Road closures for resurfacing work

Resurfacing of Balbriggan Main Street – Update – 13th August 2010

Following representations from the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and Balbriggan Town Council, and a meeting held with Fingal County Council last Friday, the following has been agreed in relation to the resurfacing works.

  • Work has commenced on the installation of gullies and other works (including patching of parts of the existing surface) in preparation for the resurfacing and these works will continue for the remainder of this week and into next week. There will be very little if any traffic disruption during this work.
  • Work on the resurfacing of the carriageway will commence on Thursday 19th August and will be carried out in 5 separate phases over 5 days as detailed below.

Section 1 – Thursday 19th August - from south of Chapel Street to north of Clonard Street

Section 2 – Friday 20th August – from north of Market Green to the Combined Clubs

Section 3 – Saturday 21st August – Market Green junction (am) and from north of Convent Lane to south of Chapel Street (pm)

Section 4 Monday 23rd August – The Square/Hampton Street junction and from the Square to the Combined Clubs

Section 5 Tuesday 24th August – The High Street/Hampton Street junction and from North of Clonard Street to the Square

* Remaining junction works and other outstanding works will be carried out on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 25th, 26th and 27th, and will only involve some minor traffic disruption.

  • Each phase will last from 7am daily until such time as the section of road is complete
  • The work each day on Sections 1-5 above will involve

(i) the planing of the existing road surface,
(ii) the laying of the new road surface,
(iii) the repainting of lining on the new road surface.

  • Each section of road in question will be closed to vehicular traffic for most of the day, except for emergency vehicles. Diversion routes will be clearly indicated.
  • Pedestrian access through the works, including access to business premises, will be maintained at all times. Urgent deliveries to businesses will be facilitated. However, the Council would ask all businesses to arrange deliveries to be scheduled outside the periods of the road closure.
  • Electronic signage will be in place at either end of the town directing HGVs onto the Inner Relief Road and advising other motorists to expect delays through the town. The signage will also clearly indicate that it is ‘Business As Usual’ in the town.
  • There will be some parking restrictions at various times during the works and the Traffic Wardens have been made aware of the situation and will cooperate with residents, the business community and their customers as far as possible.
  • The above schedule will be adhered to insofar as possible but is weather permitting.
  • The continued support of the business community in Balbriggan is very earnestly and sincerely appreciated by the Transportation Department in Fingal County Council. The resurfacing of the carriageway and the relining of the street will greatly enhance the main thoroughfare through the town and will effectively complete the scheme. No further road closures or significant traffic disruption are anticipated in the town for the foreseeable future.
