Goldsmith Jewellers Robbery
This well known Jewellers on Drogheda Street was, for the second time in recent weeks, robbed. It happen last Friday about 5pm, the robbers reversed down Chapel Street and stopped outside the shop and using a sledge hammer, busted the door open and then attacking the staff with hammers. They smashed all the cabinets and literally took everything. It was a terrifying experience for Anthony and the staff. The gang were subsequently spotted on the M1 by an off-duty Garda who contacted her colleagues who stopped the gang in a Taxi and recovered the jewellery. Anthony would like to take this opportunity to complement the Gardi for their sterling work and he is totally overwhelmed by all the messages of support he has received by text and phone. We hope Anthony and the staff get over this episode soon. We believe other businesses have been targeted recently but luckily no one has been seriously hurt. Bernard Carroll of Drogheda Street Update
Hi Tony, You mentioned about Bryan Carroll looking for details on his Grandfather and when I seen his initial request on balbriggan.net I was thrilled as this man turns out to be my father's first cousin (Joseph Barnett) and I contacted him immediately by email. My Dad is over the moon about finding these relatives. I should have let you know I contacted him sorry about that. I gave him copies of information about the Carroll family over the last 2 centuries as I have done my family's ansestory .  I got stuck with Bryan's father, Joseph Carroll, as he left Balbriggan in the 1940's and was thought to have gone to Australia he never got in contact with his sister Mary Ellen Barnett (my granny) since he left.  So we are all elated to know that Bryan is one of six children and my Dad is one of twelve (two of which have since passed) but to think they were only in England all this time and we never knew.  Only for the website we might have never found out about these relatives.  Thanks for all your help and keep up the great work!!! Enrica Walsh (nee Barnett) Galway

MARITIME MUSEUM MARKS ‘WORLD BIODIVERSITY IN WATER DAY’ WITH ‘WHALE & DOLPHIN EXHIBITION’ AT BALBRIGGAN TOURIST OFFICE
Balbriggan Maritime Museum has opened a new public display in Balbriggan Tourist Office on Quay Street near Balbriggan Harbour. On show is a Whale and Dolphin Exhibition, bones, models and general information to celebrate the biodiversity of sea mammals off the coast. This follows the previous popular ‘Cannon Balls Exhibition’.
Appropriately, ‘Water & Biodiversity’ is the theme of the 2013 International Day for Biological Diversity which falls on Wednesday, 22nd May.
Balbriggan Maritime Museum volunteers have assembled bones from many sea animals, such as a vertebra from a Fin Whale, the second largest whale in the world growing to 88 ft in length. No wonder this bone is too heavy for one person to lift! The Humpback Whale model, in real life, is about half the length of a Fin Whale and weighs only 40 tonnes! Even so, Humpback Whales, which are seen in the Irish Sea, would be too big to fit into Balbriggan Courthouse!

Balbriggan Tidy Towns now working with all three Secondary schools!
The Balbriggan Tidy Towns team have once again enhanced their secondary schools 'Contact' project.
Last week various classes in Ardgillan College undertook daily clean-ups in the residential areas surrounding their school. The tidy Towns team helped by providing gloves, litter pickers and high visibility jackets. Many residents commented positively about the daily cleanups and commented 'its great to see the young people volunteering and looking after the local environment'.
On Monday 29th April the Loreto College hosted a member of the Tidy Towns team Zoe Nelson, who gave a class on volunteering and stewardship. The class are completing their CSPE project and had undertaken a fund raising event for the Tidy Towns cause.more

Another Sparrow Hawk Attack
Phil, can you believe that the other day I was standing in the kitchen with the door open having a cup of Tea and enjoying watching the birds on my feeders. All of a sudden, I saw a starling leave the feeder at speed and straight into a bush only to be followed by a Sparrow Hawk. At first I thought it was a Wood Pigeon but soon realised is was a Hawk. Then the Hawk and the Starling fell to the ground and just as he was about to plunge his talons into the chest of the starling, I let out a scream and ran into the garden and with that the Sparrow Hawk left the scene and the Starling went back into the bush. I checked the bush about 30 seconds later to see was the Starling ok and with that he flew off to live another day. Even if I had my camera in my hand, I wouldn't have captured the attack as it was all over in a matter of seconds. So well done again to have got the photos you got. Did I do the right thing interfering with nature, probably not but it was just a gut reaction not wanting to see a Starling killed. We're still very busy with photographic work, two weddings this weekend and lots of product photography to do. Here is another photo Phil has sent us, does anyone know who they are? Brendan got the surprise of his life on Saturday night as he headed out to celebrate a supposed party for his friends, Ann and Joe McGee. The party was in fact for Brendan and what a night it turned out to be. Accompanied by his wife Margaret and children Patrick & Máiréad, Brendan spent most of the night on the dance floor playing a inflatable guitar to the likes of Queen. It was then the turn of Pauline Clarkin and Mary Flood, dressed as a Dublin and a Meath supporter to narrate a very funny poem all about the birthday boy. We believe it was a very late night and it truly was a great night which Brendan enjoyed immensely. Brendan & Margaret would like to thank everyone who came along and a special thanks to The Bracken Court Hotel, Damien Reilly for the cake and to Tony Healy for the magnificent photos (They didn't say the latter, we just thought we'd put that in, cheeky). Click on the thumbnail to see who was at the party. If you see your photo and would like a copy, email us and we'll send it to you by email for FREE. Thanks Brendan and Margaret for being a pleasure to deal with. 21.04.13

