RESULTS OF BALBRIGGAN'S GOT TALENT!
Saturday 27th June was probably one of the hottest days of the year but it didn't deter all the talented people from Balbriggan and surrounding areas from attending Balbriggan's Got Talent auditions.  Starting off slowly, the crowds soon built up and our four judges had their hands full with dance acts, singers, comedians and musicians - a total of 80 acts turned up so it was not an easy job for the judges to whittle this down to a mere 10 for the final - so they decided on putting through 12 acts as the talent was just too good!

Balbriggan Fish & Farmers Market Photographs
As promised earlier on today, we are now bringing you a 4 minute slide show which was commissioned by Balbriggan Town Council. We hope it gets across how successful the first Market proved to be. From what we hear, vendors could have sold twice as much if they known how popular the day was going to be and the great weather contributed greatly to create a carnival atmosphere. We are also going to put this slide show on YouTube which is something we have not wanted to do as any we have seen there are terrible, due to the size and quality. We will give it a go and see how it turns out. By the way, the piano music you will hear in the slide show is played by our Jack Benton. Click on the thumbnail to download and play the slide show. Don't forget to use the space bar to pause, and the arrow keys to go back or forward. We hope you enjoy it.

Balscadden Tractor Run
Sunday’s Tractor Run proved to be a huge success with close on 80 tractors taking part over the 40Km run. On their return to the village, following judging, the Gary Martin Memorial Trophy was presented to local man Peter Casey for his immaculately presented 995 David Brown machine over 30 years old. Then all adjourned to McCormack’s lounge for refreshments and where a raffle and auction for a range of  donated prizes took place. The event was a huge financial success for the organisers, and while sufficient funds were raised to allow essential Church refurbishment work to commence more needs to be done. With this in mind organisers invite any former parishioners with fond memories of Balscadden – you may have went to school there, made your first communion, confirmation, or even got married in the church, to consider making a contribution to this worthy cause, and help preserve this beautiful old church for future generations. Donations can be made to: Balscadden Church Fund,  Balbriggan Credit Union, Dublin Street,  Balbriggan. Click on the thumbnail to see photos by Jack Benton & Joe Curtis. 08.06.09

Recent Balbriggan Photos
Here are a few shots we took over the past month down at the Harbour. It really is a beautiful place when the weather is fine. Our man was telling us that he cycled through Balbriggan in the early 80's and that he wasn't impressed by the town and it was only years later that he was dating a local girl that discovered the Harbour. We are so blessed to have such an amenity. We have seen friends absolutely gob smacked by the views of the Beach, Harbour, Viaduct, Martello Tower and the Mourne Mountains. Click on the thumbnail and enjoy. 16.05.09
1940's Photograph

We think it's a great photo and it's great to know who the people are. The person who donated this photo wishes to remail anonymous. 15.05.09

Two items for you today, the first is a close up of some of the crowd during a speech by Eamon De Valera in Balbriggan. We think we can see Lily Canning among others. If you recognise anyone, please let us know. The second item we have, is taken from a scrap book compiled by Michael J Heeney from 1912 to 1950's that was about to be dumped but rescued by Martin Hughes. It relates to the Sack of Balbriggan and the subsequent trial that took place. The cuttings are very small so we have enlarged them to make it easier to read. Click on the thumbnail to view. 01.05.09

We received 2 photos taken on the same day and the other shows the huge crowd on the square and we'll bring you that very shortly. Thanks to the person who sent it in. 01.05.09

We can identify Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, George Best amongst others. Has anyone any idea if this was taken in Balbriggan. Click to enlarge the photo. 15.03.09

Corcoran Looking for help
We received the following email recently, Hi, I'm just tracing back family history. I've found my great great grandmother, Jane Lynch (nee Corcoran), came from balbriggan. I found her on the 1911 census. Her parents were John Corcoran of Clonard Street and Margaret Coleman of Mill Street. Johns father was called William Corcoran. I'm just wondering if you would have any other information that would help me or even if possible pictures??!!If not, is there any other site that i could find information on??   By the way, your site is absolutely brilliant. Regards, Lorraine. If anyone can help Lorraine, email us here and we'll pass on the email. 15.03.09

