Can I say how much this site means to me, I love it. I log in every morning at 7.30 before I go to work. I was disappointed that the Guest book wasn't updated for a while but lately is has come alive and I always judge a web site by how active the Guest Book is. A web site with no Guest Book, is a dead web site. Can I thank all of you who are involved with B.net as it means so much to us living abroad. Keep up the good work lads, I've never seen a site like it. Margaret.

Thanks to everybody for their congrats messages to Darren and myself, we thought our news travelled fast (and it was pretty damn fast to reach our friends back home withibn minutes). We wanted to tell you all in person but we did'nt make it home (3rd time unlucky) due to the ash cloud fiasco. We promise to come and see you guys (you know who you are) when we fly back from Greece on 17th June so stock up on food & beers as plenty to catch up on. Love to my mam Harriet & my sister and the family in Laytown and we look forward to seeing you all in two weeks....Darren & Edelle xx

comment: Hello

I was born in Balbriggan square on the 25th August 1929.

My father, Billy Lewis, was the only barber in the town and had his shop in the square next to the old cinema. My mother Connie Reed, worked in Whites papershop, also next to the old cinema.

My grandfather Jack Reed owned farmland at Tanners Water, not far from the Mill Lane.
He had 4 sons and 5 daughters.
When he died the funeral procession was stopped on the Dublin Road, on its way to Balrothery cemetry by the Black and Tans, who insisted that the coffin be opened so that a check could be made that no weapons were being carried.

My family eventually moved to Dublin, where my father continued his profession and set up 3 further barber shops.

It has been an absolute pleasure to discover this website and it has brought back many fond memories of my child hood in Balbriggan.

Many thanks
Ray Lewis

I'd also like to thank you for all the time & effort you put into creating and maintaining this website. My dad (Joe McEnaney from Clonard Street)monitors it I'd say daily and prints out the stories that would interest my mum (Rita Carton) to keep her up-to-date. Hi,

A long time ago(let's say 14 years ago!!) I spent a couple of months in Barlbriggan, it was my first real experience abroad and I wanted to thank you all for that.
Also... during my stay there I met someone named Ruairi Brennan (he used to live in hampton cove)... I was wondering if any of you have his actual contact. It would be great to catch up.
Thank you! fantastic site.

The idea was there, but they should have painted on the name "Smyth & Co, Hosiery Company 1780-1980" or something to that effect. I agree with the lady who said it looked like scaffolding with plastic over it. Most people had to be told what it was all about whereas with lettering on it would have made a huge difference.

comment: I have'nt visited the site in a few weeks and I am such a big fan but I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am not the only one who feels that there is a lack of irish spirit and tradition in some places of our lovely town. It was only this time last year that I was praising and enjoying such a wonderful parade and I must say the organisers do such a fantastic job every year. It really brings the locals and other community members together in the town for probably the only time in the year. We should be proud of this event and the support of this should not stop with only the parade goers and sponsors. It takes such a huge effort to achieve such a succesful result. But what I will say is that after the lovely parade the spirit continues in the local pubs who I was ashamed to see last year very very few had played any contribution in keeping the spirit going. I really think St.Patricks Day is a time that they benefit extremely well from punters and it would'nt take a lot to provide a little bit of Irish cheer to acompany the uisce beatha. I was very disappointed last year and it has not gone unnoticed to just me I am glad to see. It's like everything in life 'if you don't use it you lose it' and custom of a premises definitely falls into that category for me. Thanks to all the organisers of the parade and to the premises which have already played a great part including the hotel which looks lovely and the Bridal shop. I saw a few white baloons outside the millrace tonight and could be tempted to pop my head in there tomorrow, which may I mention is a wonderful new establishment in the town and should they continue with their efforts shall remain so for a long time we hope. It would be great if Moriarty could put a few flags on his empty flag poles up outside supervalu seeing as it is on the parade route. Slainte to you all

comment: Hi Tony,

This A reply to slainte aine's comment. I think she is absolutely right and the pubs and other businesses should put in the time and effort of decorating the premises.
I have noticed in the last few years that in some of the pubs there isn't even a banner nor a shamrock. I think we should keep our Irish tradition going. The empire state building is green for saint patricks day as is the sydney opera house and the London eye. The parade in Balbriggan is a great success and thanks to all who participate also thanks to the organisers. Alot of the locals who are out and about on St.Patricks day usually go on to have a few drinks in the local pubs and its a discrace that these pubs have no decorations up for the occasion but are quick to take their custom. These pubs know who they are and they should be ashamed of themselves but on the other hand some premises have really pushes the boat out with the irish festivals, Fair play to them!