Balbriggan Bin Tag Thief Video.
What you are about to see is a video, recorded at 1.23am  Friday morning. Watch the thief enter the estate in his car and on his way out of the estate, our cameras catch him robbing two bin tags, presumably after robbing numerous other tags further up the estate. The first tag is easy to remove as the bin is facing the road, the second is a bit more difficult because the way the bin is facing, he has to drive into the drive way, then reverse a little before he opens his car door to grab the tag. He doesn’t go near the tag on the next house as their bin is not at the kerb. As he is about to leave the estate, we pause the video and suggest the car make, we could be wrong but someone out there will know what type of car it is. We have this footage on DVD and are dropping it into An Garda Siochana later today. From this video we learn the following, How it’s done, the time and how to make it more difficult for him by keeping the bin away from the kerb. We say “Him” but it could be a “Her”. Your views welcome on this footage, it’s a minute long but worth watching a few times. Click on the thumbnail to view and select “full screen” for the best quality.

Balbriggan Bin Tag Thief Caught On Video
We have received video footage of a Bin Tag thief at work last Friday morning. Our technical department are currently enhancing the video quality and we hope to bring it to you Monday morning. Bin Tag robbery has become a major problem of late with the tags on sale for € 5 each. The video footage has really surprised us but we wont say anything else until we publish the enhanced video on Monday morning. We will be handing over the video to An Garda Síochána when we're happy with the quality. Let us know if it's a problem in your area. Fingers crossed that our guys can work wonders with the video. 13.04.13.

Breakaway Festival Photo
We had a huge reaction to Phil Curtis's Sparrow Hawk photo with 1785 people viewing the post in one day. We rang Phil to congratulate him on the stunning photos. Today we see the weather forecast is for the biting cold to be gone by the weekend, we'll be glad to see the back of that cold spell. Anyway, back to photos and this morning we bring you another photo courtesy of Dave McGuffin. We recognise Paul Collins in the photo but no idea who the other guy is. Looking For Evelyn Kearns
Hi, I am trying to trace the whereabouts of an old friend of mine that I haven't seen for years. Evelyn Kearns lived on Bath Road but I believe moved to England. I see a death notice for Ella Kearns back in 2009 and think that this may have been her mum. Any information would be greatly appreciated. If you can help Vincent, email us here, news at balbriggan.net. 10.04.13

St. Peter & Paul's School Reunion 2007

This morning we bring you another photo courtesy of Patsy Mcgarrigle and it's a school reunion of St. Peter and Pauls school on the 4th October 2007.Click on the thumbnail to enlarge this photo. 10.04.13

Parenting Plus Course
A Parenting Plus Course for the Early Years (age 0-7) is being held in Balbriggan Library. We've numbered everyone to see if we can identify them. Thanks Patricia, more during the week. Click on the thumbnail to view. 09.04.13

Sparrow Hawk Attack In Balbriggan Captured by Phil Curtis
Just wait till you see the 3 photos Phil sent us. It's a bit gruesome as Phil says but it is nature and the Hawk has to feed. These attacks happen in seconds which make them very difficult to capture and capture pin sharp using a high shutter speed as Phil did. If you are a bit squeamish, don't look at the photos. Here is Phil's Email, Hi Tony, I took some photos last week end of a Sparrow Hawk attacking a Starling the photos were taken in the back garden. I did not send them to you because they seem a bit gruesome (Nature is Gruesome) I sent them to Birdwatch Ireland Tolka Branch latest sightings panel on left as suggested  by my brother Joe, I was talking to Martin McNamara he thought Ah! send them to Tony he`s sure you  would like to see them. Like Pontius Pilate I wash my hands of them. Best Regards, Phil. 09.04.13

