Missing Dog Found---Thanks to Balbriggan.net.
We think this is a fantastic story. It's a good news story that we are proud to be part of. To give some background to the story, one of the team saw a poster in a shop on Bridge street about the missing dog, as he was dialling the number to request that the photo be sent to B.net, the owner of the shop came out and said that the dog owner was broken hearted about the loss of her dog. Here is the email we received. "Hi Tony, words can not express my current emotions..I'm still in shock since receiving the phone call I thought would never happen yesterday morning. Thanks to your wonderful website, John of Gibbons Terrace phoned me yesterday morning with the great news that he had seen Paris and she was in fact hiding in one of his neighbours back gardens." more

The First Entry On Balbriggan.net.
It's not that easy to navigate back to the first few items on B.net. When we started out, we hadn't a clue(and some say, still don't) how web sites worked etc. Because of this error, it can be awkward to navigate back to the early entries. Now, we are a little bit better and we even have a web site other towns could only wish for. We now have a hit rate of about 300 per day(24 Hours). We have decided to bring you some of the highlights of the site over the past few years. The site started in September 2003 with news that Candons & Browns Boutique etc were about to be demolished. Click on the thumbnail to see the first news item. 07.03.08

I gratefully appreciate any help you and your readers can give me in finding her. Kind regards Liz(087-xxxxxx)." If anyone has seen her, please contact us by email or Liz on her mobile. Holly & Val, how well behaved are your dogs?
One of the team has two dogs and the trick they do to impress visitors is captured here to show all. If a "Pringle" is placed in front of them, they will not eat it until they are told to. Our Tony once left them in this situation for several hours and on his return, the Pringle was still there and they hadn't moved a muscle. Impressive or what? Stevie Calow in 1930's Balbriggan.
Regular visitors to the site will know of Roger Turner, Roger came to Balbriggan through the 50's and 60's for summer holidays. This man, in the pictures, Stevie, is Roger's Grandfather and he came here in the 1930's after his father, William came to Balbriggan, and loved it. Stevie was born in the 1890's, worked as a chimney sweep in Sheffield, and died in the late 70's.Obviously a keen and very good photographer he developed these photos in his bathroom in Sheffield. The amazing thing is that we got these photos from Jack & Lily Canning but Roger also had copies. If it's getting complicated, don't worry, just enjoy the photos. 12.02.08

Martin Fanning 60th Bash in the Milestone.
When it comes to 60th birthday parties, they don't come much bigger than this one. There must have been 200 guests there on the night. Actually, the local Garda station reported the lowest level of crime in the town for years, they were all at the party. Only joking, but it did look like half of Balbriggan were there to show their affection for Martin "Bootsie" Fanning. A fantastic night was had with beautiful food, great entertainment by Linda & Denise and a "from the heart" speech from Martin. We at B.net sincerely wish Martin many more happy years together with his beautiful wife Kathleen, and, as most locals know, there would be no balbriggan web site without MartinFanning. We love you Martin.. The Team.Click to see photos by our Tony. 21.01.08

Rolestown Panto---Robinson Crusoe.
Our Tony used to appear in this Panto for years and years and he went along to their dress rehersal and was very impressed with what he saw. This is a professionally produced show and is on this weekend and next weekend. It's only 30 minutes from Balbriggan on the road from Swords to Ashbourne and no parking problems. How to get there. We will have more details here shortly. Click the thumbnail to see pictures of this superb production. 16.01.08

Let it snow, let it snow.
A light dusting of snow fell during the week on Balbriggan and most of Ireland. Team member Joe Curtis in Naul along with Paul Connell in Oldtown and Liam Prout in Balscadden have sent us in a few pictures for the site. It's so unusual to get snow here that it's always worth showing how the surrounding area looks like covered with the white stuff. Unfortunately we have no photos of a snow covered Balbriggan as it didn't stick long enough to photograph. Thanks lads for the great photos, click on the thumbnail to view. 06.01.08

John D's Pub in the 1940's.
Every so often, a real classic photo turns up and today's photo is, what we call, a classic. It shows John D's pub as it was in the 40's. It was called "Patton's " then, and this photo, shows Ms Madden in the doorway. We went along today and took a photo from a similar angle. Click to enlarge and enjoy. Photo courtesy of "Benton/Curtis Collection".

One of yesterdays photos enhanced.
We knew when we were taking the photos yesterday, that, with a bit of work, we could make a classic from at least one of them. So, last night, with time on our hands, snowing outside, we started to work on one of them and came up with this. Comments and suggestions welcome to info@balbriggan.net . Click to enlarge.