Hope the pubs do better this year and great thanks to Tony for taking all of the beautiful pictures of Balbriggan.

Kay

Alot of negative comments about our lovely town I noticed. I would just like to say how impressed I was when I walked down the square at the wonderful shop window display for St Patrick's day it would make you proud to be Irish, lets hope all the other business premises in the town will do likewise. Well done to all who take part in keeping the St Patrick's day tradition alive, a nicely decorated pub creates a lovely athmosphere to have a nice pint with family and friends and a bet at Cheltenham sounds like a great day out. Great photos of harbour now maybe its time to get middle of the town revamped alot of shabby buildings after the beautiful hotel.Town looking well from the church to the Square keep up the good work Tony you are a gem

Tony you're a real pro and as I told you that day we witnessed a historic day!
Here's hoping it won't end there and some resources and manpower can be pumped into Seapoint lane(the potholes are a joke)and the back beach area.
Maybe "Home" could clean up it's act and get painted and remove the bin loads of empty bottles that are just left sitting in full sight. What a pity the very jewel of the town ie the harbour and two beaches are so neglected.Regards....... Roisin Mollahan

comment: Hi Tony,

I'm gonna add my twopence worth to Carla's comments and the dog poo stink. But before I do I just want to thank you again for your great work especially the interviews and slide shows you did with my dad Christy.

Anyway, to Carla, what would life be like in Balbriggan or any other town if everything was hunky dory all the time? Life would be boring if we were all nice all the time wouldn't it? Some people can see no fault whatsoever in Balbriggan, mad as that may sound, but that's their opinion. Most people will look through rose tinted glasses at some time in their life. But you are right 100% in what you said, because it is your opinion, and if one has an opinion about anything at all it has to be 100% in their mind. I can't criticize you for having an opinion and it did not upset me one jot. I was born in Balbriggan 53 years ago and still live there now and to be honest, although I love Balbriggan it is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. As for being a "true local" (not your comment I know), what is that all about? As far as I'm concerned if you live in a town you are a local. What's the "true" bit? I'm at least a 4th generation Balbriggan man and I don't see myself any different to say someone who has moved to the town, two years ago. We both chose to live in Balbriggan and that makes us local. So all of the "true local" rubbish should be sent to the deleted items bin. Enough said on that I think.

Now for the dog poo debate. There are a huge number of dog owners (I'm not one) in the town and I have seen owners pick up after their dogs have done their business and owners walk away and leave it behind. In fact I've seen owners take their dogs onto the cricket pitch behind the church so that they can empty their bowels on the pitch. I can name some of these people and will do to the Gardai and Fingal Co Co the next time I witness it. So beware you dog poo litterers. I'm sure I speak for the majority of people (especially non dog oweners) when I say, "CLEAN UP YOU DOGS MESS" it's not fair on the rest of us.

Finally, it seems most of the dogs in Balbriggan are scared of heights. What are you on about I hear you say? Well if you walk across the the railway viaduct ( or prom as it's know to "true locals" haha) you will see that all the dog poo is in liquid form, they obviously (I'm sorry Tony I know you said keep it clean) shit themselves while walking at such a height. Dam hard to clean that up with a doggie bag, so maybe the dogs should be blind folded or carried or wear a nappy going across. Anyway, that's my twopence worth, more like € 50's worth really.

Keep up the great work Tony & co. and don't forget to get a picture of the lighthouse when it's painted. After all, as one of your earlier contributors to the guest book said, "true locals" started a "paint our lighthouse" campaign, and I'm sure they'll appreciate a glorious full colour 12 trillion megapixel photo on your site to show the result of their tireless work in finally achieving what they set out to achieve. My tongue is firmly stuck to my cheek as you can imagine.