Balbriggan Library Opening Hours Cut
We at Balbriggan.net have just heard that Fingal County councillors are today going to vote on proposals to cut the opening hours of the Balbriggan Library. Although we have not seen the draft of the proposals we are informed by sources close to the council that Balbriggan Library will open only until 5pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays while opening from 2pm until 8.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday. This cut in hours  will seriously effect students who use the library to study for exams and inhibit the library's ability to continue providing courses for the elderly and unemployed. Many of our populatin have been forced, by austerity measures, to forego their broadband connections. They now rely on the library service to compile CV's or seek work. If you feel strong enough about this, contact your local Fingal County Councillor and ask why Balbriggan is being hit harder than other towns in this regard. 096.04.13

Jakki (Jackie Roy) In The Milestone This Saturday
You will probably know Jackie Roy here in the town. Jackie is an Artist and has also been along time around singing and performing with many bands over the years. Her daughter Leslie Roy is a very successful song writer and international music artist.Jackie has fronted many local bands in the North Dublin and Dublin City area and after a few years off the circuit to focus on her artist work, I am delighted to inform you that she is making a return singing debut appearing in the Milestone Inn Lounge in Balbriggan on Saturday 6th April 2013. Again with the emphasis on supporting local talent it would be fantastic to see her get local support. She will be singing many of the Pop classics from the 1980's.All her friends and supporters wish her the very best wishes and success. Thanks again and keep the Brigg Flag flying, Joe Costello.

Watch Out, Beadle's About
A correction re the Ploughing Championships photo we brought you last week. We said they took place near where Millfield Shopping Centre is now but Vincent Donnelly has clarified that it was further out than that, up near Hagen's Cross. Yesterday was a glorious sunny day but cool and this morning looks equally nice. Thanks to everyone who supplied names for the communion photo, we hope to add the names under the photo shortly. Dave McGuffin has supplied us with this great photo of ITV presenter, Jeremy Beadle in the town. It was probably during one of the festivals, we've no idea of the year so feel free to suggest same and who is beside Jeremy. Thanks a million Dave, more from him tomorrow. It was great to see them all and they had great time here in Ireland. We will be sad to see them go, but hopefully in the near future we will try and organise another Mcgee Clan gathering and we will have all the family members together. Beach Information Sign Removed
We suppose it was only a matter of time before the Council would remove the vandalised beach information sign. Some months back it was totally obliterated with spray paint by some mindless idiot and now we all have to suffer the consequences. It looked great when it was first erected but unfortunately it only takes one gobsh**e to ruin it for everyone. Your comments welcome on our face book page or by email. Click on the thumbnail to view how it once looked and how it looks today. 02.04.13

New Balbriggan Sightseeing Bus
Balbriggan got some great news last week when it was announced that the company who operate the Dublin City Sightseeing bus tours are about to include Balbriggan. The company operates all over the UK and Europe and their spokesman, Paul Stuckey said that over the past few years, tourists have asked on many occasions do they include Balbriggan? According to Mr Stuckey, "the demand is there and we'll give it a go in the year of The Gathering". We have one bus dedicated to Balbriggan and during a test run last September ( See Photo) we have worked out the route of most interest. The Audio guide that will be available on the bus will include information on "The Sack of Balbriggan", all about Smyco and Queen Victoria, the history of the Lighthouse and harbour to name but a few. This all starts on July the 1st and Mr Stuckey says they are looking forward to a busy year and hopefully it will continue next year. Shay Woodhead
Upon hearing the sad news of the passing of Shay Shay, Trish McCombe in Australia sent us this email. "Hi Tony, My father Paddy McComb grew up in Balbriggan on High Street and I regularly check out your website. I was very sorry to hear of the death of Shay Shay Woodhead as my father was friends with Shay Woodhead as a lad, and I’m guessing this was Shay Shay’s grandfather. I’m enclosing a photo of the older Shay and my father taken during a visit in August 2006. It will be four years since my father passed away on 2 April (2009). My prayers are with the family. I have also attached another photo I took during the same visit of my uncle, Christy McComb, Michael McGovern, Eileen McGovern and my father Paddy. Trish McComb Perth, Western Australia." Sean Carey (14) Telephone Goodbye Video
We just have to bring you this video, Sean Carey is 15 next month and his passion in life is music, so much so that he writes all his own songs. Some months back he recorded this song, "Telephone Goodbye" with the help of Eric Sharpe, Mark McInerney and Fran McDermott of “The Great Escape” who did a fabulous job on it. All it needed was a video, so yesterday, in the freezing cold, Sean and his uncle Tony headed down to the Harbour where all good videos are recorded to get some footage. We think it turned out great with lots of shots of Balbriggan. Don’t forget, Sean is only 14 and we think he has a great future in music as he continues to develop his voice and guitar playing. Watch out for a cameo appearance of his proud uncle. Click on the thumbnail, comments welcome on our Face Book page. 30.03.13