Pre 1907 Balbriggan Postcard
This is a well known "James Valentine" Postcard photograph of Balbriggan. The date on the postcard is 1907 so the photo had to be prior to that. In fact, we have just noticed that the "David Brangan Photograph" taken from a similar angle is even older. The reason for this photo today is that Jack Kennedy claimed to know all the people who are in the photograph. He may or may not be correct but it's good to get some suggestion of who the people are. Click the thumbnail to see both sides of the postcard. 15.03.09

Ken Griffin Taking It Easy In Galway
Don't you just hate when "Friends" who do this, send compromising photos to Balbriggan's No.1 web site. Well, we at B.net will not be part of such conduct but seeing that we know Ken, we've decided to publish. It shows Ken “Doc” Griffin having a nap and Hoe Guildea with Wayne Hammond at the Skipper Expo in Galway Bay Hotel. Thanks John for the photos. Click to see the photos.

Hampton Celtic AFC
Has anyone ever heard of this team? We presume it's a soccer team but we have no idea when they existed. Association Football Club is what we think AFC stands for, we wonder was if it was a forerunner to Glebe North FC. If anyone can enlighten, please do. Essie & Bridget Richardson
We received the following email from David (not sure if surname is for publication) "You guys wanted more information on the below women.  Well it's Esther and Bridget Richardson, part of the big richardson family in Clonard street. Twin sisters,  Bridget is the one making the face for the photo, she lived in Tara Court where many people from the place will tell you she was a pure legend.  Loved by the community young and old.  Everyone called her nana rooney, and speaking for many a people she often comes up in all our conversations in the pub with some of the antics she got up to, like pouring bread soda in your tea all in good humour, absolute legend and dually missed by everyone in tara court." Many thanks for sharing that with us David. 09.03.09

Glebe's Lights get switched on
Leinster Senior League Club Glebe North officially switched on the floodlights on their main pitch last night, with a massive turnout by invited guests and club members. Mr Jack Reid, the last founder member of the club, carried out the switching on. Chairman Anto Byrne thanked everyone for attending this historic night for the club and was delighted with the massive turnout. In conjunction with the lights been turned on, the main event of the night was the match between double winning champions Bohemians and Glebe North. With proceeds from the match going to the Martin Finnegan Supports Club, the teams were led onto the Market Green pitch by the Black Raven pipe band and with a crowd in excess of 1000 the atmosphere was magic. In the end the League of Ireland team Bohemians were too strong for the Glebe Team and with a 7-0 score line at the end it was still a historic night for the club. Glebe North would like to thank the Martin Finnegan's Supporters Club, our Ladies Committee, First Team Manager Liam Kelly and all who supported this wonderful night. Please check their website www.glebenorthfc.ie for more Friday night matches under lights. Click on the thumbnail to see all the photos. 19.02.09

Blizzard hits Balbriggan!
Well not quite, it had potential, but it just wasn’t sticking. Dublin and the rest of the country have had lots of snow over the past 10 days, but Balbriggan, zilch, zippo. Apparently, all along the coast is the same. It was strange during the week, the main street looked very normal except for the odd car that you would see pass by, covered in snow, obviously coming from Dublin or somewhere more inland. We took theses photos for those of you abroad. We hope you enjoy them. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge.08.02.09

Believe us when we tell you it was difficult to stand still due to the strong winds. Click on the thumbnail to download 7 mb. You will be asked if you trust the publisher, just click yes. We hope you enjoy Balbriggan Harbour Feb. 2009. 07.02.09