All the best

Tommy Geraghty

comment: Hi all,
As a huge dog lover and the owner of two dogs can I make a suggestion with regard dog poo. I bought 100 nappy sacks ( small scented bags) in Tesco for 1.00 euro and I always bring these with me and if the dogs leave a package, I use the scented nappy bag to pick it up and bring to the nearest bin or dog pooper station in the town. It's as easy as that so I can't understand why all dog walkers don't do likewise. This seems to be the best option as I see in the latest publication of "The Fingal News" that the council can no longer provide free pooper scoopers but will provide an empty bin for dog walkers. I have just noticed that their motto is "Pause & Think-Clean it up" maybe they should have "Paws & Think". So, a final plea to all dog walkers, please bring a small disposal bag or nappy bag and clean up after your dog.

I myself walk every evening and I am disgusted at the amount of dog owners I see allowing their dog to relieve themselves and who just keep walking without cleaning up after their dog.
I think it is disgusting and would hate to see the condition of these peoples houses if they are happy to allow their dogs to foul and not clear up after them.
I would also suggest that the litter warden / fingal co co get their finger out and firstly fill the pooper scooper thing they have near the church and next erect a few more around the town in order to give people NO excuse not to clean up after their pet..

comment: Dear Balbriggan.net
I have just finished reading the letter about dog poo I could'nt agree with your reader more. The pavement outside my home in Pinewood Green is a regular path for dog owners taking their dogs up to the fields. I have never once seen any dog owner clean up after their dog. I regularly have to go and clean outside my home or dog poo would be trampled all over my home. Also parents must be sick of cleaning their kids shoes as it is also the route to the local shop and St. Teresa's school. From what I have seen there are very few responsible dog owners.
Yours sincerely Bernie

comment: Just a quick line regarding some responses about Carla & her feelings towards our town. She is allowed to have her own views about Balbriggan good or bad & by reacting negatively towards her you are only proving her views towards us are correct. Balbriggan is not the small town we grew up in & has changed a lot. It has its good days & bad days & does not always smell of roses. I love this town but there are some places that make me feel like I am a stranger & shouldnt be there, & I am not just talking about the new areas. This site is supposed to promote the town & if people start using the site to pick on people just because of their views Carla may be right & I hope she isn't.

Richies comrades made an unforgettable contribution and did our nation and families proud. Their dedication shone through the rain and they beared their uniform with credit and pride.

comment: Could I ask a question of Mr Joe Flanaghan?

Can he define what a 'TRUE LOCAL' is in relation to status in Balbriggan? What does one have to do to gain it? How does one qualify for it? How long do you have to live there to be conferred with the title of a 'TRUE LOCAL'? How many generations of your family living in Balbriggan does one need to gain this badge of honour? If you marry into one of the 'Local Families' does that give you automatic membership of this exclusive club? Better still, if one of your children marries into one of the 'Local Families' does the honour automatically pass to all of your family . . . ?

Does the title give you any benefits? YES

You are entitled to address any male in the town you know, by the expression 'our lad'

If you have nine consecutive generations from the town - you are allowed to shorten the above - by addressing everyone as 'our'

Male members of your family are given an extra 'name' to help distinguish them from 'NOT-TRUE-LOCALS'

(examples are: HOBBLES; WAG; WAB; WAM; BANTY; GLICK; SHERIFF; CHEYANE; SKI; SNIGGY; NAWZI; BEAR; MIDDLERS; DUCKSIE; DIT; DOT; NUDIE; BOOTS; CHICO; WAW-WAW; WUDGIE; BUDGIE; BULLY; STAFF; LOCKO; COLLEGE; CLANGER; BELLIES; BRUNO; BANSH; DAGO; ROASTER; GUNCHIE; NAIL; FLASH; RUA; ROOKIE; RUGGA; BLACKIE; BUNBH; EMPTY; DUCK; BAMMY; RIP VAN; BET; BIG BIRD; RANGER; SHOVELS; THUMPER; BOGGA; SKINNY; SKETCHER; GRANVILLE; STUFFER; BOSS; BRECKSIE; FROSTY) the list is endless . . .

which is why we know that Joe Flanaghan is not a 'TRUE LOCAL' - if he was he would be called Joe 'REX' Flanaghan . . .