Balbriggan Hosts 1948 Ploughing Championships
A few years after the war, Balbriggan had the distinction of hosting the Ploughing Championships. It took place near where Millfield is now and by all accounts it was a great success apart from one incident. There were little or no tractors at that time so horses were used to pull the ploughs. The horses were stabled about Balbriggan and many were kept down by the harbour where the new apartments are now. Somehow a man feeding the horses got a kick in the head from one of them and subsequently died. His names was Mr Reid. Do any of our more senior viewers remember this? Vincent Donnelly has very kindly supplied us with this great photo. We've also zoomed in on the crowd in the background just in case anyone spots a "Brigger" amongst them. Chapel Street/Harry Reynolds Traffic Lights
The traffic lanes layout here has certainly set our Face Book page alight. We have to be honest, we avoid that junction like the plague as you could be stuck there for ages and then if you go onto Chapel Street, it’s too narrow and with the parked cars it’s like an obstacle course. Hopefully that will be widened in the future. But back to the junction, if you’re coming from Millfield and you approach the junction, the right lane is for straight on and turning right. The left lane is for turning left only. From our perspective, all the junction needs are the painted arrows on the road surface. We decided to video the junction from our car, first time we turned right and the second time we went straight on, no problems but you can see that arrows on the road are needed and are probably scheduled to be done very shortly. Community Alert Scheme for Balscadden District:
The Balscadden Community will hold a Public Meeting in Balscadden National School at 8PM on Thurs 21/3/13, to launch the Balscadden District Community Alert scheme.  Community Alert (or, more recently, Community Text-Alert) is a rapidly-expanding national crime-prevention programme, which is supported by Muintir na Tíre, the Gardaí and the Department of Justice. A professionally-managed texting system with good protocols and the sharing of general crime-prevention information, is promoted for the benefit of all households who elect to join the scheme. The community, with the assistance of its local leaders, will actively work with the Gardai to minimise crime and to make citizens of all ages safer in their homes. The scheme can assist community solidarity generally; has a get-to-know-your-neighbours element and will seek to focus on the additional security needs of the elderly and infirm. Senior Balbriggan Gardai and Muintir na Tíre representatives will be present. Show your support by your attendance.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The parade this year was a great success and the weather was on our side, no rain just a bit cool. There was a huge crowd which stretched from Bath Road where the parade started all the way to the junction of Dublin street and Market Green. Alison Comyn was the compare on the square where the viewing stand was for local Councillors, including the Cathaoirleach, Larry Dunne. After the presentations the crown were treated to some amazing songs by last years, The Voice , Sharon Gaynor. Well done to Brian Murray and his team for organising the Parade so well.  Professional photographer was hired to cover the event and we bring you his photos now. If you see your photo and would like a copy to print, email us and let us know what photo and we’ll email it to you at print quality, FREE, courtesy of Balbriggan Town Council. Ardgillan's Got Talent
On Thursday 7th March, talent was on display at the annual ‘Ardgillan’s Got Talent’ show.  And talent there really was! From Irish Dancing, to classical flute playing, singing and hip hop dancing, there is no doubt that Talent in Ardgillan just keeps getting bigger and better every year. This year judges were the wonderful Eurovision winner Ms Linda Martin, talent scout Mr Murphy and deputy principal Ms Nuala Ni Mhúrchú. It must have been a very tough decision on the night as the acts provided a very high standard. Singers on the night were Sarah who sang a beautiful rendition of ‘True Colours, ’ Chelsea  who sang a fabulous version of ‘Hallelujah,’ Nossimo and Ore did a beautiful variation of  ‘Wonder,’ Anais did a brilliant adaptation of ’ Ready or Not?’ and cousins Darragh and Reece did their fantastic version of ‘O What a Night!’ Jac brought the film ‘Les Miserables’ to life on the night when he sang Eponine’s ‘On My Own,’ Aisha performed Lady GaGa’s ‘You and I,’more

Lighthouse Survives High Waves
Yesterday morning was bitterly cold, strong easterly wind and high tide all of which made for spectacular waves crashing over the Lighthouse. We took a few shots from the Viaduct but it was so cold we decided to go down to the Harbour. Here it was very difficult to get any photos as the spray from the waves would get on the lens and cause a scum so we didn't hang around there too long. Anyway, we got a few good shots and we bring them to you now, click on the thumbnail to view. 12.03.13

