Regarding the picture from Dublin Street. The Eucharistic Congress took place in Ireland in June 1932. Cardinal Lauri, the papal Legate visitied Dublin for a week. It was such a huge occasion in Ireland. Over a million people from all over Ireland and many parts of the world decended on Dublin City and mainly Phoenix Park for a week of religious devotion and benediction. The flags on the buildings, not the bunting, look like they have the crest from the Eucharistic Congress on them and the other flags look like papal flags. This might suggest that it is some time after 1932. Maybe the picture displays a 10 year remembrance religious procession of the occasion from 1942? |

I'm looking at the picture of Dublin Street that you have just posted. I think Scanlans moved to it's present location in the mid 30's from where it is in the picture. The white house next door to Farrellys shop (church side), I'm sure the "Jemser" Sweetman lived there. I'm sure the picture is the 30's, Scanlans moved in the 30's, Masie Walsh worked in it, Eugine Scanlan moved across and started the new shop. The child in the pram outside the shop, as you couldn't bring prams into the shops then. I don't know who the man is or the Guard. |