Sean Daly and Pat Dowling
One of the team bumped into Sean and Pat this evening. Sean is well known to us but it was our first time to be introduced to Pat. A great conversation developed between the 3 guys. Sean had our man in fits of laughter when the discussion turned to the Sack of Balbriggan and our man asked Sean if he remembered it and he replied, "I ran away before the real trouble started". Brilliant. We must ask Sean if we can join him on the boat during a fishing trip when the weather improves. Thanks guys, we really enjoyed the crack. We've just realised that Pat is a Dowling, see 4 news items below, Richard Dowling, we wonder is there a relationship here. Recession Hits B.net
Things have become so quiet here that we had to check out our hosting company, 1&1 in London to see how many hits we had yesterday. Luckily we had 564 hits and 87 people had downloaded the Sean Farrell 1947 photo in the first 8 hours, so things aren't as quiet as we thought. The Guest Book has become very quiet compared to last year, we know most visitors would have signed by now but feel free to use the Guest Book to comment on photos, make suggestions and constructive criticism is always welcome. Do you know someone who has great memories of Balbriggan and would be willing to record them, contact us and we'll arrange everything. Click on the thumbnail to view how many visited us yesterday. Balbriggan Summer Festival Gig in O'Sheas.
A few lads got together to put on a fund raiser for the new Balbriggan Summer Fest happening this summer. O'Sheas was the venue and the powers that be managed to convince a few locals to put together a bit of a band for the night! WOW!
OK, Eric Campbell on guitar and vocals, Eric Sharpe on lead guitar, JJ Walls on bass, Mark McInerney on keyboards and Jimmy Brennan at the back on the drums. Set included, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Carly Simon, Wings, and my highlight, AC/DC!! Fantastic. But remember why these people got together, to fire us up to support our Festival this year. To eveyone who did so much, names not mentioned for fear forgetting someone, thanks a million. We are all looking forward to the Duck Race! Colin Whelan.25.01.09

1947 School Photo and B.net new Offices
Firstly, a friend has suggested that if we let people know the new address of B.net, we may get even more "Classic Photos". So, in case you didnt know, our office is at 10 Hampton Green, Balbriggan. We now have the names for this photo.
Our sincere thanks to Vincent Donnelly and others, who wish to remain nameless for doing the detective work and finding out the names of those in this photo. We even know where the photograph was taken. Apparently Ernie & Albert Evans used to come to Balbriggan and stayed on Clonard Street opposite Pat Baxter (The Huckey)Butchers in Mickey Costellos. Robert Costello lived in the area and got to know the Evans's, John's father and uncle, Ernie and Albert. Shiela Reynolds must have gotten to know the lads, and when the Mickey Costello died, Ernie and his son, John stayed with Sheila Reynolds on Drogheda Street. John Evans grandmother was an Andrews who came from Ballyboughal, a few miles from Balbriggan. Click on the thumbnail for more info.

Emily Hand RIP
It is with great sadness that we bring the news that Emily (Emmie) Hand has passed away. She was 82 and she died this morning in her home on Hampton Street. She always gave us a big wave from across the street and as a neighbour, our Jack Benton and Chris were very good to her since her husband died many years ago. We offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends. Click on the thumbnail to see photos that Jack Benton took on her 80th surprise birthday party. 29.12.08

The Sea Scouts "The Assumpta"
Originally called the "Mary Anne Blounte" this boat was renamed The Assaumpta and was used for training the Sea Scouts. This is a great photo supplied to us by Vincent Donnelly who also worked on the "refit" of the boat. It was specially designed to cut through waves rather than go over them. Vincent has supplied lots of names in this photo so click on it and enjoy. The boat was later renemed "The Larry J" and went to Howth in about 1954. Many thanks Vincent for this great shot. 29.12.08

Colin Whelan has come across this article in a specialist Australian trade magazine. He is wondering if anyone has ever seen or heard of Derek Purcell even looking at a Golf Club, or "stick" as he would have called it? Please if anyone can shed any light, or has any video or photographic evidence to the contrary, please let Colin know by emailing us here

The Popularity of B.net

Ernie Evans Photographer
It's time to introduce you to Ernie Evans, father of John who went beyond the call of duty to post us a magnificent collection of Balbriggan photographs from the 1950's. Ernie's mother came from Balbriggan and her name was Margaret Andrews. John doesn't know where she lived in Balbriggan but hopefully we will find out more from our surfers. We know she died in 1966 and is buried in a Chester cemetery. John was telling us that he doesn't remember what camera his father used but he remembers him using the light meter and he actually made his own enlarger using an old lens, so a talented man. If anyone can help us here, do you remember a Margaret Andrews or know any Andrews in Balbriggan, please email us here. Also, there is a mother and child in this photo that are unknown to us, let us know if you recognise them. Click on the thumbnail to see Ernie Evans, his wife and daughter.

Jimmy is a huge fan of B.net along with his brother Michael in London and other brother in Shannon. Anyway, this photograph was taken in Dundalk in the 1940's when Fr. Menton used to take the altar boys on a yearly day out like the Zoo, Guinness Brewery etc. Jimmy has supplied us with most of the names. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge. 18.12.08 Update, missing names supplied