You:

Can you park your car on the footpath on the main street and not get a ticket?

Can you reverse your car onto the main street and not get penalized for it?

Can Make a 'U' turn especially at the junction of Station Street and Drogheda Street - dispensations especially for 'TRUE LOCALS'?

Can park your car in one of the estates near the train station and not worry about the consequences for the inhabitants of that estate - special permits granted to 'TRUE LOCALS' only?

Can cycle on the footpaths and expect pedestrians (especially infirm and older ones) to get out of the way?

Can overfill your Green Bin and not worry about the consequences?

Can work and still draw the dole?

Can walk your dog/s down by the beach and not have a muzzle on it? Or worse still - not have it on a lead?

Can Ignore the ridiculous sign (down near the beach) which says 'Owners of Dogs who soil or mess in public and who do not clean up after them' will be fined â ¬1,500 - does anyone know if such a fine has ever been imposed or collected?

Can dump rubbish in black bags down at the car-park beside Balbriggan Town FC's club-house?

Can break the speed limit on the Skerries Road and get away with it?

Can enter RC Church car park through the 'NO ENTRY' signs (particularly) every Sunday?

Are allowed to leave your mobile phone on in the Church during Mass, Funerals, Weddings and Christenings?

Can Moan non-stop about the present crisis and all the past ones - and yet vote for FIANNA FAIL in every General Election?

I am sure that some of the owners of the oft-mentioned wrecks in Balbriggan Harbour are possibly 'TRUE LOCALS' - what do we do then?

I could go on but . . .

I used to serve them drink! We used to have a great laugh. He was a lovely fella, and even when I lived in the UK, when I would meet him on visits home, whenever that may be, he always had a warm greeting with his champion smile. Great guy. Nancy, please receive my condolences for yourself and Kayleigh. Rest in peace old son.

comment: What a fantastic website! I have just seen a photo in your archive news of my father Sean Reilly's shop in Drogheda Street. It was 18 Drogheda Street, next door to Charlie Corr's. I was born in the room above the shop in 1957. My mother Betty ran the shop. She was a Cross on her father's side, a Corcoran on her mother's. Sadly she passed away last year. My father died six years ago. I remember the shop well, I used to sit on the step and watch the world go by. Balbriggan was such a small town then, we knew everyone. Today 18 Drogheda Street is the Spar supermarket. I also saw a picture of my great-uncle Coffe Corcoran on your site, he fished on the Avoca. I remember as a child running down to the harbour and he would tie plaice to a string for me to bring home for our tea. I am trying to find out more about the Corcoran side of the family, I believe they go back a long way in the history of Balbriggan. Thankyou for such a tremendous website.
Best wishes,
Miriam O'Reilly (my father added the O' to our name when we came to England in 1964.

I met this family once back in 2006, they were living in Balbriggan, in one of the first houses when you enter in Castlelands. The Father in the house was Mr. Stephen Ward and his wife's name was Tracy. They have 3 children, Rebecca, Stephen and Stacy, thats what I remember.
Does anybody know them? I would love to get an e mail adress, or a regular adress. I lost my contact with them and I just wanted to know how they are doing.
Thanx!!!!

comment: It was with deepest regret that I learned of the passing of the late and great Jack Benton while I was out of the country.
A man that I got to know whan I spent my year as Chamber President some years ago.
Jack was a man, a proud Balbriggan man, that spoke as well of his town as he did his family.
He spoke about the change that was happening to his town and how he recognised the fact that the history, people and places should not be forgotten. He always had a word and a smile for me and mine and I thank him so dearly for that.
I will miss this happy, gentle and kind man for all the nicest of reasons.
As the Beatles once sang;
"There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better,
Some have gone but some remain....
Jack Benton will always remain......
God's peace be with you.
Kind Regards,
John Farrell and Family

comment: I would like to pass on behalf of my parents Billy and Nellie Hamilton of Derham Park and myself and my family to Mrs Benton and Marian, Pauline & Fergus. My dad and Jack were good friends and often talked on the `banks' about the old days. A subject he was a real expert in. He will be sadly missed as will his superb photography. The photographs down through the years will serve be a legacy to him and his love for the town of Balbriggan.

