Balbriggan Youth Service Film Project
Ask any of the older members of the Balbriggan community about the history of the town
and you are almost certain to hear at least one mention of the tale of ‘The Sailor’s Grave’.
‘The Sailor’s Grave’ is a legendary local ghost story about a group of seafarers who met
their fate on the rocks along the Balbriggan coastline in the late 1800s. It will delight
those who hold the story dear that it is being carried on by Balbriggan’s younger
generation. The site of the shipwreck - not far from Cardyrock - has been a hive of
activity this past few weeks as a group of budding young filmmakers from Balbriggan
have been shooting a modern day film that deals with the tale, simply titled ‘The
Sailor’s Grave’.
The 2010 take on the story wonderfully reflects
the new Balbriggan but stays true to the old.
As part of The Balbriggan Youth Service’s
Summer Programme, these talented young
people aged between 13 and 16 produced
this film from scratch – from the acting to the
shooting right down to the lighting and makeup.
The project was facilitated by Irish film writer
Claire Dix and The Balbriggan Youth Service
whose Summer Programme aims to engage young people from all over Balbriggan in exploring
their talents and potential. The movie is chalked down for a cinema showing this coming autumn.
