Balbriggan Public Realm Plan to be launched
Fingal County Council in partnership with Balbriggan Town Council, the Heritage Council and Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce has prepared a Public Realm Plan for Balbriggan.
The Balbriggan Public Realm Plan “The Heart of Balbriggan” will be launched by Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly T.D. on Monday 3rd October 2011 at 6.30 p.m. in Balbriggan Town Hall, Georges Square and the local community are invited to attend.
The “The Heart of Balbriggan” was produced by LOCI, consultants on behalf of Fingal County Council. Public Participation was a key part of the process and the local community was invited to participate throughout the making of the plan.
The Public Realm Plan will act as a guide for future public space projects and proposals for Balbriggan. It will also be a resource for local groups and organisations to support their own plans and projects.
Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Councillor Grainne Maguire said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Balbriggan and will enhance the work already being done in the community which will ensure that Balbriggan is a fantastic place to live, work and play in for many years to come”.
Although significant public realm improvements have been undertaken by the Council in the recent past, including high quality resurfacing of footpaths, public lighting, way-finding and street furniture, the publication of the plan indicates a recognition on the part of the Council and the plan’s sponsors that further work is needed to enhance the pedestrian and cyclist experience.
The Heritage Council introduced the concept of Public Realm Plans (PRPs) in 2006 through the work of its all-island initiative — the Irish Walled Towns Network (IWTN). The Heritage Council is sponsoring the development of Public Realm Plans in historic towns throughout Ireland.
