‘Spec’tactular urban woodland set to transform Balbriggan!

Cardy Rock Residents Association wins Specsavers’ urban community woodland competition

LOCAL community group, Cardy Rock Residents Association, is celebrating after winning the Specsavers urban community woodland competition. Caitriona Redmond from Cardy Rock Crescent, submitted the winning entry and was on site today (Monday 16 August) with judge and gardener Paul Doyle plus Specsavers store director Paul O’Boyle to cut the sod at the site.

The competition, created by the Specsavers stores in Dublin, offered one lucky community, in the Dublin area, the chance to win an urban community woodland up to the value of €10,000. The proposed location to the rear of Cardy Rock will now receive a ‘spec’tacular make-over by award-winning gardener Mr Doyle who has been commissioned by Specsavers to oversee the creation and design.

Mr Doyle, says: ‘I was overwhelmed by the number of entries to the competition and found it extremely difficult to choose a winner. Mrs Redmond’s entry was submitted at the Specsavers garden at Bloom, Eclipse 2010. It won due to the effort Mrs Redmond put into the entry for Cardy Rock Residents Association and the overall merit and value that the woodland will add to this community. The space is a blank canvas at present and I am looking forward to presenting my ideas to the association.’

Mrs Redmond stated: ‘We are trying to revive old style community spirit in the estate and I noticed the competition entry forms in my local Specsavers. We are delighted to have won this fantastic prize as it is something for young and old alike. This transformation will be a focal point for the community to enjoy and cultivate for many years to come and will mean a lot to Cardy Rock.’

Mr O’Boyle, Specsavers store director in Santry, reiterates: ‘As community opticians, we always endeavor to support local initiatives. Specsavers stores are owned and managed by Irish opticians and business partners and we’re committed to giving back to our communities. The stores’ communities are integral to the success of Specsavers and we’re thrilled to be supporting developments in the area. Cardy Rock Residents Association is a very worthy winner and I look forward to seeing how the woodland progresses.’