A Cold Blustery Day in Balbriggan.
A day of every season in Balbriggan today, bright sunshine one minute, dark and very cold the next, even snow at times. We can see the sea from where we are and we noticed the white horses and rough seas so we got the camera to take a few shots. Bitter cold easterly winds made it difficult to get good pictures and the fact that the tide was out didn't help for dramatic shots. We got a few, click on the thumbnail to view. 03.01.08

Different Views of Christmas Swim from Boat.

Mrs Murtagh of Hampton Street.
This woman had a shop on Hampton Street, between Church Street and Hampton Place, and for years the display in the window never changed, the cornflakes box was so faded it was hard to make out if you could eat the contents or wash your clothes with it. She had a large dog, possibly a Dalmatian, which used to keep her company in the shop and on the long walks. Some years back she went into a nursing home in Limerick where she died a few years later. One of the builders renovating the shop premises found some negatives and gave them to us for the site. Unfortunately, they had very little reference to the town but we want to get the negatives to her relatives. We did make contact some years back but we have mislaid their address. So, if anybody knows her relations, please put them in contact with us. Click to see some photos.02.01.08

Balbriggan's Famous Shopfront.
Charlie Corr, of Corr's Hardware, was telling one of the team lately of the time his shopfront was used by John Hinde postcards. The card was on sale at Dublin Airport and at various shops throughout Europe. Charlie contacted the company to see if he was entitled to payment for the use of his shopfront but he was told no, but, as a goodwill gesture, they promised to send him a few hundred cards which they did. It's a great photograph which was well spotted by photographer T. Kelly. Click to enlarge.

Neddie Crosbie.
Mick Blount answered a Guest Book enquiry recently about a man on a bike,
the old boy with bike blowing whistle around Craoibhin/Derham was Neddie crosbie, his mantra was "up John Bull" then the whistle blew. You can imagine the reply he regularly got. Our friends Benton/Curtis have come up trumps again with a great photo of this town character. Originally Neddie lived on Dublin street but then he moved to Derham Park. Thanks for the info Mick, click on thumbnail to see Neddie. 02.01.08

O'Dwyers Christmas Morning Swim.
We wondered why there was such a small crown at the 11am swim, the reason is that the main swim was at 12 midday. Luckily, our Brian Howley was there for B.net as was Stephen Lawless who also very kindly sent us some photos for the site. Click to enjoy about 20 photos.

Christmas Morning Swim.
A smaller than normal crowd this year for whatever reason, beautiful weather but very cold. About 11 swimmers, most wearing festive hats and santie beards, made the short dash to the water and swam for a few minutes before returning to terrafirma. Well done guys, see you all this day next year. Photos by Arthur & Tony. Click on thumbnail to view photos.

Christmas Morning Town Photographs.
This is specially for those abroad who cant be in Balbriggan this Christmas so this may help to easy the pain. Martello Tower photo by Bob McManus.
Bob, originally from Finglas, now lives in Ely, Cambridge, visited Balbriggan in May to meet up with our Tony after they made contact on a photography forum. Bob & Sally, Tony & Yvonne walked the coastline on a beautiful day and some lovely photographs were shot. We are so lucky in Balbriggan to have several focal points like the Martello Tower, The Viaduct, The Harbour, The Lighthouse, other towns in north county Dublin have nothing. Anyway, click on the thumbnail to see Balbriggan in the summer. Bob & Sally are already looking forward to returning to Balbriggan in early 2008. 23.12.07

1911 Census of Ireland.

Forge Stone on Clonard Street.
We all walk by, or even, walk on this piece of Balbriggan history. Recently Jack Benton took our Tony around the town to point out some points of interest to him and it was on their travels when they came to the forge stone. The Forge is long gone but the stone remains. Basically, wood was placed in the groves of the stone and hot metal bands were placed around the outer edge and as the metal cooled it pulled the wood tightly together to make a wheel. If anyone has more information on this, let us know and we will post it. Click on the thumbnail to see our Jack at the stone. 13.12.07

Foróige are currently trying to establish a youth club for young people aged 12 and over in the Balbriggan area. This can not be achieved unless we have the support and help of adults who would be willing to get involved and help get this much needed club up and running. If you can spare an hour once a week and would like to work in partnership with young people, then please contact Bryan Gavin, Foróige Regional Youth Officer @ 086 8519639 or email bryan.gavin@foroige.ie . Without your help this worthwhile project will not get off the ground.

Balbriggan Signal Box- End of an Era.
The towns signal box was built in 1890 and for over a hundred years it stood adjacent to the train station. In 1994 it was decommissioned and there to record its last working day on video was Jack Benton. This fascinating video is almost 25 minutes long and in it you see signal man John Collier operating the levers for the last time. John talks to our Jack about his career in the GNR and the signal boxes he worked in over the years. We at Balbriggan.net have converted the video to DVD and it is available from McGoverns Gift Shop and House of Gifts, both on Dublin Street. Only a limited number will be available so place you order there as soon as possible. 14.11.07