Jack Benton 1990's Video of Balbriggan
Shortly before Jack Benton sadly passed away, he gave us a video tape to transfer to DVD. It was recorded in about 1995 and in the footage we bring you today, Jack recorded the factory at Seabanks and then the shelters near the Bandstand. Unfortunately, as you'll see, the shelters were vandalised with graffiti and broken bottles and even fires lit in them. Maybe it's me, but I was brought up to respect my own property but have even more respect for the property of others, I have never defaced any property in my life and just can't for the life of me understand why people do this, is it me? It's no wonder the Council had to demolish these shelters but maybe they could have bricked them up instead. From the shelters near the Bandstand, Jack then visited Station street and we bring you, then and now shots, during the 5 minute video. To finish off the video we bring you a L.S Lowry drawing from 1970 of Station Street when he paid a visit here six years before he died. We all remember the song, Matchstalk men and Matchstalk cats & dogs which is what we have as the backing track. Click on the thumbnail to watch the 5 minute video. 11.03.12
Martin McNamara Phone Images
Back to normality now after a week dominated by the shelters, thank god common sense has prevailed. Can we tell those of you abroad, it's bitterly cold presently in Balbriggan with a lazy east wind, (goes through you, rather than around you) and snow forecast and not looking good for next weekend. Anyway, Martin McNamara has sent us a few great images taken on his mobile phone which proves you don't need a high tech camera to get stunning images. Modern smart phones give stunning quality, high resolution photos which seem to get better and better. Click on the thumbnail to see Martin's stunning (there's that word again) images. 11.03.12

Shelters Saved
Following on from my Motion to Fingal County Council  and support from the Town Councillors and local Fingal County Councillors regarding the demolition of the two shelters on the front beach we have now been advised that this will not go ahead.  The support and work done on the ground by Balbriggan.net, Balbriggan.info, Tidy Towns, Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society and indeed the people of Balbriggan who came out to voice their anger and opinions was overwhelming and it just goes to show that with everyone working together we can make a difference. more

Our Shelters - Our Heritage - Our Call To FCC
The webcast of the Balbriggan Town Council meeting which discussed the shelters issue is available to view HERE, it makes for interesting viewing. We sincerely thank the Councillors for their work in particular Grainne & Monica. If there is one thing that would diffuse the anger out there over this issue is if FCC announced that it wouldn't demolish the shelters without extensive consultation with The Town Council, The Historical Society and even the Chamber of Commerce, that would allow time for a reasonable debate to take place. John Gallen and Zoe Nelson have sent us in some food for thought worth reading. Click on the thumbnail to view. 07.03.13

Report From FCC Re Shelters
At a sitting of Balbriggan Town Council last night, Fingal County Council presented a report into the shelters. Presently the web cast is archiving and can't be watched yet but here is the link to it to check later, http://www.balbriggan.public-i.tv/core/   Here is the report, we think they should get rid of the enbankment and not the shelters." Report:
Discussions have taken place over the last two years with stakeholders and the Balbriggan/Swords Operational Unit with regard to the future of the lifeguard station and shop at Balbriggan Beach.
Both structures, which are only operational for 3 months every year, regularly attract anti-social behaviour including vandalism and graffiti. On several occasions over the years, while lifeguards have been on duty, youths have gathered on the embankment behind both shelters and have thrown stones and other missiles at the lifeguards. In addition given that both structures are flat-roofed, they can be easily accessed from the embankment resulting in a serious health and safety risk."more
Our Presentation To FCC
We have put together a 5 page presentation and sent it to FCC. Whoever made this decision has certainly galvanised the people of Balbriggan to speak with one voice. One of the team here has put together a PDF with photos and text and it should leave the Council in no doubt as to the anger that's out there. Please click on the thumbnail to download the PDF. Comments welcome by email or through our Face Book page. 04.03.12

Protest Photo  A Great Success
Between 150 and 200 concerned residents turned up today to let Fingal County Council know of their annoyance at the decision to demolish our heritage without consultation. Cllr. Grainne Maguire was joined by Cllr. Monica Harford, Cllr May McKeon, Zoe Nelson, Brian Howley, Anthony Murphy, Gerald & Ann  Gallen, Tony Healy and Ian Lawless to name a few. It was a great turnout  with people still arriving after the photo was taken. People commented that it is the first time the people of Balbriggan have got together like this to voice their concern to FCC.  It’s now hoped that the Council with review their decision and start of process of consultation with the people of Balbriggan. Cllr. Grainne Maguire will let us know what happens at their Council Meeting on Tuesday night and we believe a meeting will take place in the hotel at 8pm and we’ll bring you more on that also. Again, thank you very much for turning up today. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge the photo 03.03.12

PRESS RELEASE

BALBRIGGAN & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
2nd March 2013

SAVE BALBRIGGAN’S HERITAGE!

