FILM CLUB AT BALBRIGGAN LIBRARY
How does the Film Club work?
A film is shown in the Library every second Saturday afternoon
at 1.30pm. There is a short introduction first, giving the background,
and everyone will be invited to discuss the film afterwards.
What Kind of Film does the Club
Show?
The plan at present is to track the history of film, so we’ve
been showing a film from each decade, starting in the 1910s. We’ll
work up to the present day and then look at all-time classics.
This is a rare opportunity to watch the early films and find out
their contemporary significance. It’s also an opportunity
to air and share your love of film.
Why the 15-18 Age Group?
The library runs events for children and adults, but rarely, to
date, for this specific age-group, though it is a distinct one
– between teens and freedom! This is an invitation to you
to come and enjoy the library’s facilities, and to relax
with people of your own age and interests. The film club is intended
to be a beginning. If there are any other activities, clubs etc
you’d like to see, we’d be glad to hear from you.
The Club facilitator is Máighréad
Medbh, who is available in Balbriggan Library and can be contacted
at: 8704401.

15-18 FILM CLUB AT BALBRIGGAN LIBRARY
The Balbriggan Library Film Club for 15
to 18 year-olds continues with its showing of film classics on
Saturday 9th February at 1.30pm. The film on show will be Dog
Day Afternoon (1975). Directed by Sidney Lumet and written by
Frank Pierson, it stars Al Pacino and is based on a real bank
robbery that took place on August 22nd 1972.
The film epitomizes the disillusioned and anti-establishment social
climate of the seventies. John Wojtowicz, the real-life ‘bank-robber’
on whom the film is based, praised Al Pacino’s depiction
of him, and the film’s depiction of his relationships.
Dog Day Afternoon won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay
and was nominated for five other awards. It was nominated for
seven Golden Globe awards, won an NBR award (National Board of
Review of Motion Pictures) for Best Supporting Actor, and a Writers’
Guild award for Best Drama Written Directly for the Screen. In
2006, Premiere magazine cited Pacino's performance as the 4th
greatest ever.
All 15-18 year-olds welcome. Enquiries to Máighréad
