Met Eireann Web Site.
Here is a web site, or should we say, part of a web site that is just brilliant. Our Tony needs to know if it's going to rain in the next few hours or not when photographing houses. Well. Met Eireann (The Met Office) have a section that they call "Rainfall Radar" and when you click the animation it shows the past few hours of where the rain is falling and if it's heading towards Balbriggan. We use it all the time. Click on the thumbnail to see for yourself, ideal for Bar-B-Ques. 06.05.08

Another sad day for the Bracken Court Hotel. !!
Lorraine Gissane, banqueting manager of the hotel & a Morairty employee for nearly 12 years & with the Bracken Court Hotel since it opened has now left the hotel. She would have organized many a successful balbriggan (& surrounding area’s) family party in the hotel for years now. Weddings were Lorraine’s specialty & there are many happy bride & grooms who have paid thanks to Lorraine for her expertise, calm advice & hard work to successfully pull off their wedding reception. Many people who visit the hotel in any way regularly would remember Lorraine for being a truly lovely, friendly & warm lady, with a smile for everyone & genuinely popular with all ! Lorraine went out of her way to help others & put such time & effort into making sure her customers events & parties were a success. So Lorraine !! From all your friends still in the hotel & the friends now departed from the bracken court & all of your customers, we hope you know you will be sorely missed & your replacement knows there are big shoes to fill at the bracken court hotel. Our Tony (wedding Photographer)would like to express his gratude for all Lorrains help during 2007 and he and Lynnette wish her good health and best wishes. Good luck in your future adventures ! Keith & Laura become Mr & Mrs Sadleir.
Locals, Laura Clinton & Keith Sadleir tied the knot in Balscadden Church on the 19th of April. Keith's Mam & Dad, Bernie & Dave, better known as the proprietors of the shop on the square, were proud as punch to see their son marry such a beautiful girl. Laura's parents, Declan & Pauline also looked very proud and enjoyed the day thoroughly. Fr. Michael was the celebrant and brilliant as usual at putting everyone at their ease. After Balscadden it was off to Gormanston Castle for the photographs and then to Kettles Country Hotel in Swords. A great day was had by all and the photographers were Lynnette & Tony of PhotographyPlus.net. Click on the thumbnail to view photos. 29.04.08

Lighthouse Dome Replacement.
We asked a few weeks back if anyone had any idea of what it would cost to replace the dome. Keith Rankin has come back to us saying that it's difficult to say but his guess would be between €50,000. to €100,00. This sounds a lot to us to make a plastic dome and have it fitted to the Lighthouse. Does anyone know of a company that could make a dome?Your comments are welcome and we will place them on a dedicated web page, that's if we get a response. Click on the thumbnail to read Keith's original email to us.28.04.08

A Tourists' View of Balbriggan.
We at B.net try to stay away from "what's wrong with Balbriggan" and always try to see the positive side of our town. We understand that the town has the same problems as any other town but our little site is a hobby and we don't have the time to go down that road. Having said that, we received an email from an American tourist and it may interest some. 28.04.08

Lowther Lodge.
We received this email today, "Our Family used to vacation at Lowther Lodge for many years in the 1940's. I was about six years old when we first visited the area. The owner of Lowther was a Major Macartney-Filgate. I guess his wife had died some time before we started vacationing with him. The Major (he was a veteran of the Boer War) had two Daughters, Eleanor and Afra. The back of the house opened into a large orchard, surrounded by a high wall. The orchard was raided on a regular basis by soldiers from the local military camp. Both, my Brother and I have many fond memories of Lowther Lodge and Balbriggan. We had many fine photographs of Lowther, but they got lost over the years. Would any of your members know what happened to Eleanor & Afra McCartney-Filgate ?? I would also like to have some good photos of Lowther as it used to be 1920-1930. I am now living in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and can be reached at ajayh@shaw.ca We lived in Bray, Co Wiclow during our visits to Lowther Lodge. I look forward to hearing from somebody in the near future. Thanks............Bud Hall" Click on the thumbnail and see some recent and not so recent photos. 28.04.08

Bracken Court Hotel Damaged By Fire.
Fire and presumably water, have extensively damaged the towns hotel. It happened at about 11pm last night. Our Jack, saw the flames from Glebe North, went home, got the camera and captured some of the scenes. It's a huge blow to the town, as its a great place for a drink and very popular in the mornings for locals to chat over a cup of tea. We wish Luke Moriarty and the hotel staff well and hope the hotel we reopen asap. Update. We believe the damage is much worse than it looks from the outside. We hope to have an interview with Luke Moriarty shortly. Click on the thumbnail to see this mornings photos and the scenes from last night. 20.04.08

Margaret Carvin's 50th Birthday.
Well known Margaret Carvin, of "The Medical Hall", celebrated her 50th birthday in style in the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan. A huge crown turned out in the Martello Room to celebrate her birthday. Our Tony, who used worked with her son James, (Hatchie) was invited along to join in the celebration. Tony was telling us, that James, a very entertaining person to be with, a great sense of humour, made a very emotional speech about his mother, he thanked her for been the best mother anyone could wish for. Her husband, James, was also very proud to part of her life. What a night, our Tony was to be there for a few minutes and spent over 2 hours there. Click on the thumbnail to see photos of the night.