Balbriggan & District Historical Society have given their support to the campaign to ensure that the shelters at Balbriggan beach are retained and enhanced.
Chairman Brian Howley commented:
‘Indeed we find it incredible that notice of this should only appear by word of mouth and that there would be such blatant disregard of the feelings and opinions of the stakeholders involved including the local people and the Historical Society.
This has too often been the case in the past with the loss of  some beautiful buildings and other landmarks  – e.g. the diving board area......and we did believe that a new era of consultation and inclusion had been evident with the recent Railway Street Initiative.
We encourage all of our members to attend the protest photograph at the shelter area of Balbriggan beach tomorrow Sunday 3rd March at 2.45PM.

SOS -Save Our Shelters - The Update
Sunday's day of action, 2.45pm at the Shelters is gathering momentum. The North County Leader were down today to talk to the locals. Cllr. Grainne Maguire explained the situation to the paper that there has been no consultation with the Town Council or residents and this is not acceptable. However a report is been brought to the Council on Tuesday night which should explain the council reasons. In Balbriggan they demolish the Diving Board whereas in Skerries the spend hundreds of thousands on "The Captain's" said Tony Healy and pointed out that Balbriggan deserves some positive discrimination to right the wrong of demolishing Balbriggan's heritage. Ian Lawless pointed out that Health & safety will probably mentioned but at least give us a chance to respond before demolishing the buildings. Zoe Nelson has done sterling work in the background emailing newspapers etc for this cause and we thank her sincerely. Also there was Joe Kelly of Balbriggan.info and they are also looking for a level playing pitch for Balbriggan people. Don't forget our petition, email, sos@balbriggan.net and even just put your name and say something like, "Please FCC, listen to the residents." We need posters for Sunday, so start thinking of making them now. We hope as many as possible turn up and those of you abroad, ring you family back home and encourage them to turn up. Thanks. School Exchange Visit by Students of Balbriggan Community College to St.Wendel, Germany
Students of Balbriggan Community College have been busy preparing for a visit to St. Wendel, Germany on a school exchange visit. Thirteen students accompanied by two teachers are heading away on Monday 4th March 2013 for a four day visit.  Leas Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Councillor Peadar O’Kelly together with the Town Manager Ide DeBairtiseil called to Balbriggan Community College on Thursday last to wish the students well on their journey. Balbriggan Town Council signed a partnership arrangement with the town of St. Wendel, Saarland in 2008 which has resulted in various exchanges between both towns.  Leas Cathaoirelach of the Town Council, Councillor Peadar O’Kelly stated “The school exchange is a key part of the Town Councils vision for the partnership and Balbriggan Town Council are delighted to be able to support these exchanges which will forge stronger links between both towns. This will be the third visit to St. Wendel by students from Balbriggan Community College. I have no doubt the students will be wonderful ambassadors for Balbriggan and I wish them well on their visit and hope they make lasting friendships in St. Wendel”.

Balbriggan sends an S.O.S - Save Our Shelters !

Fingal Development Plan 2011-2017 states its function is "to protect and conserve the natural and built heritage of significance within the County." So the people of Balbriggan were stunned this week when they learned of the councils plans to demolish two charming shelters that have graced the shores of Balbriggan town beach for decades. They can be clearly seen here in this half a century old black and white photograph supplied by local photographer, Joe Curtis. The buildings were originally changing rooms for bathers and some years back one was converted into a small seasonal shop and the other into a life-guard hut.more

Save Our Shelters – Our Intentions
We hope as many people as possible turn up this Sunday at 2.45pm for a photo of everyone at the shelters to be taken at 3pm sharp. Can we ask anyone who is a member of a club or organisation to see if they can get their fellow members to come along and show support for Balbriggan. We are going to make a PDF presentation and possibly a slide show to show the buildings we’ve lost to the demolition squad and to show how Skerries has fared better and give it to FCC on DVD or as a PDF. Another suggestion is Banners/Posters to display when we take the photograph on Sunday. Please please please also send an email to sos@balbriggan.net expressing your concern so we can include in the presentation. Not everyone is on Face Book or the web so please spread the word about Sunday to your family and friends. Those of you Briggers abroad, we are depending on you for support also, email us at the above address let FCC know your feelings.  We look forward to seeing lots of you there at 2.45pm this Sunday at the Shelters. Thank you. 27.02.13

Save Our Shelters This Sunday 2.45pm
Ian Lawless has just told us that a prominent Balbriggan Businessman has donated € 400.00 to have the shelters painted. Because of the anger out there over the proposed demolition of the Lifeguard Shelter and Beach Shop, a photo shoot will take place at the shelters this Sunday at 2.45pm and the photo taken at 3pm sharp. We then want to send the photo to FCC as a PDF with messages from people as to why they should leave our shelters alone. To send an email to be included in the PDF, email you comments to sos@balbriggan.net. Please keep all correspondences civil and no bad language. Spread the word, This Sunday at 2.45 and the photo taken at 3pm.

