photographer for an hour, call Tony Healy on 086-8054 275 anytime, makes an ideal gift too.