Google Earth Includes Balbriggan "Airport"
Up until recently, Google Earth, only covered up as far as Balrothery, but now, Balbriggan is included and you can zoom right down onto your house. It even gives the GPS location at the bottom left of your screen. When you zoom in on the beech, you see an icon that says "Balbriggan Airport" and up pops a Ryan Air plane near the Lighthouse. This photo first appeared on B.net and it was created by one of the team as a joke last year. We are not too concerned at the use of our photo, but we just want to clear up how the photo came about. Sargeant Vincent Retires from the force.
Well known and respected Sargeant, Vincent Donnelly, has retired from the force after 30 years service. A retirement party was held for him in the Bracken Court Hotel last week. Vincent was stationed in Balbriggan for the past 3 years and had become good friends with some of our team. Vincent, a Meath fan, asked us to photograph him with 1954 final Meath player, Kevin Lenehan, which we obliged. Vincent has the gift of the gab, and there were bets ongoing as to how long his speech would last, it lasted 28 minutes but it didn't seem that. as it was very entertaining. A lovely mannered, gentle man, who will be sadly missed in our town. Thanks Vincent. Click on thumbnail to view photos. 04.04.08

Our Lighthouse Dome--Latest News.
We received this very interesting email about 2 weeks ago. It's in relation to having the dome replaced. For those who don't know, the dome was removed in about 1960 as it was rotten with rust and it wasn't necessary when they changed over to electric. We wonder, has anyone any idea on the cost of this project, would it cost € 10.000 or € 100.000, we have absolutely no idea. Anyway, click on the thumbnail to read Keith Rankin's email. 04.04.08

We at Balbriggan.net have the first pictures and various newspapers like The Irish Independent, The Irish Times and even the London Times have requested these photos. We contacted the Department of the Environment and spoke to a Mr Charles Tuffy and he explained that this happened before on the west coast but never along the east. Missing Dog Found---Thanks to Balbriggan.net.
We think this is a fantastic story. It's a good news story that we are proud to be part of. To give some background to the story, one of the team saw a poster in a shop on Bridge street about the missing dog, as he was dialling the number to request that the photo be sent to B.net, the owner of the shop came out and said that the dog owner was broken hearted about the loss of her dog. Here is the email we received. "Hi Tony, words can not express my current emotions..I'm still in shock since receiving the phone call I thought would never happen yesterday morning. Thanks to your wonderful website, John of Gibbons Terrace phoned me yesterday morning with the great news that he had seen Paris and she was in fact hiding in one of his neighbours back gardens." more

The First Entry On Balbriggan.net.
It's not that easy to navigate back to the first few items on B.net. When we started out, we hadn't a clue(and some say, still don't) how web sites worked etc. Because of this error, it can be awkward to navigate back to the early entries. Now, we are a little bit better and we even have a web site other towns could only wish for. We now have a hit rate of about 300 per day(24 Hours). We have decided to bring you some of the highlights of the site over the past few years. The site started in September 2003 with news that Candons & Browns Boutique etc were about to be demolished. Holly & Val, how well behaved are your dogs?
One of the team has two dogs and the trick they do to impress visitors is captured here to show all. If a "Pringle" is placed in front of them, they will not eat it until they are told to. Our Tony once left them in this situation for several hours and on his return, the Pringle was still there and they hadn't moved a muscle. Impressive or what? Stevie Calow in 1930's Balbriggan.
Regular visitors to the site will know of Roger Turner, Roger came to Balbriggan through the 50's and 60's for summer holidays. This man, in the pictures, Stevie, is Roger's Grandfather and he came here in the 1930's after his father, William came to Balbriggan, and loved it. Stevie was born in the 1890's, worked as a chimney sweep in Sheffield, and died in the late 70's.Obviously a keen and very good photographer he developed these photos in his bathroom in Sheffield. The amazing thing is that we got these photos from Jack & Lily Canning but Roger also had copies. If it's getting complicated, don't worry, just enjoy the photos. 12.02.08

Nellie Richardson hits 95, that's her age, not her temperature.
This well know lady was 95 in December and to celebrate this, she threw a party for all her friends and family. It took place in "The Bracken Court Hotel" and apparently a great night was had by all. We wish Nellie continued good health and best wishes from the B.net team. Click to see her family and friends.04.02.08