It's back to the Benton/Curtis collection for this photo. It was taken in August 1998 and in is Paddy Walsh, Mrs. Walsh, Monica Marry and Willie White. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge this photo. 27.02.13
J Canning 1924
We've received no information about yesterdays photo, W. Corcoran. Anyway, todays photo is of Jack Canning. We think he lived next to the Combined Clubs building on Dublin Street. If you know anything about Jack, where he worked etc, please let us know either by phone, 086-8054 275 or by email or through our Face Book page. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge this photo. 27.02.13
W. Corcoran 1924
Here is a great photo given to us by Vincent Donnelly. It's an O'Dwyers team photo from 1924 when they won the Co. Dublin Intermediate League and the photo needs work to repair it. We're going to try find out as much as we can about each of the players. Today we bring you the photo of W. Corcoran, who was he, where did he live and who's related to him today. We'll bring you another player tomorrow. Other names from the photo include, Murry, Kennedy, Lawless, Canning and Knight. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge this photo. 26.02.13
What Can We Do To Stop The Demolition???
One thing we think we can do is create an email petition to FCC to let them know that we don't want them to demolish The Lifeguard Building and Beach Shop. We're going to contact Cllr. Grainne Maguire and ask her what email address we could all send an email to express our annoyance. We would ask that the emails are not rude or offensive, that get us nowhere. If we go down the email petition route, we can get everyone around the world to get involved. Has anyone else any suggestions? 26.02.13
Lifeguard & Beach Shop To Be Demolished
First it was the Diving Board, then the Signal Box and the list goes on. Cllr. Grainne Maguire has been onto us to tell us that FCC have decided to demolish these two landmark buildings. This wouldn't happen in Skerries or Malahide. Here is Cllr. Grainne's letter, "Well is history repeating itself? No consultation about knocking down the diving board, the shelters in the bandstand, the boat house left to fall to ruins and even the office of Public works took the dome of the lighthouse.... what’s next? The diving board was demolished and nothing put in its place, the boat house left to fall to ruins and no money pumped into restore it to its former glory. The dome on the lighthouse has been promised but we are still waiting. The shelters were demolished in the band stand park and it is just left with walls falling down and not even a flower planted."more
Keane's Bus Bar Skerries
We brought you an old photo of Skerries last Thursday and we asked if anyone could help with identifying the year, the car and the name of what's now Keans Bus Bar. Well, one of the team has the eye of an eagle (and the resemblance doesn't end there) and he thinks he can make out the name. We think it says "Henry Curtis, Late of The Dolphin, Dublin". We think the reference to the Dolphin is the Dolphin Hotel in Dublin. So now we're asking, especially anyone in Skerries, can they find out when Keane's Bus Bar was known as Henry Curtis and who was Henry Curtis. This also reminds us of the time we identified the business beside the Hotel in Balbriggan. Thomas Carey Solicitor was there in about 1900, can anyone verify that using Thoms or Porters Directory. Click on the thumbnail and see if you agree with us as to the name of the pub and also the Solicitor's office in Balbriggan.. 25.02.13
Sam In Balbriggan

STOP STOLEN MOBILE
Here is an item Louise Butler of the Policing Forum has sent us. It's to stop the robbery of mobile phones. You need to find your phones IMEI number. All you need to do is enter *#06# on your phone and your IMEI appears on screen. Here is the email Louise sent us.
IMEI
(International Mobile Station Equipment Identity)
Step 1.    Entering   *#06#  into the keypad on most phones.   IMEI no. will show on screen  (CAN BE FOUND  BEHIND  BATTERY ALSO)
Step 2.    WRITE IT down!!!  If a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "blacklist" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless on that network and sometimes other networks too, whether or not the phone's SIM is changed. The IMEI  no can  identifying the device at a Garda Station if the mobile has been handed in or found. Don’t hesitate DO IT NOW!!!   Kind Regards, Louise

