The Junkers JU-88 G-6c Nachtjagdgeschwader(Night Fighter) at Gormanston May 1945
Hers is the sequence of events.
The crew wanted to defect to Prague but bad weather over Czechoslovakia prevented this. So pilot Herbert Gieslke decided to make for Ireland. He headed west from Aalborg in Denmark, over the North Sea and crossed the English coast near Middlesboro. He almost landed in Liverpool before realising his mistake and let off several rounds of ammunition as a final act of defiance.
The British papers speculated that Hitler and other high ranking officials were on board. The RAF were keen to acquire the plane to examine its highly sophisticated equipment with it's "Stag's Antlers" antennae which are clearly visible in the top photo. The Black cross of the Luftwaffe was painted out and the RAF roundels put in their place. The plane was then flown to Farnborough.