May he rest in peace

My thoughts are with Mrs Benton, Marion, Pauline and Fergus. I think that's the first time I called Mr Benton, Jack. When I was younger I used to more or less live in 71 Hampton street playing with Fergus and Mrs Benton giving me dinners plus lovely plum pudding's. I have great memories of the Bentons and Hamptom street. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Take Care.. Ciaran Devaney

Generous in so many ways, generous with his time, humour, advice (whether you wanted it or not - but you can be sure, you benefited by it)and one of the world's Gentlemen. I have one momento of Jack, a wide angled lense that he gave me when his Fuji S7000 clicked for the last time, now a treasured possession. Farewell friend.

comment: Hi, Tony. Although I know many of the faces , I canâ t remember all the names. Number 1 is Rita Carton. Number 9 is Kathleen Byrne. One is Patricia Hurley and Number 14 is Kay Kelly. Hope all is well. I check in on the web everyday and have my visual walk along the beach. Love all the updated photos. It shows how well the town looks with everyoneâ s hard work. I have just retired from the university and am enjoying my unscheduled time. Hope to visit next year. Delighted to see how well Shiela Reynolds and Mrs. Richardson look in photos. Recent photoâ s bring back a lot of memories. McCanns on the corner and Corcorans on the Hill where we got our ice cream and buckets and spades and the biscuits in the glass topped boxes, not to mention the ice cream floats sitting by the glass covered tables. Tell Jimmy HamiltonI found the e-mail he sent with photos when I was clearing off my files at work. Old boy scouts photos with my brother Joseph in them. I enjoyed listening to Mr. Geraghty who lived across the street from me and I love to watch the video from the roof of the hotel and also from the roof of Spicers. It just like I am really there. All the photos and information would make a wonderful museum of Balbriggan for generations to come. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work. It certainly means a lot to those of us who live so far away in America, Australia and every other part of the world. Best regards, Caith McEnaney/Fairley.

Hi, I've just recently comeback from a regular trip to see our remaining relatives in Balscadden. Whilst there we saw the work in progress at the Church and congratulations to all the many hardworking people in the village who worked tirelessly to raise the funds, prepare the church and clean up the graveyard and help with the refurbishment. It looks really great and quite frankly when I left, I didn't think that it could be finished on time. I've looked at the array of photographs, clearly a lot of people who did so much work in the background are too modest to appear on "camera" So well done to all those folks as well,

On a slightly more sombre note relating to Balbriggan. We mostly stay in your lovely Bracken Court hotel and enjoy your town very much. This time however, we were particularly disappointed at the state and stench of your small fishing harbour. It is the worst condition that we have ever seen it, which is such a shame, since it such a quaint and interesting part of your town, not to mention a working contribution to your local economy. Please don't let it digress any further. Get it cleaned up and clear away all the unused derelict boats. It could still be such an attraction, especially with the seals now visiting.

We used to call it " the brick factory " but I have no idea if that was it's original use . Anyway I was wondering does anyone know the history of this building ? I Haven't been up at it in 20 odd years so I don't know what sort of disrepair it is in and it's hard to tell from the road but it would be a pity if it was knocked down .

Can't wait to see you all when I come over from Antigua in August. Big hello to my pal Anna Hussey and her twin boys (James & David) who made their confirmation this week. I was raging I missed the Paddy's Day parade this year as I heard there was great crack to be had that day. This is my 14th year away from Balbriggan and still miss home from time to time and for those pals who keep saying I have a caribbean accent 'YEAH MAN' !! Don't worry, I still have me balbriggan twang - that will never go !! Howia to me old school pal Flo Simpson and looking forward to seeing you missus when you pay me a visit in July - keep up the good work on the website - it keeps people all across the world in contact with those loved ones back home. Lots of love from Edel & Darren Weaver in Antigua

How sad to hear about the passing on of John 'D' a lot of us guys from Glasgow were regulars of his in the 1970's. Best bar we ever visited and his brouges were world famious. Clickty clack as John walks over the tiled floor of the lounge. Come on lads he would say, "why not go out for a walk in the sunshine" instead of staying in here playing darts and drinking Guinness all day.
Nedless to say we did not take his advice.
Happy memorys of a truly great man.