Balbriggan Maritime Museum
Please find attached a press release from Balbriggan Maritime Museum about a most unusual catch by local fishermen - four 28 pound cannon balls over 200 years old.  Having been meticulously cleaned by the fishermen, they are now on display in Balbriggan Tourist Office, in the absence of a proper Maritime Museum, as yet!  Every month (until we have secured a proper museum building), the Balbriggan Maritime Museum Committee will rotate a sample of the many maritime related artefacts currently in storage, using the limited space kindly made available by Balbriggan Tourist Office on Quay Street. We hope you can tell the public about this unusual and unique monthly rotating exhibition, and so help us build a case for a proper maritime museum facility in Fingal. Millrace Pub
According to our Face Book page, The Millrace Pub on Dublin Street (Formally John D's) is closed. Here is what one person said, "sad to see the Millrace Balbriggan locked up due to nama rejecting Brian Mooneys offer to take full control of the pub and look after the local people in the town." We have to say it's a lovely Pub and would be an awful shame if it closed permanently. Click on the thumbnail to see photos our Tony Took back in 2009 of inside. 25.01.13

Another Photo From Billy
We still haven't found out who Billy from Bath Road is but we have got 3 names for yesterdays photo, Charlie Hughes, Tommy Grogan and Johnny Killarney. We also can see a group of Nun's on the beach in the background. The one person we can identify in this photo is Gus Thompson, number 6. Who the others are we've no idea. In recent weeks we brought you news that Balbriggan Tidy Towns (BTT)have launched a new initiative to work with local secondary schools. This week it was the turn of Balbriggan Community College to host the Tidy Towns PRO officer Zoe Nelson.
The third year class who have chosen to liaise with the Tidy Towns team are called 'Allen' and are named after the beautiful Shannon lake. They sent an invite to BTT and developed a welcoming committee and they also prepared questions which would help them with their completion of their CSPE (Community, Social and Political Eduction) project.more

When Bertie Came To Town
Severe frost last night, don't forget to feed the birds in this weather. Here is a photo from a batch we hope to bring you over the coming days. It was Sept. 2006 and our man was hired by Fianna Fail to cover the event, the day Bertie came to Balbriggan. In the light of what subsequently happened the economy a year or so after this visit, we don't think he'd get the same welcome now. Anyway, some love him some don't and we'll leave it at that. What interests us is identifying those in the photographs. BTW, operation Transformation is on tonight and tomorrow and our Tony maybe in show as he was working for RTE that day at Newbridge House, so keep an eye out. Anyway, click on the thumbnail to enlarge this photo. 22.01.13

Panto has finished, thank god, if anyone from Balbriggan went, did you enjoy it?. Back to normal hopefully by the end of this week. We got one of the boys names from Friday's photo, Paul White thanks to a relation in Devon. Today, we bring you a great photo courtesy of Mary White and it shows Balbriggan Fire Brigade being presented with their first fire engine and tender in the mid 1940's. Prior to that the tender was pulled by a County Council lorry driven by Pat Gleeson. We've numbered the officers so lets see if we get their names before Tuesday morning. Charity Football Match
A charity fundraiser is to take place on Sunday the 3rd of February at 3pm in Glebe North Football Club, Balbriggan where a team of Gardaí from the Balbriggan District will take on a team of ‘Local Balbriggan Legends’.
Gardaí based in the Balbriggan District from uniform, detective, drugs and community policing units will play a team of representatives from local business, teachers, sports and community groups from Balbriggan town.
All Proceeds from the match and players sponsorship will go to the Tania McCabe foundation.
The Tania McCabe Foundation was set up in memory of Tania who died after giving birth to twins, one of the twins Zach also died. Adam the surviving twin spent a considerable amount of time, 3 months, in the care of the Special Care Baby Unit in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and Unit 8 Holles St Maternity Hospital in Dublin. The funds raised will go towards buying equipment for these units as a "Thank You" for helping Adam and other premature babies.
Tania McCabe served as a Garda Sergeant in Santry Garda Station and her husband Aidan McCabe is a Sergeant in the Balbriggan District.
With the money donated to date the McCabe family most recently purchased two Giraffe OmniBed incubators and presented one to both our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and Unit 8 Holles St Maternity Hospital, Dublin.
The community are all invited on the day to support all players in the match. Donations can be made throughout the match or individual players can be sponsored.

It's a very wet morning in Balbriggan with maybe snow expected later. Can we remind you that if you sent us in items for the web site we'll get to it early next week when the Panto finishes. This morning we bring you a great photo courtesy of Roger Turner in Sheffield. Roger came to Balbriggan every summer just as his father and grandfather did in the 1930's and you can read Rogers story of Balbriggan by clicking HERE. We're not sure if we brought you this photo before but we wonder can we identify the lads. We think it was the late 1950's and it was taken near the Martello Tower.
